Shiny New Kite
« on: November 11, 2014, 11:00:37 PM »
I am wanting/yearning for a new kite for Shiny.
She currently has 3 kites
a black dynamic - a pain to hoist and drop but quick.
a green/blue red eye - i have had sewn back together by Pearson engineering thats ok to hoist/drop and on on pace
and a black Fyfe copy - REALLY nice to hoist and drop but HORRIBLE to sail with.

Options:

1. Act on the known and get a new redeye copy
2. Look at where patches are on fyfe, if any differnat to dynamic order modded dynamic
3.other/grow a pair

Any thoughts/advise please chip in.
Thanks
Jamie

Mike Lennon made us a fantastic new kite for the nationals.
They are actually assembled in the far east so are also a lot cheaper than anything made in this country.
Modern software and laser cutting means that sail making is no longer a black art.
A design can be adapted to fit a boat with different geometry by changing a couple of numbers whilst keeping the same flying shape.
The flying shape is also defined by a set of numbers. If you want a flatter kite or a wider one you change the number and the software does it for you.
It can place patches to optimize the packing in the sock or to whatever requirement you might have.
Trying to copy a tired stretched sail will not get you a good sail.

I have last years Hyde kite for sale if you are interested. Still in very good condition.

I would also throw Norths into the equation. They made us a great kite this year

Second that.  North mark very good kites.

Do consider treating your best kite. It can have a miraculous effect. Is it holmenkol? Not cheap but really works!

It is pretty cheap compared to a new kite but very hard to get hold of these days.
I tried it on the hull as well.
Water just fell off as did sponsor stickers and just about anything else however after a time it started to look very grubby.
I might regret it next time we try to re paint.

When the time comes to repaint remember to drop into a car paint shop an ask them for some silicone treatment...
...another nasty chemical, but after Usagi I'm a fan of it.
