Snapped T foil.
« on: February 14, 2012, 06:07:43 PM »
Hi guys,

Went for a sail today and snapped the flap on the trailing edge of my T-foil... Pictures attached. I am hoping to repair it ASAP. Anybody got any ideas of how I would go about it and what I'd need?

I'm coming to the Valentines Blast on Friday morning and will be helping Graham_Bridle getting his boat sail-able. Would there be a chance to have some help from experienced people on Friday/sat eve repairing it? I can't really afford to send it off to get it repaired professionally.

I think your t foil is the only one in the fleet with a trim tab.

I can't see from the pics, but if it is possible to fix easily you will get help at the blast to sort it out,

If you want to fix it in time for the blast.....

............. then:

1) on the convex side of the break, sand the break flat so that when you pull the trim tab straight again you have about 8cm of chamfer.

2) Do the same or similar on the other side, if you can flex it so the other side is the convex side.

3) Splint it straight with wood/tape/clamps/vice/heavy things/etc. Take time over this.

4) put wetted out carbon (UD if available) cloth in the hollow you have just sanded out,.

5) Do the same on the other side.

How to repair the hinge I have no idea. Even exactly what happened to the trim tab isn't plain.

Be careful to keep resin out of the hinge.

If you are heading to Cooke's the best option is to ask him for some advice, we can then help implement it over the weekend.
