SOLD - CST 15 rig or just tube available
« on: November 25, 2013, 11:54:22 AM »
Hello all,

I have a spare I14 mast tube, which is a softer rig and thought it might be suitable for a cherub upgrade.

Mast - £200

CST 15
  - re clearcoated this year so it look very nice
  - Carbon track with a glass track tip above hounds
  - still has hounds, caps and lower shroud attachments bonded on, but they could be removed or moved easily
     -  length 7850mm from a cockpit stepped boat (14 max mast height is 7626mm)
  - broken in 2006 at lowers but done 7 season since without issue.

Adjustable cst carbon spreaders For this rig are 75 more for both when bought with the tube
Or 120 for the pair separately.

Regards,

Ed

pm me for private email or phone number
Location Weston Sailing club, can be moved to Salisbury (home), Guildford (family home) or Sunbury on Thames (work)

Your mast is quite a bit longer than the Cherub class rules allow so would need to be shortened by 1m at least.

A buyer would probably need to know where the spreader brackets are in relation to 1 end of the mast.

The E5 Cherub mast has top spreaders 1.9m from the top, lower spreaders approx 2m below that and then mast foot about 2.5m below that.  That is stepped on a short stump at rack level.

It may be that 1 set of spreaders needs to be moved and or a bit of mast taken off both ends.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the response.

Yes indeed it is a bit long and would be a project for someone.

I dont have the measurements from the top but i can get them on Friday.

I realise it would need adapting, but the benefit of bonded fittings for the hounds/ lowers and uppers, is that adaptation will not need structural repairs, just grinding/sanding them off if required and putting in a new place, or even just encouraging off, really depends on the adhesive the Beer boatyard used.

I will report back by the weekend.

Regards,

Ed

ps: hope the Sticky Weekend goes well for people, i was hoping to attend this year, but a clash curtailed that.

I understand the CST15 was the softer 14 rig of its day (about 20% softer on both axis than the very common CST14) So although it will look a bit hefty at around 65mm OD it might not be too far out the ballpark for a Cherub rig. For reference the newer HM masts are around 20% stiffer than my CST14 benchmark.

Spreader heights will obviously move about so you'll have to wait for Ed for exact numbers, but just in case anyone's thinking about this: as a rough guide I would expect about 2m from the tip to the upper spreaders, and about another 2.6m down to the lower spreaders. For a Cherub length mast you would be cutting just above the gooseneck.

Ben,

good knowledge and to agree with that here is the email i got from CST when i was finding out which mast i had.

Quote
Your mast is a 2006 mast and is a CST15, which was the standard I14 mast at the time. This mast is approximately 20% softer fore and aft + sideways than the CST14. The current HM mast for I14’s is approximately 20% stiffer fore and aft + sideways than the CST14

As mentioned i will report back on the weekend.

Primal Scream started of with an ex I14 CST mast I found it a bit stiff with the sails I had which were quite full by current standards, the square top mains seem to be flatter, and work better with stiffer masts.
It also broke at the gooseneck, was repaired, used again and eventually made its way onto Badgers

Phil, the mast worked fine on Badgers. I agree that it would have been a bit of a beast had we had 'full sized' sails, but it certainly gave an increase in power to the rig moving over from the Selden yet it was still quite controllable with a decent helping of kicker and cunningham.

Any interest?

This is a bargain for a suitable carbon mast.
