Ronin
« on: May 24, 2014, 11:08:50 PM »
after a bit of playing with ronin we have decided its sails are looking a little tired so we may be looking at getting a new suit, and retire the current ones to blasting duties, we will either be going full Hyde or Hyde with a north kite, the latter is the setup she has at the moment. but the real question is what peoples opinions are on this?? the quotes have put the north kite at about 100-200 more so the question is out there given a price hike is there an appreciable improvement in the north kites??...

the other reason I'm posting this is i am also looking for an old spare mainsail for cutting down to make her more heavy weather friendly if anybody has one knocking around they aren't using that they want rid of, I can't really justify 600 quid on a new sail that i intend to use only for heavy weather flogging, I apologise if this is going to re-start the same line of thought that the post about reefing sails in the 18's that was put up here a while back but any thoughts on this are welcome

cheers
Alex

My first kite was a Hyde - great shape but quickly went soggy. Since then I have always used North, better shape and better cloth.

Of course all that spans 5 years, so things may have changed (for one North didn't used to be more expensive) - so my advice would be to check the cloth type they both use.

We changed to a north Kite when we had Ronin.  It was much more powerfull and easier to trim.

I have gone north on Madge (bit it 97 rules)  and am very happy with it.

and likely stated,  to run the reef well you need to run a very straight and stiff mast.  The 18's current crop of 2 rigs are very stiff and very straight so it works.  thats harder to do on the current cherub rigs about.

We have used Hydes since we had the boat with no apparent relative slowness compared to those using North.  We still use our 4 year old kite which has had heavy use, last out today but also used at this years inland's.

Have a look at P&B. they stiffened that mast up with a carbon track. They have the sail design for Ronin with that mast and carbon track.  The mast needs to have reverse bend at the bottom to get the right sail shape right, this is achieved with the lowers. The lowers should be on 1 and 1.5 on the lowers adjusters. I can't remember which side but it will be obvious if it is wrong. We have tried a P&B kite which was very good but are trialling a north on Cool Beans at the moment. Give me a call if you have any questions on set up.
