Vac Pump
« on: December 15, 2009, 09:33:13 AM »
Hi,

I'm looking to borrow/hire/buy a vacuum pump to do some repairs to my 14 next week.  I'm based near Guildford in Surrey and can travel to pick one up.  If anyone has any ideas on where I might be able to source one that would be great - if not I'll try using a fridge compressor instead!

Cheers, Phil.

I got mine from e-bay, no problems with it so far. I am near Glasgow so it would be a bit of a trip from Gilford, there will be someone closer

For small jobs try modding a tyre compressor. For bigger jobs it is possible to run two together and T them together at the bag input.

I believe that these can be sourced on e-bay from about £130 new.

Born slippy bought one last year and has made a whole boat.  He might be able to identify the seller or the make of the pump.

A good brand is Edwards.  Vacum pumps used for vac bagging will have an oil sump.   They are rated in volume removed per minute and an overal relative pressure.

It is worth using if you are doing a number of jobs as you can get a much better consolidation than hand layup and much lower resin content unless you are carefull.

the other consumables required for vac bagging can be substituted by similar products available from a DIY store. I think other threads have identified them previously.

BMG's pump is in Sidcup, but buried somewhere near the spinni's I failed to dig out this weekend. If I can get to Sidcup and dig it out you can happily collect it from there? However I can guarentee I will not be able to do this before Sunday (as I am in Holland...).

The pump cost about £130 from a German ebay house and looks very simialar to those now offered from HK.

Hi Born Slippy,

that sounds like it might work out as I'm not too far from Sidcup on Sunday/monday.  Are you looking to sell it?

I would be happy to loan it for a few weeks - I'm between houses so any work on boats is on hold until early Jan. As soon as I have a new place I have a mast tip and a bottom section, some Kestral parts (?) to make and Born Slippy to sort out,  so will need it back . I'll PM you when I have been to Sidcup and actually dug it out of a box.

Ok great, that sounds like a plan.
