EVO Version 1.5
« on: July 09, 2013, 12:25:58 AM »
With Team Trim getting their new ride up to speed: Evo has come to live with me in (currently surprisingly sunny) Scotland.

The boat traveled most of the way north courtesy of Rolands extensive travel schedule and then was kindly put up on Hoppy's driveway for a couple of weeks until I finally managed to collect her about 3 weeks ago.

Anyone whos listened to me talking about a new boat over the last couple of years will know that I've been thinking solid 49er style wings are the way to go on an '05 boat for a while and Clive's new design has provided the push for me to go for a conversion for EVO before shes relaunched. To facilitate this the deck is to be removed at or slightly below the rolled gunwales and new sections built from CNC cut flat panels will be fitted.

The shape of the hull and existing deck/structure is being reverse engineered from photographs to facilitate the design of the new panels.

The boat arrived stripped of most of her fittings and the outer wing bars already removed (Possibly Rolands way of making sure I comitted and followed through with my plans!)

Progress so far has seen the rear rack support removed and topcoat stripped from the hull. Since the topsides would need to be re-faired anyway it made sense to go the whole way and take everything back to a base level so a rather vigorous session with the long board followed. The pink is a fairing dye exposing the low spots following the first rough sand.

The flat panels are being made up next weekend and the 'big cut' will be made when I get back from Dun Laoghaire next week. Progress should be fairly rapid to begin with but I expect the details to take a fair bit longer!

I'm hoping to be on the water by the end of the season but the nationals is not realistic. Making the Inlands is a tentative deadline, but don't hold me too it!

Top work Ben. Looks like you have made light work of the sanding. Looking forward to seeing how this progresses! Hopefully your progression will spur me on to finish mine. My hypothetical deadline is 11 days away and I can't see it happening at this stage!

You're not fooling anyone Hayley....just you wait until Roland realises you ordered quick-fade paint and sailcloth for Poppy
Previously 2685 'Loco Perro' and 2345 'Tachyon'

Shhh!

Actually a little bit of fading might not be such a bad thing. In this lovely sunshine i need super dark polaroid sunglasses to sail - not for the sun, but the boat  ;D

Time for an update I think!

Progress has been pretty casual for the last few weeks as my week away translated into about 2 further weeks of catching up in work…  I’ve also been dragging my heels a bit while I wait for materials. The foam to make up my flat panels arrived this week but was promptly sent back to the supplier as it had been trashed in transit. All this means I haven’t been able to do much at all in the way of boat building.

Boat de-building is progressing though, much to the concern and amusement of the Solo fleet at the sailing club.

Last weekend I levelled the boat up laterally using the chines as a datum and marked on the height of the new sheer line at the fore and aft ends. I was then able to use a highly technical ‘old car tyre’ based pitch control system to join up the 2 points with a horizontal  line-laser to draw on a perfectly level dotted line labelled ‘cut here’.

It’s safe to say that there is now an awful lot less cherub than I started with. I’m quite looking forward to gluing some important bits back on now…

Genius. Is that a luggage scale in the photo?
I'd love to hear just how heavy the deck was...

It is indeed a luggage scale. I wouldn't recommend the class starts using one for official measuring, but its a nice guide to keep me on track!
