You can get a bit of info on how the RSS for the forum works by looking at:

 http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=25009.0

The bit on the front page uses the RSS parser that is built into the Dokuwiki software to display the feed from the forum. It is setup to refresh on an hourly basis.
