We won't be joining in - but we will be able to see you.  We are racing lead mines in the IRC Nationals from Cowes Fri-Sunday.

RVYC ( and the regatta )  is at Fishbourne - right next to the Wightlink car ferry from Portsmouth - launching from the old ferry slipway.

They can probably get some good deal for discounted tickets.

Nearest place to sail over from is Stokes Bay.  ~ 3 miles?

Gordon Williams won't be attending - he is with the cherubs upstairs...

I recall that there was  weighing of the winners at the nationals mentioned - oops underweight DSQ, try the next one - oops underweight DSQ, and so on until 6th place when Merris Catton/Gordon Williams are pronounced the champions!

Can you believe that for the first 1970's Cherub open at Gurnard I think there were 26 boats!!!

Before  my time of course but I  heard that it was sail measurement - the nylon cloths of those days were anything but stable and a kite that measured when it was brand new could be quite a way out a little while later. The first couple of Nationals I did they measured all the sails before the racing started and there was some kind of trick you could do to "unstretch" a kite which involved taking it to a laundrette, but I've forgotten the detail.

Ah good times Neil.   ;)
For a few years we had an open at Royal Vic.  (When John Lobb was a member there)
The sail from Lee-on-Solent is a bit further than Lepe to Gurnard but not much, (~4 miles) in fact as long as there's some wind you could 'comute'.
For Lee open or Stokes bay persuit the boats based at Royal Vic quite often sailed over in the morning then back after the racing.
Us mainland crew just liked the idea of a piss up on the Isle of Wight.  We stayed in the clubhouse a couple of times, once at Johns house and I seem to recall sleeping in someones yacht one year.  Anyway, kit and sleeping bag in bin liners and boats left on the club lawn worked fine.  Just don't follow Flip Top's example and sleep on the pool table, or if you do clear the balls off first.  Also no-one is to attempt 'filling' the glass display case with the model yacht in to see if it floats.  If you must play that getting round the room without touching the floor game don't use the curtain rails and surely nobody would play drunken doctors and nurses on the stainless slab in the kitchen. . .

Dave,

sounds like your advice is from experience.

Who do we know who would consider playing doctors and nurses?

I would be concerned if this got out of hand and somone started playing open heart surgery.

Unfortunately we can't make this one. it sounds like a hoot though.

I don't believe I did any of the Royal Vic events, so it wasn't me, but I doubt you any of you folks would know any of the parties who might have been involved as it must be going back fifteen or twenty years.

Ah yes, I remember it well (sort of).   Very messy. . .

It was my boat you slept in, the year after I left the class and I turned-up in it to take pics and hand-out beer to the becalmed Cherubbers. .

Dean visited the club while on holiday this week, they have confirmed that they can sort a discount on the ferry but will need to know soon.
Stu have you confirmed any details with them?

OK, lets start talking about this one. I know its not part of the travellers circuit, but RVYC is a prestigous place to go and in our 60th, and their 50th year its a good opportunity for some much needed publicity. Entry is only a tenner and you get 6 races so it would be good to get at least 5 there. I know Eleanor and Usagi cant, and Roit Van and Exultant can - are the rest in ?

If we can get the logistics for this one sorted, then we will be on.

It's probably a good idea for all interested parties to sit down over a beer this weekend.

Agreed, we will have much to talk about !

Can we find out if the clubs offer of ferry discount is still available? it looks to me like a car, 4 adults and a trailer up to 2m high is approx £100 ...

So we can put this into the equation ....

Due to an adverse forecast this has now been re-scheduled for the 3rd/4th of September.
I will speak to Dean however this does clash with our annual swim/sail round Sheppey.
