Strawb. Inc. would like to apologise for the late running of this service...
The UK Cherub National Champions 2010 will be held at Largo Bay SC from Wednesday 25th - Saturday 28th August.
Previous form has been to drive up early to race at the Largs Regatta and Round Cumbraes the weekend before hand, then drive East on the Monday.
sounds awesome
Great news, have booked it in the diary.
For those who have not been to Largo - my last visit was for under a 2 days in 1996. Both days sailing are still clearly imprinted behind my eyelids...
+1.
Largo 2006 was the nationals of nationals. It is a long way to go but it is so worth it.
Let me paint you a picture. You keep the boats on the sandy south facing beach which the clubhouse backs on to. There is plenty of rigging space. The sailing area is right off the beach so the racing can be watched from the shore. The water is fairly flat and the wind uninterrupted. There is little tidal stream. Edinburgh can be seen across the water, and the hills of Fyfe (sp) are behind. Off the water, many members live very nearby and gardens are available for camping. There are two pubs and we are asked to spread ourselves about a bit to avoid any bad feeling, but that's ok because they are across the road from each other. Evening entertainments included a ceildh (scottish dancing) and a visit from the Provost (mayor). The locals were very welcoming, especially to Stu Tinner, and we all went away thinking that this was the perfect nationals - and we want one just like that again please!
also... for the food fans out there. Last time they put on a finger buffet which was immense, then at the end of the week they stepped it up a notch and laid on a fork buffet. Many of us were unsure of what to expect but I can tell you that Hobbo (Stu's crew at the time) at his own body weight in sliced ham!
Oh... and also in the pubs they have Irn Bru on tap. Being able to order Vodka Irn Bru without being shouted at the pub is a wonderful experience.
We did some sailing too which was brilliant, wonderfully captured here... sailing well high above the mark to help the photographer take this excellent multi calendar featuring photo.

Hoping that you would be able to pull this one off. From all that I have heard it was an excellent event. I am very much looking forward to it. :)
If the dates agree well with the ent nationals we might be able to do both events next year. The Ents are across the forth at North Berwick. A better attempt than this year when I failed to do either.
I was at a meeting in the centre of Edinburgh today. On the way there, I paused next to the George IV statue. It's an amazing spot. Princes Street, Edinburgh Castle and the Scott Monument were behind me, and the grand architecture of George Street stretched out on either side. But looking north down Hanover Street there was a fantastic view out over Edinburgh, past the Leith docks and out to the sparkling blue water of the Forth Estuary. Clearly visible in the autumn sunshine, about 10 miles away in the distance, was the Fife coast, Largo Bay and the hills beyond. It's going to be a long 9-month wait!
Booked my annual leave today.
Accom already booked!
Leave booked , accom booked , boat ???
I've got too many boats but am sure I will be able to pick a favourite by then.
Anyone fancy meeting up on the way for some mountain biking between in the hills?!
Point of clarification please ....
The general concencus is to do Largs Regatta and Round Cumbraes prior to the nationals, are these on Sat 21 and Sun 22 August ?
Have I got that right, will there be a few boats on the Largs weekend ?
I am planning on doing the Largs regatta, then heading across to Largo I have taken the full week off so should be fun.
we have the same plan
we have the whole week off and plan to travel up on the friday before to largs , then on to Largo probably on Monday. Can't Wait :D
I plan to take 2 weeks off, and have the nationals as the second week. That way I can spend the first week making my way up to Scotland and stopping various places along the way and stretch my legs out on the mountain bike. Can't wait!
We will be taking the week off and are intending to go to Largs. Long drive on the Friday evening...
looking to go up for largs, not sure what day i will head up though.
A space on my doublestacker is avaible to anyone that wishes to take use of it/wants to share a lift up.
need to get my boat back into my hands and back on the water beforehand as not sailed at all since october :'(
Well this is a bit weird. Guess where the Australian Cherub fleet are having their Nationals in 2010? - Largs Bay Sailing Club!
.........in adelaide, AUS
Now that's a long drive...
OK guys, we've had to make a bit of a change of plan. Largs SC, who hold the Largs Regatta and round Cumbraes, have changed the date to the week after. So it now clashes with the Nationals.
I'm really sorry to those who had planned to do the regatta the previous weekend.
This means that we have had to re-schedule the Northern leg of the Travellers Trophy. This will now be held at Kielder SC on 1st and 2nd May.
OK guys, things are changing very quickly...
Kielder will not be the Northern traveller event.
The Northern traveller will be held at Sunderland YC on 21st and 22nd August, the weekend before the Nationals begin.
That sounds like a good plan. It will break the journey on the way up. Looking forward to it!
what about the round cumbrae race or is that different date?
The Round Cumbrae race is on the Sunday after the Nationals i.e. 29 Aug the next day.
We are planning on heading across and doing it.
Sunderland sounds good Stu.
i may or may not be able to make sunderland depending how knackered i am after holiday in minorca sailing
Can someone tell me what the process is for entering. thanks
Hi Chris, we are just finalising the details for the nationals regarding cost etc and hope to have an entry form available in the next couple of weeks. Once online you will be able to pay by cheque or via an online payment.
Which boat will you be bringing?
Antidote to panel games
Excellent!
We will no doubt speak to you at Whitstable and may be able to update you on the nationals plan then.

Can Will/Lucy not make it this year?
I have bought the boat but Will may be crewing if my regular crew can't make it
:O
Roland and Hayley have lent us born slippy in 97 rules mode which we are sailing together today. The idea is for Lucy to steer because the gestation situation and harnesses are no longer compatible!
The week of the nationals will be the start of maternity leave! We will both be there.
Congratulations Lucy and Will :) You'll have a little Cherub! Best Wishes, Sarah and Phil
Best wishes indeed
Yes, Congratulations.
That's exciting news! All the best to you both.
We're expecting daughter No. 5 in about 4 weeks. It might put a spanner in the works in terms of my plan to get to the Nationals with daughter No.1, but we'll see nearer the time.
Wow! Five!
W
Would be great if you can make it Neil. My girlfriend Kate and my Dad are looking to take along 2303 so would be nice if there were some other old boats, if only for a couple of days.
Just had a look on google maps and it's about 308 miles and 5h20ms (not taking into accout slower speeds with towing the boat) so at least i can make it on one tankful, thanks to the new Team Slippery mobile hotel, all i need now is a crew!
Cool! Sww is a v well known boat . I don't see you having a problem finding a crew!
I was hoping i wouldn't but it doesn't have to be a crew i don't mind crewing if someone wants to helm. Just need to get some practice in but we are having severe water level difficulties at the moment which makes the pond i sail on into a puddle "ask Hoppy, he and Debbie did our inaurarul N12 open a couple of months ago!)
It appears that Largo is also lookingforward to us arriving - they've even added a button on thier home page for us....
http://www.largobaysc.org.uk/cherubNats%202010.html (http://www.largobaysc.org.uk/cherubNats%202010.html)
I can't wait for the week away :-)
Stu!
You are famous again.
I'm glad you are planning to bring slippery up it will be good to see her again.
Should i have paid an entry fee to anyine yet
I believe that Stu spoke to Largo Bay SC last night confirming everything, they had a meeting about the nationals on monday night so we have been awaiting details up to this point. There will be an update reference entry asap.
The nationals schedule is shaping up something like this:-
Wednesday 25th: Races 1 & 2, Commodores reception and finger buffet in the Crusoe
Thursday 26th: Races 3, 4 & 5, AGM in the Crusoe, Quiz in the Railway
Friday 27th: Races 6, 7 & 8, BBQ at the club after straight after racing
Saturday 28th: Races 9 & 10, Prize giving in the Crusoe followed by a fork buffet
The NOR will be up on the Largo Bay SC website over the weekend, and entry will open in the early part of next week.
Sounds like it is going to be fun, if anyone is interested the Flying Kipper is sitting in my garage not too far from the event it is available for use at the Nationals if anyone is interested PM me for details.
If anyone was still unconvinced as to how good a place to sail largo is..

IS there something we should Know! ;D
Luckily for you Ben, we don't have any races on Sunday so this doesn't affect us! This looks like it was some of their own in house fun!
Have you not seen the film "The Wicker Man?"
sailing without a harness on the boat could be difficult.
I am not sure that Nick's first experience of a british nationals should be anything like that.
Not until he gets his own boat anyway.
so how do we enter????
Steady! This is a family show!
is htere a NOR, SIs, etc... yet???
Is there an entry form anywhere and how much do the nationals cost? Dave
The club assures me the NOR will be available this week.
suicide Blonde should be attendeing, if all plans come together possibility for a option to tow another boat up for you,
see you soon
The NOR is out!
http://www.largobaysc.org.uk/Cherub%20Notice%20of%20Race.html
Excellent work... all we need now is an entry form! This should be available in a day or so. We should be sorting out online entry which can be paid by card or paypal. (that's right... even if you dont think you can afford it, there is time to put it on the credit card so no excuse is valid! ;-) )
The £120 entry fee provides excellent value for money as Largo will be providing food and entertainment on most nights. (those who went last time will remember the excellent finger and fork buffets which gave us strength when the wind was blowing!)
Good to hear that Suicide will be attending.
I wondered who do I ask to measure a new spinnaker for me at the nationals?
chris
Tom to do the official reading the numbers, and me to hold the other end of the tape measure!
Do we need to bring measurement certificates and proof of insurance and things like that not having done a nationals before wasn't sure?
Tom as discussed briefly at Thornbury, could I ask you to measure and weigh what you can of E-numbers at the nationals at a time that is convenient to you. I realise that the measurement sticks are difficult to transport so I will make a future apointment to bring the boat to southampton for you to measure.
Egbert,
It would be prudent to bring Insurance and measurement certificates but In my experience I was never asked to declare a measurement cert for slippery.
Another topic for discussion at the AGM could be should certificates be reissued when a boat changes hand so that it has the correct owners name on the certificate.
Don't worry too hard about the measurement cert. Tom has a list and will re-weigh/measure you if suspicious (he is bringing the sticks and scales).
As for insurance - if you can't find the paperwork then most good companies can email you a copy.
Eleanor will also need to be measured at some point. But we will try to weigh at home and add any appropriate lead, and our sails are old so have already been done.
For most champs you sign a declaration of having third party and that is enough. I dont think I have shown an insurance cert since I sailed a mirror in the late 1970's
Oh and Will I hope you have the measurement sert
chris
does any one have a 2005 rules spare 2 patch kite i can borrow for suicide blonde
Our accomidation is from Sat to Sat which meens we are homeless for the final night.
Does anybody have some room at the inn. Otherwise we may need three wise men, probably at short supply in the Cherub class.
A request for stable accomodation?
Ross and I are taking the chateau. We will have space.
On the subject of accomodation, free camping is available in the sailing club member's gardens. However, you MUST contact me so I can give the club an idea of numbers.
Stu - Put me down for a camping spot please

Dave,
I expect you will have tried this anyway, our accom was the same but I phoned up the letting company and they arranged one extra night. We have floor space in the lounge available but all beds are taken.......
Floor space may be good Andy.
Will anyone have about 10m of vectran or the like and 10m of excel (or the like) that I can buy from them at the nationals ?
I have some SK75 4mm Graham. This is the unsheathed type that you can splice to make cascades etc. Not as stiff as vectran so may not be suitable for what you want to do.
I had the opportunity to visit Largo yesterday afternoon after sorting out all the work related things.
It looks lovely.
Everything is compact and close together. if you are camping in one of the offered gardens you will be within 50 yards of the club and 10 yards of the beach. I spoke to a passer by that I was coming up to the nationals there next week and she imeadiately found one of the club officials who lives next door to the club. He explained everything. He will be putting up signs leading you into Lower Largo.
Boats will be stored at the top of the beach, cars can be parked in the free carpark 100 yards beyond the club. They will mark the safe launching/landing area with flags.
The sailing area looks ideal.
Really looking forward to the event now.
have the SI.s been finalised? I did not enqire about these knowing that Stu has been doing a lot of liasing with the club.
Thanks Phil, Roland also has some so I wont risk a postal order now.
Good report on the venue, all we need is some weather ......
Sunny, force 3 or 4 please
Could you put me down for a camping spot too please
i have a space on the double stacker with suicde Blonde if anyone want me to take a boat up shout
I heard via the Unerman this evening that the Kirks have been involved in a car prang, unfortunately ending up with e-numbers being shunted into the back of the car!!!!!!
I hope Phil and Sarah are both ok, and if the boat can be rescued I guess you'll all chip in to get them back on the water.
Phil & Sarah, I wish you well and hope you can get it all sorted.
Paul
Well i made it home in one piece almost (minor Gantry damage) and a dented pride but after the epic blasting yesterday i'm still smileing if not a little tired but thats what you get from setting off at 3:45! hope everone else makes it back ok and a big hankyou to everyone for a fantastic first nationals experiance.
We're really glad you enjoyed the experience Egbert. Sarah and I were gratefull for the opportunity to crew for you as it took our minds off talking to various insurance companies and enabled us to take part in the event.
The collision last Sunday showed how strong the boat is. Although several areas of significant damage are visable it must be remembered that a fiesta moving at 20-30 mph takes a bit of stopping. The force that was transmitted in to the car via the boat were obviously olso high. Photos attached.
E-number's sorry tale continues. Team suicide blonde kindly took E-numbers south. On route and after having diverted to see the Falkirk Wheel their trailor was hit and damaged by a car coming the other way. The van and team were ok as were both E-numbers and Suicide Blonde. Unfortunately the trailer has been damaged and can not be towed. This is due to be relayed south with the boats after the bank holiday.
So we have concluded the E-numbers attracts cars or doesn't like Scotland.
We may have miss-named our boat and are wondering if she should have been called Fatal Attraction!
Ok Team Suicide has arrived back on station at last!!!!!
after spending 4hrs wasting time with a drunken idiot who managed to pre empt his arest with the police,
amazing what damage one boat can cause E-Numbers you are Jinxed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
as said above van and crew, plus boats all sound and ok trailer needs some work to sort out.
photo's will follow.
Thanks all for your support today ::)
Keep smiling Phil and Sarah :D
Another epic nationals from the Largo Bay team. There must be some really superb pictures out there of Saturday!
Sad to hear of more road based issues on the way home, I hope everyone else got home safely, it was an epic journey after such a good week.
I too wondered where we can see the photos that the guy in th rescue boat took, does anyone know ?
On a personal plea, Ediie left his (expensive) longboard in the Crusoe saturtday night, and no sign of it Sunday morning, any kind person know anything of its whereabouts now ?
An excellent nationals, thanks to everyone that made it so. Onwards to number 60.
http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/news/?article=153618
Some pics in the gallery.
Thanks to all in the class for the efforts that they put in to organise the nationals. We had a great time and enjoyed the racing a great deal. I think LBSC put on a great event. I would like a curry house to be opened before I return to the area again because I missed spicey food but other than that I felt it was a full of friendly locals and good food in the pubs/hotels that were available.
In short great boat, great races and friendly class members. Oh and Graham Bridle is now the president! What more could a class want.
A few more picks now on the final day report page, including some that Alasdair Sneddon kindly sent me
Phil
A visit to Andy P today led to the conclusion that E-numbers will live. Despite the gashes in the hull close to the main bulkheads the main bulkheads are untouched and sound. Slight caveate that the mid bulkhead hasn't been seen yet but will be checked when doing the port chine repair. It does appear that we built a solid boat. Still convinced that she doesn't like Scotland though!
The best part of this is we should have her back sailing earlier than if she was a right off.
Thats good news
How cool is that!
E numbers 2 Cars 0
The Andy P Shell combined with Kirk attention to detail is clearly a winning combination.
I thought 4 out of the top 5 boats for Andy was good at this year's Nationals but creating a pheonix is very impressive.
So does that make you the favorites for next year?
I'll ring later
Excellent news guys, you must be really pleased. Can't wait to see you racing her again.
well thank god for that :D
I've split this topic up and moved the insurance related part into the tech chat board. Let's keep this for on and off the water banter :-D
