i was wondering where to get wire for shrouds from? also what diameter/type are normally used.

We had a bulk delivery form Ormiston about 6 years ago (i.e. pre-cherub). The "difficult"  (or more accurately the bit you pay a chandler for) is getting the terminations on.

As with all things BGM we have the equipment and wired both BS and EJ's rigs, but I would recommend that if your rig is insured you should be paying a chandler for the service - he will also supply the wire. Actually most chandlerrs insist on supplying the wire.

I get most of my  wire from mail order chandlers, made up, you just have to specify the lengths.

You can use 4mm 1x19 stainless steel for pretty much everything, although more expensive and less streachy is dyform which I think comes in 2.5 and 3.5mm 1X7 sizes the 3.5 is good for shrouds

I really like the Dyform. The CST mast on the Badger (ex primal and Phil) has 3.5 Dyform on the shrouds, and 2.5 on the uppers.

2.5 mm dyaform should be more than enough for cherub rigging 3mm is available to.

You'll be shocked at how hellishly expensive it is to rig up a mast if you take it to a chandlers like P&B... as they will charge you an hourly rate as well as for the hardware. My mast cost over £300 and that wasn't the full set of rigging as it all ready had a part set from it's previous life.


EDIT: I should add this price wasn't just wire work, it was moving fittings around and cutting new 'T' terminals holes etc..

Wet and windy did the main shroud and D2's on e-numbers.  They do charge an rate per swage but the swaged terminations cost a bit too.

I paid about £100 for this ex the mast hooks which came seperately from NZ.   Don't ask! These by the way take 3mm 1x19 wire.

My mast will only have two bits of wire on it, the shrouds. I want something proven and solid to keep my mast up. The uppers, D2s and the forestay will all be string. The forestay can be a bigger diameter. I don't have lowers.

PBO is V expensive and needs a sheath. Dan is using Sk78 (or it might be 75) which is what I'm going for. It's stretchier but cheaper and more UV resistant.

String doesn't require a swaging machine or terminals making it both cheaper and easier to do at home. It's lighter and it looks pimp.

I have had Marlow SK78 3mm on my uppers & lowers for the past two seasons and it has been fine. (It is splice-able like normal dymema core. Use thimbles at the ends).
If you do this be sure splice an outer cover over it where uppers go through the spreaders as it will wear there.

I recon it saved about 400g from the rig and as that is 'high' weight saved there is extra benefit. Downside is it replaced 2.5mm wire so more windage.
