Caps adjustment system.
« on: January 31, 2016, 10:05:19 AM »
Apparently I need adjustable caps on shiny as the rowsel sail is set for the mast, and my dynamic isn't. Therefor I am thinking of adding an adjustment system (set and forget)

http://www.rssailing.org/photos/RS800/masttension.jpg
I found these systems on the 800 site, seems alright to me, but looking at pictures of 800's sailing, all the caps seem to swing to the windward side (understandable as its the tighter one) but I can't work out if there is any adverse affect on tension. Can someone advise on what is best to have/if te deflection in the system is a worry.

If someone can help me with this if be very greatful, or if you have a better system, I'd love to hear/see it.

why not just have the caps attached to a vernier on the chainplates.
then you can switch pins when the forestay tension is off.

If the caps are setup like you showed then as the adjuster moves to the side the tip of the mast falls to leeward. So you loose one of the benefits of having caps.
If you run the caps through an eye on the centerline of the mast before they get to the adjuster then you won't have this effect.

or run 2 to 1 pulley on each side before linking to a cascade tension on the mast pillar.

If the photo works

Will the d loop be sufficient for this, or does it need it be heigher up the mast?

Think adjustment system where my finger is, then running up the mast, through the the d loop then tied to the current caps wires.

That position would be OK if there is space for the adjuster below. The lines from each shroud need to join below the loop.

The way they are currently tied the caps will already be moving slightly on each tack.

One alternative would be to take the caps out to the shroud points. As they are not tensioned when rig tension is of it is easy to adjust them when you rig.

So, if I put in a loop above the eyelets in the caps, have a rope coming down to the adjustment system (like one in the 800 photos, all should be well in the land of mast bending?
Thanks

this is the setup i had on Madge.  Was powerful enough to adjust on the fly.  I would set it before i put the rig inthe boat (could have done it post that with two people)

the shackle had a rope loop around the mast that kept it central.  it's currently in a completely off state hence it's hitting the goose neck. when tight it was well clear.
