Hi
Is there going to be a sticky weekend in the near future.
Thanks Andy
-
Finally have a date for the sticky weekend 17th and 18th of January 2015. For anyone who hasn't attended before, it's a great opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills required for repairing and building boats, foils and spars etc. . Anyone planning on bringing projects / boats please post details so I can prepare.
Saturday evening social /meal will be in the local curry house
Accommodation, if you are feeling brave and have a good sleeping bag you are welcome to stay in the workshop or the local Travelodge is only about a mile away. There are also loads of local B&B's
The workshop address is - Unit B1, Oldmixon Crescent, Weston-s-Mare, North Somerset. BS24 9AY.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for hosting this once again!
Following last years mast success, I'd like to make a new pole for Norfolk. I have an appropriate mandrel and materials - just need the space and another pair of hands to complete it.

Hi Paul
As discussed previously we would like to re-varnish New Tricks if we can.
We will obviously rub down prior to arriving. There are also some holes in the deck where old fittings have been, could we put some hardwood dowels into these then cut and sand prior to spraying.
-
I can offer 3 rooms, 2 sofas, an abundance of floor space, coffee/tea and something to eat in the morning.
I live about 20 mins away next door to BCYC sailing club if anyone wants to try any of their mods out.

Hi Tom
Yes no problem, have you got any shrink tape?

Hi Simon
The best varnish to use is the international paints two-part perfection. The lacquers we use are not uv stable. Car lacquer is too brittle (it flakes of a carbon mast within a a few months but the perfection lasts years). Drying time may be an issue so if you can brush on a coat over most it and de nib we should be able to do the hardwood dowel and spray a coat on Friday evening (if you can make it) and one of Saturday evening.

I've not got any shrink tape, I was just intending on wrapping peel ply very tightly, followed by putting it in a vac bag. This seemed to work with the boom.
-
Nice one Paul, thank you for hosting this yet again - you are real class stalwart
I've got a couple of relatively small projects.
I. Loco's mast - needs a bit of grinding down and then a repair near the upper spreaders, making good and the spreaders glueing back on.
II. Fit lifting foil to main foil - I hope to screed the vertical foil prior to January, family situation permitting.
Somehow I double-ordered carbon when making the vertical foil and I have acres of weave and uni, available free to small projects or at a very reasonable price if anybody wants lots. I think it's all around the 180-200gsm weight ie fairly hefty.

Hi,
I'd like to make a new pole if possible - mine is bent and doesn't fit properly anyways. Does anyone have a mandrel that they aren't using I could borrow, and what materials will I need to buy and brig with me to make one?
Cheers,
Robin :)
-
If possible id like to attempt to make a T-foil from rolands moulds if they are not being used.
again as robin says, 'what materials will I need to buy and brig with me to make one?'
Failing that, i am happy to be an emergency pair of hands.
-
Hi Robin.
I have that class pole madral in Southampton.
I am not planning on going to the sticky weekend.
I am more than happy to pass it on to anyone who is.
Clive.
-
Paul, I will be down on Friday. What time suits you as you obviously have work going on.
Also do you have s small piece of dowel we could relieve you of?
The plan is to take off fittings and rub down with 380/420 paper as suggested by int paints at home this weekend. Then get a coat on Friday night and then one on Saturday Afternoon
-
Just to gauge rough numbers - who is planning to kip at mine?
-
Polly's is nearer, there are also beds at mine.
-
Thanks for the offer both of you. We're at the Premier inn.
-
Hi Robin, have you managed to arrange getting the pole mandrel from Southampton?
Simon, you can arrive any time Friday, the workshop is quite empty at the moment. We start at 8am.
-
Would there be any room for fuzzy to mend a leak, transom and other little bits and pieces
-
Hi Paul,
Unfortunately not arranged anything, as i don't have the materials or money for materials. looks like ill just repair and use the bent pole for a while until i can make a new one :)
Cheers,
Robin
-
Sorry to hijack (yippee ki yay!) but, can all those with unseen Cherub video please bring whatever they have to the sticky weekend on a memory stick/SD card.
After this weekend i will start to put footage together and dont want new stuff coming after I start.

If you bring your old pole we can redo the joint to be flush and straight, I have enough materials spare for that.
-
Hi,
Due to time pressures I'm just down Saturday and my plan is:
i. Make good Loco's mast
ii. Shape the trailing edge of the new foil - screeding and cladding will be done at up and coming Midlands Sticky Saturday TBA
Will bring lots of various materials (carbon, epoxy, peel ply) which can be used (contributions to my beer fund welcome)
Looking forward to seeing you guys
-
Hi Paul,
Thanks very much for the offer, but it looks like I'm sailing on Sunday, and I've got a few more bits to sort out on the boom and on the hull on Saturday before it goes to get sprayed! :)
Cheers,
Robin
-
If I head up late Saturday is there a bed somewhere for me?
-
Well the sticky weekend has started, New Tricks has a nice new bit of veneer over the damaged transom, and some dowels/pegs in the surplus holes in the deck.
Tomorrows plan is to Finnish those then paint the hull interior before masking up and varnishing the woodwork.
-
There is plenty of space for you to sleep at mine.
-
New Tricks was looking fantastic yesterday and it's a shame there won't be room for two boats at the show
Many thanks to Paul, Roland and Jamie for sterling work on Loco's mast. It turned out there was less wrong than feared and with a little more carbon around the spreaders we'll be back to as new.
Loco's new foil made good progress and I can now finish it at a Midlands Sticky Saturday.
Lots of laminating of foils going on there today.
-
Sunday of the sticky weekend, after the curry the night before we were all wired and ready to go.
job 1, stare in amazment at new tricks
job 2, laminate pauls Turbo X2 foil
job 3, vacbag foil
its fair to say new tricks looks stunning, well done Paul for an amazing paint job.
Dean, Si, Paul and me were all making the foil with roland hiding in Pauls office, the 1st half took an hour if im not mistaken, the second half took 35 minuets and the bottom pannel took even less as its smaller.
Vac-bagging is very cool and a skill i wish to improve on... got some plans lines up.
As always, thanks to paul for organising and holding the sticky weekend, another unique part of our class.
-
Huge thanks to Paul for once again donating his workshop and time this weekend.
New tricks is looking amazing but I'm having trouble uploading photos to the site,
Ro or Jamie if you pm me an email address I'll send you what I have for a write up/ news article
