foam ( EPP / EPS ) core cutting for foils
« on: September 02, 2010, 10:28:09 AM »
I have just started flying model gliders. Mostly EPP slope soaring combat wings at the moment.

On my internet travels I found this LINK: http://www.flyingfoam.com/QuickOrderDetails.html

It looks like a very good way of making very repeatable foil blanks at a cheap rate for 'T' foils. Certainly strong enough for rudder blades. Not sure about daggerboards though. I would have thought with the insertion of an 'I' beam this could work also if they will cut up to the correct size.

Anyway I thought I'd post the link as it may be of use to others.

Glad to see you all had a good nationals.

Oh Cock! Looking deeper into the website they say they don't post outside the USA! I suppose if anyone has family in the US they could post it on. but then it gets pricey.

OK here's a link to a UK company. I doubt it is quite as cost effective though. http://www.foamwings.co.uk/Pages/Wings/BespokeWingDetails.asp

Also just found this link: http://www.tekoa.com/feather-cut-c-2-p-1-pr-1.html for anyone ( class? ) wishing to hot wire their own foam core foils rather than build a home made hot wire death trap :-)

I've thought about this too as well. I have a combat wing which is seriously robust, I know some guys who did some pylon racing at MVSA with full carbon gliders and they were built using similar construction techniques to our foils.

We had a go with a hot wire death trap, and I think the key to getting it to work is keeping the tension up on the wire as it stretches when hot.

I think there was a link on SA recently with some more info about foam cores. Will see if I can find it later.

We have a CNC machine which we are happy to be used for cutting foam blanks only, our design to your specs.  or your shape - just supply us a 3d file. . . . .

We also have Aluminium female moulds for high aspect Daggerboard, Rudder and Lifting foil.
