Self Tacker Cleats.

The self tacking jib arrangement on Banshee Ambulance is not really working out, almost to the point that the boat is unsailable. I was wondering if anyone has used a mast swivel type cleat and mounted it on the mast. Provided that you could cleat and uncleat from the rear of the boat I would have thought that would be as good a place as any to put it?

Where is it at the moment? I'm interested to know because I'll have to find a suitable place for the same item on 2658 when it comes to fitting out. (It used to be on the daggerboard case tunnel, which no longer exists!).

Strawberry has a flip/flop cleat like this at the bottom of the mast on the back of the foredeck:



It is mounted here:



This view shows the kingpost and is looking under the foredeck towards the bow. The cleat is attached to the special round carbon mount, which enables the control lines for things like the cunno and kicker to pass behind it.

I'd avoid putting it on the mast if it means re-rigging it every time you take the mast off.

On Numb the jib sheet runs down the cockpit floor and up through a swivel jammer in the middle of the cockpit - Exactly where you might expect the mainsheet jammer to be if there was one.

I like the setup - but I seem to be on my own there as ive not seen it elsewhere.

Ben's post describes the position of the current jib jammer on the Ambulance, sadly the fitting that is installed there does not work as the crew or helm can't pull it on when away from the center of the boat?  Replacing the fitting on the Ambulance with one that works/rotates would be the quickest fix. I think Riot has her jib in this same place on a turret.

EJ's jib is on the floor by the case and uses one of the large Allen swivel jammers, but the fitting is £50.

Another alternative for zero money for now would be to use one of the spare control lines that are lead up to the sides. A continuous system here could be easily accessed on each side, but personally I prefer to be able to adjust the jib whilst on the wire.

I think the one on Strawbs was a good place if the kicker is arranged so that it does not get in the way.

This is always a difficult decision.

We located ours on a short turret just in front of the centreboard case.  I can uncleat and cleat it from the back of the boat on or off of the trapeeze.  The crew can also reach it which is helpfull when launching or in light conditions. We used a spinlock cleat which has been reliable however the rivet that acts as a pivot has developed some play requiring a larger arm movement to cleat or un cleat.

We used to also have a port and starboard control line to give a fine tune.  This gave us a 4:1  which meant the crew could make a small adjustment from the wire.  The crew already had quite a high work load so we stopped using it.  This might work as a 2:1 purchase as long as you have pleanty of slack to allow the jib out for launching and capsize recovery.  The control must be led to the Helm though.

i built a turret on suicide blonde over the top of a coke can which was then glassed down to the floor behind the centreboard case seemed to work fine also end of the mainsheet was attched the the tail of the jib sheet

We also have a turret with a swivel cleat set at an angle on top.  Located just forward and to starboard of the centreboard case.  No fancy purchases just led through a block on the track end, down through a ratchet block on the deck and up to the cleat

I have one of the allen cleats unused (well one day) available.

Appart from the use of different makes of cleats I think most of the E5's use the same or a very similar jib system.  After we got rid of the fine tune ours was effectively a copy of Andy's.

It is where a mainsheet turret should be as I think the intention was to have it function as a mainsheet turret too. Unfortunately, it looks like the origional cleat has been replaced with one that does not swivel through any sort of angle so I am looking at other options.
