South Coast Cherubing
« on: July 27, 2016, 05:00:04 PM »
Starting this for us south coast cherubs to post about our training/racing days and let other people know we are around and sailing.

23rd August, Madge and Green Bannanas hit the water for some training, Green Bannanas getting out earlier than Madge after leaving the bungs in the car!

Conditions were nice warm sunny weather, blowing around 12-15 knots building as the tide turned in Hayling Island bay. We stuck to sailing in the bay encase the breeze was to drop and us risk getting stuck outside the harbour. We didnt line up against each other, but both boats appeared to have good setup and comments exchanged as we passed each other. Madge opt'ed for some reaching and trapeze practise and successfully getting on the plane, upwind and on the reach, working on speed and control, while Green Bannanas was opting for the traditional windward leeward hoping to test the newly repaired forstay prodder. Catching the bottom a couple of times sent Madge into the chopper waters when the tide was turning, and GB got caught out with some of the chop which prompted a refreshing dip in the sea.

Big smiles all around and good day on the water, no breakage to report, but plenty of swimming.

Thanks
Greg

Another lovely sail down at Costa DeL Hayling.

Saw Cherubs Madge, Green Bananas and A+E ventured out on Sunday afternoon for sail. Wind was around 13-15knots gusting up 20knots at peak. The tide was flushing out, and we choose to stay inside the harbor, which resulted in allot of sand banks and both Madge and Green Bananas catching the bottom, Green Bananas with some what more of an effect as one of the crew members swung forward to check if the bow! Clive on A+E started out with one crew and was popping up and down on the foils two sail reaching, later in the day changing over to another crew where there popped the kite and starting to put some serious speed down in the relatively small area we were sailing in. Green Bananas enjoyed some long downwind runs towards itchenor sailing club but maybe didnt enjoy the short tacking up shallow tidal channel on the way back with a stream of gin palaces bearing down on them.

A good days sailing for all without any major breakages, sure Ive forgotten some details but another good day out at hisc.
Thanks
Greg

we managed a top speed of 13.8knts on one of the runs but that was not a long blast but more short gybing down the narrow channel.

we oddly enough are waxing the gybes with no issue with both exiting on the traps.  but tacking is seeming to be our issue at the moment. with multiply capsizes in the choppy channel.

but progress is being made tuning up the boat.

We also got chatting to a block called Guy who claims to have sailed madge back in 91/92 nationals and also some sailing on flat stanley. we have been getting lots and lots of 'they didn't like that when i sailed them' from club members.

Guy Lewington is a Cherub legend. Multiple nationals wins and the last Cherub to win the Bloody Mary.
His son Dylan is keen crew a cherub if anyone is looking for a south coast crew.

Andy Horsley is often down peering over the boats. He won the nationals in 1961 and 62.

Thanks to Nick for showing us where the bank was just before we hit it. Glad to hear that we do not have a banana split.

From where we were it definitely looked like Jo was pushed for her trip round the forestay.
