Estimated cost to build a composite Cherub.
« on: January 05, 2013, 04:50:31 PM »
I am a Yank from Arizona thinking of building a Cherub. I would greatly appreciate an estimate of costs broken out by hull, riging and sails.
thank youo very much.

Cost is a difficult one to answer, the real question is how much you value your own time input, how much of the boat you looking to build and how many bits you are prepared to make badly whilst learning how to make the good one (personally still learning).

Both www.aardvarkracing.co.uk and Composite craft are well worth approaching to buy a kit of parts - shells, bars etc (Bloodeaxe as well, but there was a waiting list past Feb when asked before Christmas). The weight and box size to post to the US combined with the exchange rate will happily suprise you and is well worth considering!

If you are really keen to slave at it, I am  happy to share the CAD for the E6 jig/mould I am making - you will need to ask for it via Kevin Ellway (who can be PM'ed form this forum). Something like 23m2 of weave and 10m2 of 80kgpmc foam are needed for a hull.

Off the cuff materials for a mast/boom/prod/rigging as per the EJ build were about £350-500 all in. Boats in the fleet have Aardvark, Allen and C-tech rigs - prices are on thier web sites. All the layups we have used are shown in http://www.uk-cherub.org/doku.php/tech/3206build.

A popular sail loft in the UK fleet ATM is Dynamics Sails, from memory it is about £1600+Tax for a full set, but you may well find a local sail loft to make them - the joy of the Cherub fleet is not being tied to a supplier. The material cost for a home build set is about £500!

Hi Gregg,

Good advice from Roland there (AKA Born Slippy) - he knows a lot about building as he's on his third in five years, theres plenty of others around this forum too but it being January and about 5C things are a little quieter around here !

It would be great to have a boat stateside, you will find a lot of information on how to go about it on this site or if you need to know more just keep posting, we'd love to help. There is a guy called Doug who is building in Dubai (thread http://www.uk-cherub.org/forum/index.php/topic,493.0.html) with lots of photos.

Let us know your thinking and some more info about yourself (previous sailing experience, weight of you/potential crew etc) and the type of water you sail on. We'll help as much as we can, its a good plan, you wont regret it. Graham.

Hi Gregg and great to see interest in the class from the United States.

I know Roland well and can confirm that he is on his third build in 5 years.

I built an E5 Cherub 3 1/2 years ago.  I am a perfectionist and wanted to avoid the risk and time of getting things wrong a couple of times.  I decided to get a pro builder to mould the hull and deck and bought a C Tech mast.  I built the boom, bow sprit all the bulkheads, foils, racks and stuck it all together.

I found the advice and guidance of other cherub members very helpful.

There are a number of laminating and construction tricks and tips that members of this forum and the UK cherub class will be able to share with you.

The material cost for a home build set is about £500!
Stuberry points out that this was the price including recycling battens and ends from an old I14.

Off the cuff materials for a mast/boom/prod/rigging as per the EJ build were about £350-500 all in.
Stuberry further points out that the price of uni/weave has gone up about 40-50% since we made these and that the mast materials alone are now nearer £350-400.

Thank you all for your input. When I am up and running I will take some pics and show my progress, and undoubtedly be looking for some input.
Cheers Compadres! Gregg

Graham asked about my sailing history, I raced Scows in Minnesota, Butterfly's, M-16s and C boats. Spent a couple years sailing from Miami to New Zealand. I plan to use in mainly on inland lakes, occasional trip to California coast. I am about 75kg crews range from my 10 yr old boy 27kg, to friends to 100kg.
I will race it Phrf handicap probably vs a Fireball, Nacra 20s, Bimare cats etc. I would like to keep it around us$3000, plausible? Anyone know of a Phrf rating on the Cherub?
Btw, I have a good deal of computer knowledge, yet no CAD, is ir tough for a novice to use it?
Thank you Mates,
Gregg
