A bit radical but logical is to step the mast on an A frame/ quad-r-pod with the four legs on the gunnel and meeting together at the gooseneck.  This would effectively be 4 solid lowers of a larger diameter than we currently use with 2 legs replacing the lowers and two other legs going forward slightly. A standard curved track could then be mounted with the ends level with the mast and the centre behind the mast position.

problem over!

Pole problems over too.
I'm sure that idea will start a few other problems though.
