Paint reminders, please
« on: October 23, 2015, 10:25:18 PM »
Hi,

Looking for some basic paint reminders. I need primer, undercoat and top coat: on this page for eg, what do I need?

http://marinestore.co.uk/blakes-hempels-paints-and-undercoats.html

Underwater primer? Brilliant gloss (which says it's for topsides)? Multicoat?

Thanks!

Dinghies live out of the water, so what they call topside paint is just fine, the underwater stuff is just for boats that live in the water so its underwater all the time.

So most likely all you need is a tin of primer/undercoat and a tin of brilliant gloss.

The 2-part epoxy primer undercoat is very good. If you can get it in a colour you like, you won't even need a top coat.

I buy my paint from a car spray paint supplier - to be found in most industrial estates in the land :-)

Presumably this is for a wood boat. I don't think I'd fancy car paint for that.

When we resprayed blonde we used car paint and it looked good however it's really soft, so damaged really easy

Thanks all.

Yes, for a wooden boat. Also, any ideas on how much paint I'll need? I'm thinking 2-3 coats of undercoat and 3 of topcoat. 2 tins of each?

It depends... the paint companies recommend that as long as adhesion is good you don't strip everything off, but instead sand aggressively into the undercoat and get the majority of the top coat off and stop there. This makes perfect sense, and will save an awful lot of work in filling fairing and surface prep. If you do it like that you can probably get away with one tin of primer undercoat, but if she's back to bare wood then that probably won't be enough because you'll need more coats and more sanding. Top coat is really all about how good a finish you want and how many coats. Probably a tin and a half though...

Thanks, 2 pots of each it is.

Bottom of the hull is back to bare wood as half the paint was crap and at the time I didn't have a sander so hot air gun was the only way.
