Covid-19
« on: March 29, 2020, 02:20:44 PM »
First of all hopefully we are all well. Since we have lockdown like many people I've found myself with a LOT of spare time on my hands, so thoughts have turned once again to playing around with king tubby. Firstly she got a new graphic on the fore deck, drunken Ebay shopping is responsible for that one.

The second is that I'm back to looking at a t foil rudder, which, means cutting the gantry off the back and building a new one, plus the need for wheelie bars. I'm getting bored of trying to fall off that back corner and I'm sure my crews would also appreciate it not happening.

What have the rest of you been up to?
If in doubt flat out

Love the sticker!

I do hope I can shrink my never ending to do list while I’m limited on distractions.

A started making a gantry. It’s nearly finished and weighs half as much as the one Roland made many years ago.
Hopefully I won’t be quoting Sinéad O'Connor, where do I go wrong, when I use it.

Thoughts turned to dissolving the foam in the wings of poppy. It’s polystyrene, drilled some holes. Poured in acetone but the sludge hasn’t come out (or at least I don’t think so)

Other plans are a new stock, building the small diameter mast, new trolly cradles and fix the trolly....
But I’m sure the list will grow before all of this is over.
Thanks
Jamie

Ive been playing with a vac pump over the last few weeks!!! i know a bit basic compared to some's efforts in the fleet but despite my beginner status i feel it turned out well!!

A&E  has had a new jib track, fingers crossed the crew won't have to kick the jib across in the tacks any more!!

just need to stick the mast up to check if I've plugged it in the right place!!!

Also a few bits of routine maintenance, we found out at nationals that our boatbreaker was missing its dummy forestay and had to use kite sheets to improvise!! not ideal so new one made with rope shackle as i now have time on my hands!!

also the push rod seems to have lost length when the ball on the bottom of it fell off so new push rod through the main foil, should help take off earlier and fly higher when needed!!

Sadly EJ is stuck at Stokes so no work being done on her but hopefully going to get the mast sorted.
Besides that I've been sorting out a little Europe I bought just after xmas.
She was untidy and needed some love but now shes looking pretty shiny and ready to go.

The gantry is almost done, I have a few more imperfections to fair out, but then it’s time for some paint and lacquer, will have to wait for the world to resume before the latter one happens.

I found a hairline crack on my kickbar, probably from the rapid increase in crew weight recently.
Have patched that and beefed it up. Thoughts now turn towards progrip.

Project 3 has been a daggerboard. I went with a non fancy layup this time so I can smash i it out and not worry about how it looks too much. Currently waiting on mr postman to allow me to finish.

I am loving all of this time off. But dreading the return to work, the only upside is i should hopefully be able to go sailing again.
Thanks
Jamie

further progress has been made on the t foil project, with the joint between vertical and horizontal now sorted. this will allow us to experiment with different shaped horizontals in the future.

That Gantry looks lovely, is it spread tow cloth?

Back in November we broke the top spreader with the kite up. The camera caught it.

The tube seems to have survived, but the megga bend cracked the track off, and damaged the main spreader bracket.  I am finally geting around to fixing the various bits.

The spread tow does look nice, and I have fancied trying it out but not had quite the component to try it on. How is it to work with?

It wasn’t too difficult. But I did use and odd method (recommended by my Moth friends.)
I spray tacked it in place, trimmed to shape, then poured resin over and impregnated the cloth with it.
Peelply and vaced in place.
If I do this again I would try stippling (old skool I know) but using the plastic card did deform the weave slightly.

Oooo la la!

That looks like excellent fun! Although... #SlamThatStem!

My porn gantry have way at the Blast weekend during a round up after a kite drop. Lessons learned. The sticky out plates need to be stronger. Will sand back and work on at some point.

Other things I need to sort;
Main battens. I have two mains where I think all of the battens are a little too short... for various reasons.
Is any of nerdy enough to know what stiffness battens we need? Bainbridge have this link
http://www.bainbridgeint.com/PDFdocuments/Z20%20-%20Aquabatten%20Selection.pdf

Yet to try the long daggerboard board...
Thanks
Jamie
