Title: Whitstable files
Post by: Will_Lee on October 20, 2008, 03:39:06 PM

Yesterday's sailing at Whitstable was awesome. I'm still laughing as I walk along corridors here at work and feeing fab.

It was pretty pokey when we set off from the beach: SWly up to 20 knots I should think. Race officer tough nut and hard man Rick Perkins set a non-shortenable 5 lapper windward leeward course a little way off the beach. It was wind against tide with big waves by the bottom mark but strange calmness by the windward mark. The effect of this was jumping and flying faster and faster towards the bottom mark, and really having to choose your spot to drop, within 100m either way of the buoy being better than a swim. One lap we dropped on  the wrong gybe, but the sea state was so confused by the wind, tide and reflected waves from the wall that we grannied round rather than gybing.

After five laps of airtime upwind and down, and one tack related swim, we finished the race ahead of the musto skiff and were thoroughly  knackered. Mindful of the extreme shallowness we pulled up the foils and jumped too early and I had to deliver a few breaststroke legs strokes whlie holding a wingbar to bring the boat in to the shore before we piled up on a groyne.

Once we were ashore we realised how windy it was: Very windy!

I'm jealous, very jealous! I wanted to go sailing yesterday but I can't move my boat from my driveway :(. If I had gone sailing I wouldn't have been invited to jam at some blues/jazz club in Soho tonight  :o

Edit

I hope there wasn't negative T-foil in play!

:( I was race officer for Frampton's laser open.  We had 28 boats and just enough wind to make it challenging but not enough to scare people.

Sarah and I are running the racing for the Gloucester school's regatta on saturday and meeting the folks on Sunday.

Wind could be pokey again. So hang on at Whistable!

We'll do our best!

I am spending Sunday sorting out the T foil system. If anyone wants to come round and distract me they are v welcome. Twisty grip plus coarse rope adj. Also stronger tiller and a few jobettes to do around the boat. Might relead teh kicker to reduce boom centreage which was a bit of a problem on Sunday.

Dean and I were assistant race officers last sunday. We sat in the race box and watched the the Lee's start three minuites late, then romp through the field to destroy the opposition and our nice little 930 PY . Well done guys you did us proud. Hopefully we can do the same on Sunday!

Yesterday was a 16 knot forecast but when we arried there was nowt.

At the start it was possibly 10knots sswly with a foul tide. It was the last race of the autumn series. We were leading, on equal points with Sergei the MPS sailor. We were lucky enough to have Graham and Eddie in the Platypus named Scumbag sailing as our guests. The race officer was Simon Reynolds who set a committee boat start a fair way off the shore.

Scumbag and Antidote started at the left and headed left with a 29er, but the MPS's took the boat end though they headed left out of the tide. The MPS's looked good to begin with Sergei pointing well, and when we (Antidote) tacked back we crossed just behind. He continued lefter, but we'd tacked out because of patchy breeze. We had a good leg to near the stbd layline and tacked back clear ahead.

We gybed immediately after hoisting and piled out into the favourable stream and Sergei followed. Far from the air-mixing effects of the many cats, Merlins and Wanderers we were able to make the jump to lightspeed. We gybed back early to ensure we didn't overshoot (more problematic when approaching on stbd). I am glad we did because extra pressure curved us nearly down to the buoy.

The next few laps were characterised by us tipping it in on a tack and having to catch up and pass Sergei again, a late hoist because advanced cat-dodging was required, and a steady increase in the breeze. At about this time Scumbags jib tack came loose and the quickly popped ashore mid race to sort it out: Top effort. I think we should have a prize at opens for the person who shows the most grit - and the Scumbags won it yesterday, no doubt.

Finally, in quite a lot of wind, and immediately after completely stopping on the beat to allow a stbd tack cat to go by we finished. We went for our obligatory burn (18.6 knots max and huge amounts of air) and headed in. Half way there the mainsheet snapped and we did the first ears-first double teabag we've done in a long time.

Sadly the locoists are sailing today but we can't make it due to mrsdrlee being at work!

It would seem that the Locoists and the Antidotes will miss each other this weekend as well. I believe the Antidotes are in Devon! Still lets pray for 15 knots and some sunshine for all. Are Graeme and Eddie considering a more permanent stay at Witstable? Could this be the begining of a fleet?

If I said there was no wind that would be an understatement!! However this weekend should be good as we can't sail due to work. Had an interesting chat with Si Reynolds though about maybe tagging a Cherub event onto the Musto Skiffs open?

We will be there on the 16th. The Cherubs even got a mention in the club news letter, and several people have asked about ideal crew weights. We all know wieght is less important than a desire to go downhill in the fastest way possible. So maybe we will find some converts at the club.

This weekend we plan to be there, but probably not to sail as Lucy is v ill and on call tomorrow. The 16th is the day after two of my friends (both named Jo!) are getting married. We plan to be there!

This is not the first name matched wedding I have been to - Sam and Sam Kyeremetang were hitched not so long ago!

Nice to see some interest in this thread, justly deserved, we had a first class blast at Whitstable a few weeks ago, cant praise the clubs attitude highly enough and it has good launching facilities, and excellent stretch of salty water and an excellent bar.  40 minutes from the M25 and about the same from Le tunnel sous la Manche; quite well located for anyone eastish too.

Were we to be lucky enough to be invited on the 16th, whats the start time, anyone know ?

No problem - great to have everyone there.

(Stu and Neal were signed in by us (risky!) and Graham and Eddie were signed in by the Locoists)

Racing report:

Rain, not much wind, and poor visibility greeted us at Whitstable on Sun 16th Nove 2008. However it soon cleared up and a Northerly force 3 set in. The start was an all-in handicap affair with tornados and mirors sharing the line with 4 cherubs and a similar number of Musto Skiffs and a 29er.

It was a running start with a foul tide inshore and a fair tide offshore. Cherubs went for hanging back and then engaging the warp drive. At the bottom this tactic had worked as in front of Antidote were one musto skiff and two cats only, with the assembled multitudes of all sorts behind busy being slowed down by each other. Loco tipped it in while dodging a Laser 2000 (if your are reading this, L2000 sailors, they are v sorry), and two mustos acheived synchonised swimmability on the gybe. Suicide also swam on this leg but I don't know the details.

There was then a beat with decisions to make: Offshore for worse sea but more breeze or inshore among the windjammers (cats) with windbends around the shore too (possibly). We chose to stick reasonably close to Simon Reynolds as he knows his onions. Another stbd rounding onto a short white-water-reach to a bear-away buoy at the top of the run again completed the lap. There were 3 or four laps-  I don't remember, sorry!

Each lap the breeze would go down a bit, but Antidote would act with honours, pointing a bit lower but outpacing the Musto uphill and downhill going about the same speed but doing a lower angle in the fading breeze. The first white water reach (two sail reach) was seriously fast, the second one had moments of fastness, but the next one was when Simon cruised by to leeward, his longer hull and singlehander's lighter displacement carrying him fast past us. We didn't catch him again despite our best efforts.

Loco and Scumbag had an excellent battle all round the course with Loco coming out on top in the end. Suicide got round but I know no more.

Getting ashore after our post race blast in less wind (good) but more shoredump (bad) was a real study in how friendly the sailors at Whitstable are: As we wobbled, boardless and almost rudderless between the groynes we were met by two Musto sailors, one of whom we had never even met before, and the Locoists who caught the boat and (get this) gave us a hand lifting the boat out. We returned the favour by catching the Mustos as they came in. They were even accepting of us carrying their boats and putting them some of them on the wrong trolleys (sorry).

This is a very friendly club - and a very cherub friendly club too. This is a good thing because when I looked up I noticed there were tipped over cherubs filling the beach space in our groyne area, with Musto Skiff sailors pulling their boats through the gaps or derigging as if Cherubs were the most natural thing to find tipped over on the beach at your club.

After this it was packing up before the sun went down and before we all became human-icicle hybrids.

In the bar Simon Reynolds gave us a really useful debrief about each leg of the course - much appreciated!

It was great to have you guys down this weekend , as you said Neil " four cherubs almost an open meeting".
it was good to show what Whitstable Y C has to offer, even if the gods of weather didn't really smile on us. We enjoyed a close race with Scumbag only sneaking a narrow margin on the last lap, hope to see you again soon. Ross you were missed, maybe next time?

Today was windy and cold and damp with variably lumpy water - and really excellent!

Course was set from the shore, a skew whiff fetch and two-sail reach for an hour an a half. We didn't use the kite all day. Small wipeout at the leeward mark caused a certain amount of banter for me: It went like this - ask me a question about foil sections or something.... wait until I am a little way into the answer... then say "I don't understand that at all, but it's ok because YOU fell in today!"

Extra marks to the Merlin named 'Brazilian' (stop sniggering) which tipped it in bigstyle because of a tiller extension parting company, but came up smiling.

Special mention to the 29er with a borrowed helm which went out and wiped out monstrously and then came straight in: There is no shame at all in getting a battering.

Man of the match goes the Musto Skiffist who came in after getting a battering early on, but waited in his kit on the beach to give us a hand getting ashore through the breakers. If you are reading this, very many thanks!

Today was completely freezing and excellent at Whitstable: We arrived in time for the 11am start to find no water and no wind...... and that the start was really at 2pm!

Having atoned for the early start by getting mrsdrlee more coffee and met the Locists (and their T foil with its angle changed at the Sticky Weekend) at Elliots Cafe, we then rigged and hit the water.

There was some wind from NE and plenty of mostly flat water to burn around in, so that's what we did. The wind and waves got up to bidirectional twinnability level for most of the time during the racing though).

The course was a skew-wiff triangle with an incredibly short beat to begin, and a fair tide for good measure. We predicted pin end carnage as the port tackers would basically be laying the mark - unless a cheeky stbd tacker caused problems. We started towards the left of the line and were not over, unlke many. We got good speed for the 7 seconds (approx) it took to need to tack, but we overstood to avoid the million or so port tackers with whom a collision would be slow.

We got to the top with a much fancied Merlin named 'Brazilian', but the next leg was a kiteless fetch to a distant buoy. We got good t foil related speed (all good practice for the £$%^&* Mary in a couple of weeks) and were ahead of everyone as we bore away to hoist at the buoy. There was a small disaster as the foot tape of the kite caught under the bow requiring mrsdrlee to do a daring bow visit as a Dart 18 and 29er caned over us.

Soon we were at full blast and twinning and went the wrong way round the wind bend and the wrong way for the tidal sheer for the better pressure and clearer air offshore, getting to the bottom ahead after an absurdly early 'layline' judgement followed by an overcorrection.

The 'beat' was another fetch allowing for T foil capabilty and those crazy triangular waves to shake us around like a pair of lottery balls, and for us both to observe that we had lost sensation in our hands and feet as it was so bleeding cold.

At the top we looked back and saw Loco doing noble work of keeping up with the Dart 18.

The next lap had the first fetching leg a little tighter and a bit more wind, meaning a less hairy ride but less speed than last time. At the bear-away it was getting quite lumpy but we twinned again offshore for the more pressure, despite the clocking shift and the other factors suggesting an inshore route. The simple pleasure of completely maxing it in steady wind in a huge bit of water overcame quite how bloody freezing we were by this point.

At the bottom we went on for ages before gybing but still came in too high so ended up doing a little double on the way in to the mark. The fetch to the top was a bit freer with smoother sea this time.

At the top it was essentially close hauled to the bear away buoy. We chose the right again for the increased pressure down the run. Down this leg we lapped the Laser 2000 and most of the laser fleet who were basically sailing the rum line.

At the bottom we committed the school boy/girl error of soaking down to the mark while being swept up by the tide, with the first few lasers around  to miss also. We elected to sail past the mark with the kite still up and sort ourselves out while the tide was at least pushing us towards the destination. I luffed us up to close hauled once the the patches were in the chute, and it went in ok but was not pretty.

Once we were sorted out we had only a couple of lasers to burn through the lee of before being finished not a moment too soon: It was great fun but we were both absolutely chilled to the core by this stage.

We got ashore and packed up as quickly as we could and got showered before the prizegiving. We had won the race and (because of that) the winter series too, so now we have a fab silver jug to add to the huge glass one from the Autumn Series.

I want to say that Whitstable is a lot like Cherub heaven - in fact it's even better than heaven because you don't even have to die before you can go there. This is a seriously friendly and organised club with interesting and interested other sailors. The bar chat is never dull, and there's always loads going on.

Oh yes -  Banter report:

On the way out to the boat in her sailing kit, with her red aquafleece and balaclava on, a Whitstable member   sensibly staying in the bar said to Lucy,

"Good luck at the battle of Hastings!"

ROFL, I think.

Whitstable report - April 5th 2009

Today was another day in Cherub paradise: 10-12 knots wind - perhaps a little more at times. Sunny too with a slightly blue sea to sail on.

The race started at 11, with several Musto's on the line with us. It was a NEly wind which meant a tiny micro-beat before a hoist and engaging the warp drive. The MPS sailing race officer had set the assy's a barely credible 7 laps of the huge course - fabulous!

Basically it was perfect sailing conditions for us and Antidote made the most of it. Now we are both broken!

We are looking forward to doing the same again tomorrow, due to being on holiday.

More of the same today: lighter wind , but off-shore and funny pokey little gusts and BIG lulls.

Will & Stu did about three laps of the estuary as a T foil training session for Stu, then we swapped and Will & I had a bit of a blast.

One of the local musto sailors then brought us lunch in return for fixing his centerboard & case where he ran it aground on an inconveniently placed groyne at the end of last season.  Nice to be putting something back into the club, even if it is just a couple of blobs of epoxy. We'll have them making their own carbon foils before long........

And an excellent T-foil training session it was. Some big things I've taken away:

1) The T-foil can be the difference between 10knots and 14knots
2) If you pull too much T-foil on it stalls out, but this it's not immediately obvious when this happens
3) Will must have Ironman fingers to "twiddle" his T-foil on because there is some serious load on it

Thank you to Will and Lucy for having me as your guest, thank you to Will for coaching me and thank you to Lucy for letting me have some of your sailing time.

Easter report:

Thursday: Burning with the Musto Skiffists.

Friday: 2pm race. Some wind. The course was changed after we left the beach, and after some chinese whispers we thought we had the new course straight. When we got ashore after no hoot, behind Si Reynolds in his Musto but in front of the B14 we realised thateveryone had sailed the wrong course. However the Locoists had sailed a course which included all the the right buoys end achieved a well-earned first place!

Saturday: 2pm race. Light airs with v occasional twinning. V pleasant. Tip and tig with the B14s all the way round. Musto's got away though and were 1st-4th in the race.

Sunday: No wind; no racing. Spent afternoon discussing journalism with a newspaper photographer named Justin.

Monday: Light light airs. Foredecksville (Tenessee). All sore by the end.

4th in series I think. V enjoyable, but light light airs.

Three cherubs raced at Whitstable yesterday. Pulsing wind of 6-10 knots most of the time. Sunny and hot.

I noticed the Musto Skiffs were waiting for each other at the end of each leg: The one in front would wait for the others to catch up and then restart. More is learnt and more fun is had at the risk of messing up someone else's race and seeming like you are not taking the club racing too seriously. What do the other whitstablists think of us adopting this practice?

After the race some blasting was done as the sea breeze kicked in - some with the wrong teams in the wrong boats - Max fun for all. My grin is topped up for a few days anyway.

The swale was the perfect substrate for blasting yesterday in the sunshine and breeze....really magic!

I might be going to be to those parts and might check out the club and try and get a sail in if there are other cherubs there.

The SK4 is now fully installed at Whitstable, had a great blast last weekend with some serious wave jumping leading to no hull in the water at times (with the t foil on positive!), currently have no crew lined up so shall be looking for any willing cherrubers to come for a play! I also need to get that go in Eleanor, so some boat swapping is in order

The boat park seemed quite cherub bare, are Born Slippy and Antidote returning for the autumn?

Just waiting for the new foil and we'll be there. Boat swap would be fun, are you around this weekend? I'm busy but I know a helm who may be at a loose end.

It's the round Sheppey race this Saturday. With a manageable but plane-able 15mph and a good direction of SW (not to much beating/running) forecast couldn't the SK4 be up for beating the monohull course record of 2h59m set by an RS800?

Is anyone going? I probably am.

Born Slippy is residing at Thornbury. R + H have kindly lent her to us while E-numbers is being repaired.
The plan is to sail tomorrow and Sunday in single wire mode with Sarah helming.

Saturday's adventure is to sail from Thornbury to the Frampton pill and back. A group of boats from Frampton will be making this trip 1 way and going up the Frampton Pill. This is about 8 feet wide and only navigable about 20 minutes either side of a 9.7m high tide.

Sunday will be a walk in the park in comparison sailing one of Thornbury's long distance races.

On sunday 31st there is a chance that Eleanor, Riot Van and Atum will all be sailing at Whitstable.
Kevin Ellway is also coming along (Knee permitting) to have a play. We are going to see if we can borrow a RIB and get some more video footage.
I'm going to the club on sunday (17th) to make sure it's all right, but I don't think anyone would object if others wish to come and play.

Reminds me of the comedy moment at Largo Bay when we launched their rib only to find that it could only do a straight line.  They soon got it fixed though.

I will bring the HD cam again, best to have yours there too Si as the one i will have is a bit of a battery hog, it is shaping up to be a good end of season blast with eleanor, auntie, RV, ronin and me in the imposter sk4, hopefully the wind will blow and the sun will shine, but that may be too much to ask for the last day of october!

You can sail over low water, and it means there is loads of beach space.

It's not looking good for me/us, but we may be watching via the webcam.

In fact, can you try to rig and derig in view of the webcam and I will try to do a time lapse like this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuYj03qyzxM&feature=player_profilepage

If you rig between the extension of the slip and the post you will be well in shot.

When you see it its striking how long Laser sailors leave their sails flapping in the wind. And then complain that they clap out too quickly!

I hope you all have a great time on sunday at whitstable. I saw this on sailing anarchy and thought it would be worth a look for whoever is videoing at the weekend. It is a moth promo, the important thing is that the camera is in stationary boat and the moths all move around it. It gives an immediate feeling of speed and the camera is not moving around much. Great footage.

I may be finished by lunch time and will try to get down to come out in the RIB.

You would have been welocme at Chew? The sun was out accompanied with a gentle 2-4 right down the lake. 3 teabags in the lulls was cold.

Only snag is that the Bristolians have stolen most of the water  :-) .

Had an awesome sail with Will today in a fresh north easterly of around 15 knots. We blasted up and down completing a lap in around 15 mins, there were lots of white horses and some serious air time was achieved.
Will when you download the GPS let me know how fast we were going, and thanks for a great sail.

We had a light wind Easter sail this year with a 2.5 hour marathon 6 lap non shortenable W/L on Friday. We finished last boat through the line, but won by 9mins on corrected time.
Saturday started just as slow and a Musto managed to get away from us, by the time the wind picked up to
Just twinable it had too big a lead we ended 2nd.
On Sunday the wind was even lighter if that's possible. We finished 2nd to a 49er on the water but not sure of corrected time as we had to leave before the results were put up.
I am just starting to feel normal and uncramped at last, that boat really is small compared to Loco!

No pressure - but the results from Chew show that Paul won on Wednesday night in a place that defines unsuitable courses (only an 800 left ahead of him on the water).

Had a ballistic sail today in winds gusting up to 28mph, went out to race and decided that the wind was really too strong. We thought we would buzz the committee boat on a two sail reach then head up for a while. Had a swim on the tack but recovered quickly and hoisted the kite for an awesome three sail twin wired blast ( oh for a GPS). We did manage to film it all from the mast head camera which clearly shows the boat jumping off waves. Hopefully a little less tomorrow.
