I would like to clarify. Ronin is not a scaled down 14.
During the design process Mr. Bieker spent considerable time evaluating not only the then current Cherub designs (the Slug, Jam and P7) he also looked very closly at the Woof lines.
There is obviously a trend in hull profile with Paul's way of thinking, as is with most designers, a continuation/evolution of form. If you rigged my 1980's Cherub "Charlie Don't Surf" 2610 next to a current 18 footer you would be able to see quite clearly that both were from the drawing board of Oz legend Iain Murray.
To suggest Mr Bieker simply hit the scale down button is not cool and shows a lack of respect towards a very talented and widely respected naval architect.

My bad! I thought it was scaled down and tweaked to conform to Cherub rules but it appears to be a lot more in depth than that. No disrespect intended. He designed a boat that won the nationals and that deserves some credibility . Just my usual ill-informed self...

Not being particularly well educated in Far Eastern language or history (unlike 007), I stuck "Yojimbo" into google and the 2nd hit came up with this: Yojimbo (Film, 1961), "A crafty ronin comes to a town divided by two criminal gangs and decides to play them against each other......". If that wasn't intentional then that's seriously freaky.

A Ronin was a samurai with no lord or master during the feudal period (1185–1868) of Japan. A samurai became masterless from the ruin or fall of his master (as in the case of death in a war), or after the loss of his master's favor or privilege.

Usagi Yojimbo "rabbit bodyguard" is a comic book series created by Stan Sakai in 1984. Set primarily at the beginning of Edo period Japan (early 17th century), with anthropomorphic animals replacing humans, it features a rabbit ronin, Miyamoto Usagi. Usagi wanders the land on a musha shugyo (warrior's pilgrimage) occasionally selling his services as a bodyguard.

So Usagi Yojimbo is a type of Ronin. The Rabbit is known to live on the edge, not least with classics like "I like that women. Her ears were too small and she lacked fur, but she was nice."

But design wise there is no link; Usagi Yojimbo is the 2nd E5 and Ronin is the only Bieker.
They do both have very similar rigs; SuperSpars and Hydes.
Whilst Ronin is similar in looks to the Bieker5 I14 (and what a great pedigree) the phrase 'scaled down' can only by used loosely.

Ronin/GT60/B1C, like the rogue Samurai, has always been a little confused with his identity & name. I thought it was just Kiwi boats that are given male names? Do you think he is about ready for a sex change Princey?

there we go i wasn't far wrong with ronin, and all i watched was the film with de-niro in it.

so if the beiker 5 is the parent boat for the gt60 does that mean ronin will evenutally grow up and turn into a 14 lol

We didn't get sailing last weekend Pete - complete glass out at QMSC.  The next possible time to sail due to time off for skiing will be the Bloody Mary.  Perhaps a little extreme for first flotation.  To clear up where the name came from, it is the series of graphic novels, and in that vein some form of samurai rabbit transfer will go on the boat.  In the meantime watch this.

It seemed to me at the time that most of the talk about the GT60 being a scaled down 14 was emanating from the GT60 camp. I was pretty confident that it had to be an exaggeration*, but figured that it was probably something to do with establishing some separation from the Daemon in the trials. It didn't seem to me it would have been a good thing to dispute the point at the time and although I had some design info, it was under NDA so I didn't think it was right to do a comparison between shapes.

I'm must say I'm suprised no-one else has built a boat to that shape. It looks pretty sweet to me. For what little my opinion is worth I'd not be at all suprised if it were a better all round performer than some of its competitors.

*apart from anything else Cherub/14 scaling exercises have failed on at least 3 previous occasions from one direction or the other - something I've discussed with PB in the past.

Andy, if you would like some instruction in the use of a 'Jo' ( the only weapon to beat the samurai sword ) I'll be happy to show you a few moves. Just in case your 'Physco Rabbit' misbehaves and you need to show him / her who's the boss!

Lads, are we not missing some of the most important weapons:

"Lucy" - Dececptively able to handle a spinnaker sheet that would decapitate rather than strangle.
"Roz" - Definitely has special powers, if only I could get close enough to them on the water to work out how they do it.
"Hayley" - Holds the fragile control over sanity and is sorely missed as I sit in a hotel room 100's of miles away.

The power to retain absolute optimism and incredible patience even when nothing is going right.

The power to control the child like excitment of seeing bits of new Cherub and be able to then converse with a person without a sailing bone in their body about the most boring bits of work.

Most Cherubers qualify for these all though some of us occasionally fall short.

Although there is plenty of history in the Cherub fleet of boats with male names, Charlie Don't Surf, Flat Stanley and Jonny Fartpants spring to mind, I've always considered boats should have a female name.

When the B1c was originally built and taken to the trials (as the GT60) she was called Beatrix Kiddo. Who was quite handy with a sword!! But after her nose job she came out of the workshop renamed Ronin.

Yojimbo looks fantastic, excellent job.

2009 is shaping up to be a great year for the class. Good work guys and girls.
