Maturing Hull form designs?
« on: February 13, 2013, 02:03:18 PM »
I could be wrong having not seen the recent E7 and Everest 1 but think that there isn't much difference in performance of the recent hull shapes.  Some of the newer developements appear to be more focussed on reducing aero and Hydrodynamic drag.

Examples are rounded gunnels, smaller diameter masts, partial foredecks, smaller cord and area foils and probably more.

This follows the same path of developement that the 18 footers followed in the 1990's and is documented in Frank Bethwaits 'Higher performance Sailing'.

As an observation this is good for the class because the bigger performance benifits have been taken advantage of which means that the pace on improvement is slowing and the older 05 rules boats will not fall behind as quickly as they may have done 5 years ago.

More competitive boats means bigger race attendances and better racing.

And at times the E5 is quicker I reckon - we just weren't good enough to turn corners in it (at least not in the conventional way!) . E6 sacrifices a bit of top end speed for some more cuddliness in manoeuvres. It'll be really interesting to see how the 2 new designs compare.

I quite often cuddle Jill in manoevers - just before sending her round the forestay!

Either way Andy, I hope you cuddle her afterwards too.

Possibly the definition of romance in a cherub sailing household...

It's up there with  "as it's Valentine's Day I might not do any boat work tonight"

Quote from 1981:

"Hull design plays a small part in Cherub racing today. Most boats are Murray,
Ferguson, Pearson or Bethwaite, or something very similar, and all perform fairly
equally. Your crew work has to be spot on. So many races are lost by bad crew work.
You must be able to tack, gybe, get spinnakers up and down or do any other
manoeuvre easily and smoothly".
