What's the general consensus on places to stay? Do the sailing club have a patch of grass for tents? I might give them a call and see what they usually recommend. There seem to be very few campsites nearby and the prospect of a b&b for the week is a bit rich.

The roof of a Transit van was my choice last time, had a good view over the sea so could tell if there was enough wind to get up.

I've already bagsied the back of the 110.

Nice one Joe.

Now I just need to work out how to squeeze a bathroom and decent size bed in.

Google Earth reveals  several within about 5 miles. I hope there are not restrictions on tent sizes...

I will more than likely be staying in Chateau de Noyce but if there is camping on site then I might just stay there to save my fuel! As the races are in the afternoon I might work in the mornings and just turn up in time to sail as I am sure Alex will be more than happy to do all the rigging and bimbling by himself?!  ::)

Google Earth also reveals a big green field about 200 meters away. It might be time to implement operation'Micra transformer hotel'.

That big green field is a golf course and a cliff face according to the map.. and at least one of the nearby potential campsites turned out to be a cemetary on closer inspection. I don't think you're eligible for their accommodation if you're able to go sailing...

Re accommodation: I spoke yesterday with a lovely lady called Viv at BBSC who gave me 3 numbers for B&B's - all have availability and all are walkable from the club. Thought I'd pass them on, tarriffs seem to be about £25-£35 pn with discount for tiny crews.

Thanks for posting that Graham. I visited the club at the weekend and it is in a very cool location. I will post some pics to wet everyones appetite later. I am trying to organise cheap camping at the local scout campsite (about a mile away) as a budget accomodation option. Otherwise I think it is going to be a case of B&B's or hotels (of which there are plenty) I'll post an update as soon as we have something concrete (or grass as it might be).

Ok, I have been forwarded this from BCSC as another possibility for accomodation.

"Thanks for thinking about us, at present we have 7 rooms vacant 4 Doubles, 1 Twin, 1 Family 3, and 1 Family 4.

All our rooms have been recently refurbished to include new comfortable beds and all have Digital flatscreen TVs with freeview, Hair driers, hospitality trays and complimentary toiletries.

As you know we are only about 100 metres from the sailing club and the cliff railway we  couldn't be better placed and as for our full English Breakfast you could"nt wish for a better start for a day on the water.

Our web site is www.babbacombepalms.com  If you would like to forward this e-mail to Cherub Association I would appreciate it.

Kind Regards

We total 127Kg, lets just say a good proportion of it is at the back !

We find we twin comfortably in probably  8-10kts of breeze, which is optimum weather, as we practice we're finding technique makes the weight generally less important, although i am not sure that with that sort of weight anything will save us in 20kts.

Campsite found

I put in a few calls and checked out a local Scout Campsite. They were happy to have us but due to there being kids on site everyone over the age of 18 would have to be CRB checked. They told me about they’re friends privately owned campsite and it looks ideal.

www.manorfarmcows.com

Location

A cow farm which has set aside a field for camping and caravanning. Looks nice on the website! A 10 minute drive from the club. Two pubs within walking distance. One with v.good food in a 'rural' setting, the other more of a high street pub.

Rates
per night

13 for a tent as big as you like
9 for smaller tent

I have a 12 man canvas palace along with a couple more if I can get my blagging socks on and they're needed. I'll try and get a mess tent for kit drying/ socialising etc. Space in currently available however, not at my expense. A couple of quid a night buys the privilege to kip in Chateau Burkin without the worry of having to deal with the beast (or any tent) when you get home.

Alternative currency includes; Beer, Carbon, Epoxy or lift back from the pub.

Basic facilities on site only include a shower and toilet block and a small shop selling “drinks and sweets and stuff”. Space is currently available but the quicker we book the better. BBQs are welcomed (and provided!) but no open fires unfortunately.

I'll be there for a day or two before racing starts.

Ross, this is great. Thanks for finding this. I can confirm that Ross's canvas Palace really is a great way to spend a nationals having had a room in their last year! £13 a tent per night sleeping 12 people works out at just over a quid a night for accomodation... not sure that can be sniffed at really!

I'd like to book a room please Ross. You can probably have payment in stirling and beer!

Just depending on if when I pick my boat up this week, it is actually how it should be. And we actually get the boat wet before hand, me and the littlen' may come down for a couple of days. It depends on how well 'mighty mouse' copes with his first experiences of the 'Wailing Irish Witch.' So it would be good to know what the damage is so I can do a Credit Crunch analysis.

pizza and bbq night at the local pub with scenic views on friday night,
prize giving on the beach after racing on saturday.

Also included in the price is the 2009 UK Cherub Nationals T-shirt for each crew member, a DVD of photos and videos taken by Fotoboat at the event and the opportunity to win some Allen Brothers goodie bags!

Bargain or what?!  ;D

That is a price per boat (2 people). I will update the website with the entry form, SI and NOR asap. Payment will be via cheque or paypal for which there will be a link posted on the website.

Sorry all the info is not there right now but keep your eyes peeled as it will be up in the next day or so, I just thought it was best to get all the details out in the open as soon as I could.

My Photoshop skills are exemplary but maybe not that good  ;D.

Yes it is true that there are a few days left to get her ready for the Champs, but dumping a 30kg 12 year old* in at the deep end may not be the way to achieve the best  long term Father / Son sailing relationship. Which could rather destroy the intended purpose of the boat in the first place.

Also 2 weeks could turn in to 2 months! You are never quite sure with any boat builder  :D

Suppose nows a good time to say hi. Finally made it to the forum.

Reason is yesturday i was down in Exeter for hols and visited Babbacombe for a day trip.
Firstly the pro's:
Its lovely clear water, warm too. Beautiful area. The wind was above 15 mph for the whole of the week i was in Devon and was in the 30's yday.
Cons:
The club house is in the middle of town. A 5minute drive from the sea. To get there its down a steep winding road. At the shore there is a hut like a 2 story caraven. (Size wise)
The only other building is a cafe not related to the club.
I have no idea where they will store boats as the boat park it about 10 by 4 metres and already full of plastics ie picos.
Its in a small  bay in which when i was there  the wind went in every direction, no joke but once your out in the open it looks quite nice.

For those thinking who the hells this guy its Ross's illusive crew. I should be there this summer depending on what ross sorts out.
Thats pretty much it.

Having sailed there the sailing area is a peach and the club is very friendly. I agree it will make for friendly boat storage - I think a bit of boatpark rafting may be the order of the week - guessing it is also a  good reason for us all getting the entries in early so the club can prepare for the number of boats!

Last week we sailed at Whitstable and on monday we managed to tear the T/foil off the back pin/gudgeons the lot, in true cherub style we hot footed it back home slapped on some carbon and went racing on tuesday. On wednesday in an awesome force 6 we did the same only this time we also nearly ripped apart the foil as well. That pretty much ended our weeks pre nationals sailing, on a plus point the old suit of Redeyes that we had cut down, work a treat when it's blowing dogs off chains. Just before the rudder gave up for the second time we were rapidly overhauling a 505 on a two sail reach. A big grin followed by a big crack. Lets hope this new repair is better than the last.

"we were rapidly overhauling a 505 on a two sail reach"

I had an excellent battle with a 505 on a nice 2 sail reach at FED week a few years ago in the old bistro. He started a way out in front, then we twin wired over the top of him to his disgust... to be even more put out when the beam reach turned to a broad reach when we hoisted and REALLY left him behind! This was across the full width of Chichester harbour, with a nice lengthy broad reach down towards Itchenor. Brilliant fun!  ;D

Lets hope this new repair is better than the last.
Dn't forget that epoxy laminates need time to get up to full strength. Temperature makes a big difference to the amount of time, but the longer the better... ( well up to a week anyway). Overnight use repairs need to be cooked throughly and overbuilt!

The camp site is almost full. I highly recommend booking ASAP.
The Welsh, Space Cadet and I are booked.

Completely spanking sailing all 3 days so far.

Day 1: Sunny and windy with crazy squergles at the windward mark that could really tip you in. Plenty of twinning and good tactical stuff: in under the cliffs and risk the mad lulls, or out into the pressure but risk the headers.

Day 2: Very warm and sunny, with no wind at all. Held on shore by the wise and patient race committee. The wind filled in beautifully, clocking round to the west steadily giving completely superb sailing for 3 races, then a rather lite & sh*te 1 lapper to finish and struggling home in the failing breeze.

Day 3: No sunshine, and breeze looked crap from the beach. The news from the race boat was 'there's plenty of breeze out here, get off the beach you lazy shower!' They were right. Plenty to twin up and down wind, with the wind backing steadily for the first 2 races then veering suddenly in the middle of race 3, making it a bit of a drag race. Final race was lighter and shiftier but still good stuff.

Interim results:

Pete & Roz (Ronin): 11111111111
Will and Lucy (Antidote to Panel Games): 2 2 2 2 3 2 5 2 2 2 2
Paul & Chris (Atum Bom)3rd:very fast in the heavy stuff
Andy & Jill (Ousagi Yobimbo) 4th: Very fast in the light stuff
Graham & Eddie (Riot Van)
Dean & Simon (Loco Perro)
All to play for further down the fleet.......

Another 3 races tomorrow.

Babbacombe Corinthian Sailing Club hosted the Allen 2009 Cherub Nationals from 12th-15th August. BCSC is based at Oddicombe Beach just north of Torbay, and Cherubs shared the beach with weather-dependent families on their annual holidays to the English Riviera.

....to be continued....

A truly memorable nationals this year. A huge thanks to B.C.S.C who made us all feel very welcome, an outstanding effort by all their members. With a wide range of wind strengths there was something for everyone and racing was extremely close . Starts were spot on  also , there was even a general recall.
Thanks to all envolved in sorting this out, and if you missed this year ,make sure you make it to Largo in 2010 even if you have to catch swine flu for the week ;)

Title: Re: UK Cherub National Championship 2009 - 12 - 15th August
Post by: Will_Lee on August 17, 2009, 01:54:58 PM
Pete n Roz won every race but one.
Lucy and I were second in most, but won one (a step forward from last year)
Paul and Chris in Atum were third.

The whole field is closer than ever, and many place changes occurred even on the last race.

An epic nationals. A complete series with really good cherub weather throughout. The last day was the windiest, probably 20kn+ in the gusts. not Uber windy but enough to get air. Close racing, excellent race organisation, great socials.

No sign of any official results, but I am sure they will be along soon.

Team Stanley brought up the rear in 14th place! Given our boat was probably the oldest by 15 years thats not bad.

I'm sure I asked most people so sorry to repeat myself, but my main and jib hyde sailbags went walkies on the last day which is a major pain in d'ass.

If you could have a look if they got mixed up with all the yellow bags that were around, i'd be grateful. Mine were hanging on the railings of the launching ramp, and were not marked in any way, yes I know stupid stupid stupid.

No hyde sail bags, sorry Graham.

But we did manage to rescue a forgotten set of Caws (prob '97 rules). We thought they were Strangely Brown, but Little T thinks they might be Monkey's.

Any takers?

The Caws could be Sgt. Murphy's ex suicide set?
Bruce brought them down for the strangelys. Funny enough but Sgt may well be needing them again after the camel trading we are currently doing.

That was a few hours of work time put to one side to write it! Tried to include everyone, so hope no one is disappointed. My memory from the week was a bit blurred as I had so much on all week, I just remembered that I really enjoyed it!

My memory from the week was a bit blurred as I had so much on all week,
Good work: I could never manage any kind of half decent write up after I had left the venue. I used to wander round the bar early in the evening with a pint in one hand and a voice activated tape recorder in the other and ask every crew for notable incidents/events/disasters and then write up a few paragraphs each evening. Nothing else worked for me! Sadly my veteran-of-at-least-5-champs-reports laptop died last month with a keyboard problem...

Hmmmm, luckily I have a pretty good photographic memory so I can remember events pretty much as and when they happened... ask me to learn lines of a script or music lyrics on the other hand and I'm completely lost!

I had intended to go round and ask people for input on a daily basis (as the Osprey report on Y&Y) but sadly didn't find time. Maybe next year!  ::)

Oh, and for the record, my memory wasn't blurred by alcohol just lots of driving, organising and incredible sailing!

Really goes to show how pointy the new boats are... and that there are still some exciting paint jobs in the fleet!

The fotoboat shots from the nationals are available to view at www.fotoboat.com there are some really great shots there.

Every boat from the nationals will be eligable to receive a DVD with all of these images in high res as this was included in your entry  ;D.

To aid me getting these to you please could you send me a personal message with your postal address and I can get them over to you as soon as I can. (I've not got them yet but am promised them soon!) Or, if preferred people attending Lymington can pick yours up there to save me some postage money!
