Shiny's pole needs to grow another 40cm or so.

Adding to the outboard end I would say 200g woven then two to three 300g uni and a 200g top weave to finish.

and a bit extra where you sleave the two bits together

Make sure it's still retractable with 4m of the stern, Dave.

having made a new pole for dreams last week this rule suddenly caught my eye when i realised thanks to the daggerboard castle, it no longer retracts behind the snout, ohh well out with the jigsaw and fibreglass then...

The bow sprit only needs to retract to within 4300mm of the transom, check out the rules on the site

Matt,

How did your pole build go?  Did you do it all in one hit or save the final layer of weave for a second hit.

not sure, did it all in one go seemed to go ok.

finish is quite good although had a problem with the sock as it kept sticking in the wrong place and ended up with a few bubbles that had to be sanded down afterwards.  doesn't look like i'm going to get to test it till sunderland though so could be entertaining on the first hoist.  have to admit if i did it again wouldn't bother with the carbon sock would just do a layer of weave the full length and wrap it with parcel tape (inside out) as this left a stunning finish.  Think its a bit heavy ~ 1kg but with a bit of luck shouldn't bend too much but time shall tell.

sounds good.

My 3m pole came out at 1.6kg partly due to low consolidation.

parcel tape sticky side out is a good idea. glad it worked. good luck at Sunderland.

Quick question; what kind of bowsprit lengths are the norm on the latest boats? If anybody has an approximate transom to end of (extended) pole measurement that would be great.

We were working on 4.1m horizontal extension in front of the mast when extended.  Assuming about 0.4m stays in the boat and the mast is about 2m behind the snout we made a pole of 2.5m.  We used the thinner end of paul Crootes Mandrel.  The Mandrel will make a pole of 3m.  This came of the mandrel at a weight of 1kg.  It's about 1.15kg finished. much better conolidation than our first atempt.

Since all modern boats are trying to set a kite of the same or similar luff lengths and the mast height is fixed, the distance from the mast to the outer end of the pole is about the same.  As masts have crept back since 2005 the pole can become shorter.
To achieve the same dimension on Slippery we made a pole of 2.8m.
