Winter 2022 - 2023 mods

We usually have a winter mods post, unfortunately I had been o busy with mine I hadn’t started a thread or posted any pictures.

Over the Christmas break I decided to start building a new stock for poppy, one with a more angled tiller tube so it would clear the gunwales an not scrape across the floor when on ‘full off’ mode.
 It’s going well and nearly done. Just waiting on a new spray gun to arrive and things will get shiny.

In the meantime I have also started a new gantry. But of an emergency job as the current one is rather noisy when at speed and not doing much for my confidence.

Has anyone else put boat time over their family at Christmas/new year?

Mast extensions for stangely brown and dangerous strawberry (she gets BSs old mast)

Mast machine appears to work VERY well for wet layup. The thin 90s exert a fair consolidation preasure as they wind on.


This 1.8m section took 3 hours from start to running away to see a client. Less than Radio4s Today programme streamed. This way i might be able to layup a whole mast in one (very long) day.

If anyone is after a new tfoil set up, I’m looking in to getting a new batch of bulbs made out of stainless or titanium.

Martyn and I have made foils, we can offer you the 4 moulds for the foil that has been on poppy for a year and a bit, or I can offer to make you a set (will be made when I am able to and will probably cost you materials and a beer)
The bulb cost drops a lot depending on how many they make. To make a rudder and a horizontal cost me about £400 in 2020 (it spend a year sat on my shelf)

The design challenge was to make a competitive foil set up that would allow for easy transport and flexibility in foil design. As you can see from the photos the rudder consists of one vertical foil, a connecting bulb and a horizontal foil. Martyn conducted some CFD on our design in solid works and produced the model for the moulds.

This means both the horizontal and the vertical foil can be swapped out depending on the conditions/crew weight/design and development. (We have a big, medium and small horizontal set in the works)
Equally, there is a work around for you if you don’t want a new vertical rudder blade that would fit this bulb/horizontal.

a&es daggerboard leaks have been our to do...

after failing to fix them from the outside the only thing left to do was open the lid and do the job the long way!!

It wood appear so (sorry couldnt resist)

its not caused any issue being there and didnt really fancy cutting the boat up much more to figure out how to remove/replace with foam.....

anyway shes been sealed up so should be watertight, just need to pick up some progrip and hope it will hide our sins!

Could be worse. In an effort to fit some of the go faster mods. I’ve found my spoiler uprights with the pivot for my gantry have been warn away over the years from the thread on the gantry bolts. This is mostly due to the washes (that were stuck to the uprights) becoming unstuck. It looks worse than it is as a fair bit of paint is missing.

I could replace these with like for like foam panels. But I think I’m going to go for solid plate so I never have to do this again?
Rather undecided with what to do, time to eat some cheese and hit the sack to find the best answers!

Pretty much done.

New paint is from Jawell, same ral code as the previous red.
It’s also super glossy!

Made, fitted and sailed now.
Got half way though making this and realised there is a much better way of doing it.
There’s a few paint dribbles on the inner face but ultimately, I’m happy with it.

Can hold load and is very red.
