Nationals 2016

Dear All,

Sadly I was unable to attend the Nationals and the AGM, can someone advise whether a decision was made about a Nationals venue next year ?

Either way, not wishing to put a fly in the ointment, I may be able to arrange something up here on the East Coast at Harwich, a long weekend provisionally 4-7 th August. 

We have another dinghy class booked in who are happy to share the venue, we as a club would like to touch on 40 boats total entry or there abouts.

Hello Jamie,

Firstly just to let you all know one of the Committee team PM'd in less than 50 minutes today from my original posting, what a team !

We have in the club at this time "Johnny Fartpants" '91 rules, "Little Fluffy Cloud" '97 rules, "Suicide Blonde" '05 rules.  I believe Mersea Island will be active some time soon, the Bridles at Brightlingsea, Team Slaters boat moved to Orford I think, no doubt there are others not far away that may be encouraged to make an effort to boost the regular travellers.

Its early days yet and not a definite in anyway from both parties, so we'll do a bit more behind the scenes work and I will then give you all loads of detail on what the venue has to offer, and to confirm, not "Royal Harwich" up the Orwell, but Harwich Town S.C. at the entrance of Harwich Harbour with racing in Dovercourt/Penny Hole/Windmill Bay depending on you're local heritage !

Which class would we be sharing with?

At the moment, it is the Kestrels, the class that was lined up to share with them have requested an extension to a seven day event, we don't have the volunteers with the available time to commit to a whole week, assuming that the original sharing class find an alternative venue for a week then there is a slot available.

I can understand the importance of sharing with the right class, but I cannot see any conflict of interest providing the course arrangement is worked out and both parties like to drink beer ! More importantly its the venue and value for money with volunteers passionate about sailing and their club who will make an event for the class.

There is a large fleet of Kestrels at Royal Tay YC where I used to sail, and my Cherub crew Ken now crews a Kestrel there regularly. The characteristics of the boat are very different from a Cherub. They are very heavy, not especially quick, a good sea-boat, with a conventional rig and a small spinnaker. The folks who sail them are great people, but it's hard to see how they could share the same nationals race-course and keep both parties happy. Might be feasible if the club was able to run 2 different courses I suppose.

Talking at the Sidmouth club today I think they would be up for holding a joint championship with another class.Just another idea to be discussed where ever it is we need more 97 rules boats next year.

Dean Bd Si were on about the sheerwater class as potential sharers.

Have look at their Facebook page, suddenly it makes sense.

If we sailed separate race courses it would open the number of fleets we could sail with.
This would depend on the amount of water available.

But two courses would make the event much less attractive to the host club: two committee boats, two race teams, two sets of marks and ground tackle, .....

Agree that Kestrels are not ideal candidates for a joint event - too dissimilar in speed and characteristics. Shearwaters could work, though - relatively slow catamarans.

Harwich could be a good option - we haven't been East for a long time.  I agree with the comments regarding the Kestrels, too slow and symmetrical could lead to difficulties on the race course.  I think we went pretty well together with the 4 T's especially once they started first.  I'll see what they think about sharing again next year and mention HTSC as a possible venue.

Thx for the offer of Sidmouth but from google earth (and photos) the launching looks a little tricky for the modern cherub if the wind is up.  Bit of a shore break onto shingle could cause a but too much rash.  Is that fair?
