Wobbly Tiller

The issue is the hole that the rudder pin goes through on top of the tiller is starting to wear, when this first happened we carboned on a washer so the pin ran through it. As this has now come off does anyone know of anything that can be used to sleave the pin and stop the wear. This will be another project for the sticky weekend.

I have had the same problem with the bottom plate of the rudder, and with the pin in glued a carbon plate top and bottom. I made sure that I used hard filler mix in the middle to fill the void warn by the pin. It has not moved since.

If the top of the tiller is round, this is a bit more difficult and I would probably make up a tube of glass around the pin to act as a larger bearing surface, then open out the holes in the tiller and bond the glass tube into the top of the tiller.

This happened on my old stock with a round tiller, what I did was take two penny washers and drill the hole to match the pin diameter, then greased the pin and araldited the two washers to the top and bottom of the tiller. When that set I removed the stock and wound carbon around the tiller over the washers, redrilling through the carbon when done. The job was a good-un, but as it was me there was resin everywhere.

OOOh! Graham did some sticky work.

My solution when building rudder stocks is to bond some pull-truded carbon tube into the tiller or bottom plate. This means drilling an oversize hole in the tiller tube allowing the carbon tube to be bogged in.  To ensure a perfect line up the carbon tube/s can be fitted while on a waxed rudder pin. it is easier to to start with overlong carbon tube and cut it down once cured.
