Sticky Weekend - November 22nd 23rd - Paul Crootes Warehouse

We have a sticky Weekend scheduled for the weekend of November 22nd and 23rd at Paul Crootes brilliant Cherub Bimbling paradise. The aim of the weekend is to let people do some boat building in a semi controlled atmosphere with the help of class 'experts'. Last year projects included a new boom, a spinnaker pole, daggerboard repairs, boom extensions to name but just a few.

This year, we have been given the opportunity to do some foils with the aid of Paul who has the skills to manufacture wooden cores for laminating. I, personally, am very keen to build a new solid core daggerboard for the 'Badgers Nadgers' as it has a bit of a history of eating expanded foam boards! If you would like to build a foil then please show your interest in this thread as it is essential that we get the dimensions for the foils in good time so that Paul can produce the blanks so we can then shape them and laminate them over the weekend.

If we could start a list of people that wish to build any foils, be it daggerboards, rudders, or t-foils please state what it is you wish to build and then we can go into more details of sizes and sections. If you plan to do any other projects then please also give us a show of hands just so we can put some sort of structure into the weekend to make best use of time, tools and most importantly, peoples expertise!

We'll bring preshaped blanks and hope to lay up and bag two t foils and two rudders. One is for us and the other is for the SK4.

Its the one I have been talking about for months and some might even have seen at the nationals -  the one that looks like a manta ray.

Ooo! Sounds interesting.  We would be really interested in doing some foil work.  I was intending to use a foam core for our new foils but if all goes to plan I will have those complete by the sticky weekend.  We might have a t foil and rudder blade to join together.   Things never go to plan so this will be a good lesson before we do our own.

I think the weekend will be a good oportunity for us to build a pole or boom because there is a bit more space at paul's work shop. However if like last time we have preprepared the mandrel it shouldn't take to long to lay up the cloths.  We might even get both layed up in one day.

I now own lots of carbon, and some bagging materials.  I didn't buy a life-times supply however because wiz gave me a good price on the quantities that I needed.

I'm there! Paul, I have a CAD file of the board which I wish to build. It has a chord of 30cm and will be 180cm long. What other dimensions do you need to make the blank?

Man that makes the one I put in Sgt Murphy look tiny at 165cm (and that is getting unmanageable). I have some pdf's of routign pattens for that board and the H105 if anyone wants them

I plan to add the extra length in the un tapered top section so I can chop it down as required. Being a snip at 13 and a bit stone now, I might not need the extra length for power generation!!

If Mr Slippy is reading this then he knows the section as he designed it. I am going to be making a board which looks like that jpeg file. I believe it has a chord length of 30cm and is a NACA 0010 section. Someone please correct me if I am wrong!

PDFs of routing pattens files attached. Foil is on A4 sheets, CB on A3. Numbers indicate the thickness of the blank not depth into an unknown block!

Is it possible to have the centreboard  on one page (max page size of my plotter is 50 metres  x .91metres). if not can you scale it onto A3 and I will scale it up, cheers

could you prepare a h105 blank for me? If born slippery could send me the routing profiles - how long is it? I'm thinking somewhere in the region of 2 meters would suit.....I haven't done any detailed calculations but have in mind something along the lines of the rs600 FF.  I'd also like to build a boom off your mould but it sounds like that is engaged for the weekend. would there be a possibility of bringing it back to southampton for a spell? further to that I'd like to make some arrangements to build a mast sometime next year. I'm given to understand that the class has the necessary mouldings so making contact with that is another plan.

I believe Patrick has the mandrel at the moment and might have a mast stuck on it. Mango Jam (now in France ) and Strangely brown both have masts made off it. Roland has some interesting ideas about mandrels and construction methods.
