1982 U.K. Cherub Nationals

14-16th August 1982

Warsash SC hosted the nationals from August 14th to 16th. The pleasing turnout of 20 boats were unpleased to find out that the members of Warsash Sailing Committee who knew this three day event was to be organised had left the country. The remaining committee members had organised a two day open meeting, with help from Lee on Solent SC a three day event was arranged. Unfortunately this event turned out to be a vastly shortened championship dues to strong and blustery winds. However Ian brown and Pete Selby sailed impressively in the difficult conditions to become 1982 Cherub National Champions.

The first race on Saturday mustered a good fleet of boats from all parts of the UK. The wind was light to moderate and variable in direction. Ian Brown and Pete Selby soon worked out a good lead which they held throughout the race to cross the line closely pursued by Andy and Pat Paterson.

Sunday dawned overcast and the first race started in a freshening Force 5. Brown again nosed in front of the Cope brothers on the beat, while the following downwind legs proved very fast and exciting with several place changes dues to capsizes. Brown again won, followed by the Copes with Bill Deeley 3rd. Anticipating the second race the Cherubs sailed around for an hour until the race committee decided to call it a day.

Monday's race was delayed by 15minutes but once the preparatory signal was seen it not only summoned the competitors but also a very strong wind. The race was held over a vastly shortened course with the Patersons taking line honours with Alistair and Matthew Cope second and Lewington third. The wind was forecast to increase still further so competitors were sent home.

Despite this shortened series, sailed in very demanding conditions, excellent sailing and boat handling techniques were demonstrated by this highly competitive fleet, especially by the winners Ian Brown and Pete Selby.
