Sailing around britian with a brain tumour...
« on: July 21, 2010, 12:56:54 PM »
I imagine most you know I work in advertising, well in an attempt to help keep my soul out of the fiery pit when my time comes, I give my time for free to Brain Tumour Research.  As the name suggests this is a charity set up to focus money in the area of medical research into brain tumours. An area of cancer that receives very little research funding. We aim to change this. Brain tumours also kill more children and adults under 40 than any other cancer and have the lowest 5 year survival rate, just 14%. Whats more a very large percentage of public perceived curable cancers like breast cancer go on to present as brain tumours thus skewing statistics.

Anyway enough of the waffle.

Currently a very brave lady 'Josie' is sailing around Britain with a brain tumour. To raise awareness of the need for Brain Tumour Research and to raise funds.

If you feel moved enough to click this link: http://www.contessa32.co.uk/ please have a read and please do something, even if that is telling your friends at the sailing club or posting on Y&Y etc...

Thanks in advance.

Daryl

Brain tumours also kill more children and adults than any other cancer

http://www.statistics.gov.uk/downloads/theme_health/DR2008/DR_08.pdf
or
http://www.statistics.gov.uk/downloads/theme_health/DR2008/Table5.2.xls

(bottom of p38)
In 2008 1944+1358=3302 deaths altogether from "Malignant neoplasms of eye, brain and other parts of central nervous system", which includes brian tumours.

(towards bottom of p32)
In 2008 17233+13093= 30326 deaths just from "Malignant neoplasm of trachea bronchus and lung", which is just the lung cancers, out of the hundreds of cancers out there (though it is a very big one).

In children (up to 19 years), in 2008, brian tumours killed 1+9+21+10+15+11+14+8+6=95, more than lung cancer (none) and a fair fraction of all malignant cancer deaths in those ages: 306 (of 5700 deaths altogether in that age group), and it does appear to be the most frequent.
