Title: Inlands 2012
Post by: BenR on July 27, 2012, 04:12:34 PM
Hi all, When is the inlands this year. I cant find it on QMSC's website and am trying to do some rather ambitious calendar planning.

Will be there come he'll or high water even if I have to bring Eggbert. A big thankyou to Ade aswell for the epic sail in sweetdreams on Friday even if I did get a bit wobbly.  That boat shifts even with me at the back of the bus and tailgating a bit!

Just been upto QMSC.  The bund removal has started but will take quite a while to do (measured in months not days).

We should get Saturday on the big side and Sunday on the smaller.  I'll have a word with the PRO and make sure we get the biggest course possible.

Provisional start times are 11:30 Saturday and 11:00 Sunday (lets the club race boats launch in front of us).  Cherubs first start, B14's 5 mins later.

3 w/l per day back to back.  40 mins for lead boat.

Floor space available at ours as usual, or there is a Travel Lodge and Premier Inn at Sunbury Cross

Unless anyone objects the social will be a pub by the river in Lower Sunbury (The Magpie) and a curry (though we will pre-order this time!)

Looks like this one will be another fantastic event. With 6 weeks to go before the event, both Evo and Born Slippy have guest crews arrranged (and as with all things Cherub ATM even this was over subscribed).

Hayley and I are officially green with envy, Wedding is too far away to get back from even for the Sunday.

As there was such a good turnout of 97 rules boats at the Nats - to encourage the same at the inlands I'll get QMSC to provide a prize for 1st 97 rules boat.

hi guys a couple of questions, firstly what is the arrangement with entry, do we just show up on the day and pay then or do i need to do anything beforehand, secondly do we know how much its likely to cost and also people are saying things about floor space to stay at, would it be possible to book in  space for 2??
Cheers

You can pay on the day, I expect it will be in the region of £30 for the two days.  There is floor space for all at ours (bring sleeping equipment and your own toothbrush....)  There are even 2 spare beds and a camp bed for those who let me in at the start on the Saturday and don't tack on us  ;D

So as this is just over a week away who is comming?  And who will be around for the evening as I need to book the curryhouse.  I'll also post a link to their menu so we can order mains in advance and reduce the wait....

So far I've seen the following saying they will be there:

Sweet Dreams
Evo
Born Slippy
Eleanor
Usagi
Atum
Slippery
TWU
Ronin
Subtle
and I'm assuming Riot Van

Who else?

Added 02/11/2012
Marmite
Shiny Beast
S. Blonde
?Duck Wars

Ade and Joe (Sweet Dreamzzz) wont be staying for the curry. we are staying at friends north of QM so will have to pass, save me a papadom for Sunday though. Hopefully all the Midlands posse will all be coming (that is loco, blonde, norfolk in chance) not yet on your list Andy. If anyone in the Midlands wants to borrow Kokopelli she is ready to go but needs picking up.
Has anyone heard from Ben??? Ben if your boat not fixed yet i have a spare pole you can use!!!

Alex and I will be there for the sailing but not the evening.

If you are taking orders we request 15-20kts with a 10' lift each time we tack.

See you then.

We(Norfolk) can't make that weekend due to prior commitments.  I'm keen to try and make some of next years events though.

Ade drop me a text when you get a chance(I think you put me in your phone as Cherub Tom).  It would be good to try and organise another mini meet at Carsington before the really cold weather arrives!

Message/question for Clive, what gloves is Alex wearing in this clement weather? as Joe needs some new ones.
Title: Re: Inlands 2012
Post by: Clive Everest on November 02, 2012, 11:22:40 PM
Hi Ade,
We are currently visiting Helen's sister in Florida and so are not finding the weather too much of a problem.

Alex has been using some Gill regatta gloves. We are yet to face the challenge of proper Cherub winter sailing.

Last year we got out of it when I was knocked off my bike. This year we might spend the winter boat building.

He had some good neoprene gloves in the RS200 but I doubt that they would last a weekend in the Cherub.

QM might be a nasty shock.

Sorry not to be of much help.

Clive

Ade, if it helps I have very little hands and am not good with the cold (i turn into a corpse at below 10 degrees C). I had some azure neoprene gloves in xs that fitted well and were quite warm. They lasted a few outings, but expensive consumables. when it was really cold I wore grippy builders gloves over the top. These were too big on their own, but the best compromise I could find in the cold. Have now found thermal builders gloves, which are cheap and super warm. They go down to size small only in very select places, and are still too big, but they are the best compromise i've found. Oh, and they are dayglo yellow, so harder to lose  ;D

It looks like we'll be missing this one now as Dean can't sail. Still it's not all bad I forgot to get my drysuit fixed at the end of last winter, and I wasn't really looking forward to the cold.
Title: Re: Inlands 2012
Post by: andy_peters on November 05, 2012, 11:14:30 AM
Start time 11:30 on Saturday £30 entry fee.  3 races per day b2b.  Windward/Leeward, same as Nationals with thru an upwind gate.  Big side Saturday, smaller side Sunday.

I have asked for courses that use as much of the reservoir as possible (as per 2 years ago and not the short course style of last year!).  Would be nice if we had last years temperatures but I think that may be a hope to far...

Will be posting NoR as soon as I can get hold of Phil at QMSC.  He sent one through to me but in draft form.

will there be any provision to observe the Armistice day silence on Sunday?
Title: Re: Inlands 2012
Post by: Graham Bridle on November 05, 2012, 08:25:33 PM
Thats an interesting question Ben, but probably one for the club rather than the class. My guess is that it would be difficult to do as it would delay any start till probably 11:30 which is usually later than desired on a Sunday.

Or we could just ask for a start not to be at 11 on the dot, so we could observe it on the water..... that would be interesting !

If its something you feel strongly about I will happily discuss it with the race officer on Saturday morning.

Agree with Graham, we can discuss at the briefing.  I'm sure QMSC will be happy to delay our start by 10 mins if we wanted to.

Bearing in mid it will be dark early therefore no late sailing what time do people want the curry?  Earlyish and time for pub beers later, say 7pm.  Or beers first and curry at say 9.30pm?

I'll book what the majority (or those who have an opinion) want.  Menu is

Choose and post your main and I'll get it pre-ordered so we don't wait ages.

We'll all be bored by 5 I guess, and hungry. I'd vote for the curry at a really early time like 7 (bear in mind we have three under 14's in the fleet now, mind I dont know if they will cuzza or not.) - that will still probably give enough time for a couple of snifters first, and plenty of time for a couple of nightcaps later.

hi all,
As it is Movember and very close to my 'heart', I am currently trying a MO. (Debs is not talking to me until Dec 1st which is when i shave it off!). Therefore, just as on the water, I will be pursuing everyone, but this time for sponsorship!!! Its a great cause and i hope you wont mind me pestering you (just once) at the weekend.
By the way I got the all clear a few weeks ago, so i now have my life back and am very happy and grateful about it too. I have only praise, relief, wonder and thanks for all who work to help and heal us...
PS. I would like to be known as 'Wing Commander Spiffy' for any port/starboard incidents that may occur!

Very brief report, from memory, hav'nt seen any official results.

Wind - 0-5knts, directionally unstable !
3 races in, I think winners were Marmite, Ronin, Ronin; always up in 2nd and 3rd were E-Numbers and Usagi.

Some amazing performances by the Wing Commander & Joe in sweet dreemz and new boys Johnny & Alex in Suicide, both well in with the 05 rules boats.

Welcome beer at Andy and Jills, curry for 20 and some rum in the Magpie. Those slightly age disadvantaged (on either end f the scale) went for some sleep, I await an end of pay match report for those that didnt !

Full report to follow.

Title: Re: Inlands 2012
Post by: Graham Bridle on November 12, 2012, 09:19:04 AM
Sunday did indeed dawn windless and grey, but during a well observed 2 minute silence the wind filled in from the west to give somewhere round the 5 knots we needed to allow the eager race officer to get us all underway.

The first race was a closely fault battle between Marmite, Riot Van and Ronin with much place changing during the 4 laps, at the bottom mark Riot Van had a boat length on Marmite, but during the frantic tacks for the line Paul stuffed his tiller extension up his life jacket and fell in, leaving the door open for Ronin to take 2nd.

The wind held for a 2nd race where a similar battle ensued. This time Marmite took it from Riot Van and Ronin 3rd.

The wind didnt hold so well for Race 3 where it dropped to Saturdays levels, a mighty battle was happening at the front between Marmite, Usagi, Ronin, E-Numbers and Sweet Dreemz, thankfully shortened to 3 laps Usagi took line honours from Marmite and E-Numbers 3rd.

Full results are here http://www.queenmary.org.uk/SailResults/Open%20Racing%202012/20121111_B14%20&%20Cherub%20Inland%20Championships.htm (http://www.queenmary.org.uk/SailResults/Open%20Racing%202012/20121111_B14%20&%20Cherub%20Inland%20Championships.htm)

This was a fantastic event. 15 boats supports our increasing numbers throughout 2012, and for the first time we had more entries than the B14's.

In six races we had 4 different winning boats, first place was decided on discard (or count back or whatever it is called these days) and 3rd and 4th seperated only by a point - this underlines that Cherub sailors are getting more skilled and the racing is getting closer, all of which is fantastic positive stuff.

Things we learnt.

1. We should have a 97 rules trophy for the inlands (Sorry Joe, but you know if we'd done it, it was yours ) !

2. Some of the older boats can still turn it on big time, Sweet Dreemz in particular - first at the top mark more than once, beat me twice and dont think I wasnt trying ! Suicide Blonde also showed impressive speed in the hands of our new members Alex and Johnny all the way from Liverpool.

3. Anyone who ordered a Lamb or Chicken Pasanda has to wear a pink tutu next event.

My apologies for the bits I dont know/have forgotten, perhaps some others can help me.

Many congratulations to Paul and Tom in Marmite, very well done.

Good work to the boys in Atum on winning the travellers. A thoroughly consistant performance over the year, you've come on a long way! Nice one.

Ade, hope you will be making some more mods to your boat over the winter? I'd suggest lead and a sea anchor  ;)

Very nice to see everyone and look forward to 2013, let's try and pick up where we have left off.

Had a really good weekend and agree that the racing was tight and quite tactical.

Callum enjoyed the weekend and has the cherub bug.  He did a great job all weekend and we improved our techniques in these light conditions.

Sweet dreams was by my thinking the best performing boat over the weekend.  If we were sailing to handicaps i'm sure she would have been winning.  It reminded me how high a 97 rules boat can point.

Andy and Jill were also super hosts and the bacon baps kept me going until 5pm when I devoured 2 cornish pasties.
Is anyone putting a report together for yachts and yachting?

Title: Re: Inlands 2012
Post by: BenR on November 12, 2012, 01:12:43 PM
I am supposed to be doing this and will hopefully have something hacked together by the end of the day to send to Hayley for final edit and send out to Y&Y.
If anyone else (who was more involved in the close racing up front) would like to do this then they are most welcome to do so. Otherwise I will be using Graham's posts above as gospel truth as to what happened on the horizon.
Seconded on Jill and Andy's hospitality, it was top notch and very much appreciated!!

Racing was less than spectacular from team Atum although we did have a few close races, being edged out by Jo and Nick in Madge with a great move at the bottom mark and pipping Sweet Dreamzzz with a ridiculously late drop.

My favourite sailing moment though was arriving at the committee boat with the kite up as the final race started having gone ashore after race two to sort out a bad case of TB.

1st rule of report writing: Don't let the truth hinder a good story.

Consider it a bit more like writing for The Star than The Guardian.

Get creative.

On Saturday we were first to the windward mark in race 2 and went backwards from there. In race three we worked hard to get past andy and jill on the last beat only to gybe off into a big hole on the final run.
the Jenkins sailed past Graham and Eddie in a private gust (that stayed with them from the top to bottom mark) of the final run of the third race.

General observations were that Paul and Tom were pointing well with good speed and Paul and Peter had good speed and strong tactics.

Suicide Blonde were rapid and always snapping at our heels and sweet dreams I have already commended.

My bro has some photos very similar to Hannahs but taken on the Sunday. Hayley if you PM me with your email address i can attach them to you if you want, likewise for others as well. But i cant do it through the website so dont link me back i need the email ads
We loved the weekend. Joe is still stoked and i am still aching.
On the downside, if I knew the results were only 05 i would used the 05 rig, unfortunately i only had the 97 with me so we were stuffed.  Even so we found out Sweet Dreamzzz can be pretty fast and I was very pleased as we got faster and faster each race!!! loved it, thanks all. Sorry again to Phil for stuffing him up the backside round the leward mark with me spinny pole!
Mo still attached . I will send the MOvember link soon, cheers from WC Spiffy!

Loco's video footage is edited and will be posted tomorrow - we got the near miss on skewering Clive.

We were pleased with our weekend and Sam is showing worrying signs of that dangerous disease 'Cherub obsession'.

Once we had a bit more speed after I'd tweaked the rig (thanks for the advice Si) and once we got a decent start or two we were content. We just need a bit more speed and more practice. Fantastic weekend despite the light winds.

Our trailer base went missing and Loco is still at QMSC. I might need to borrow a trailer sometime if it doesn't turn up and the insurance company play up a bit (unlikely?)
