For those planning to sail at the Thornbury regatta event no the 9th and 10th July I have attached the event poster.  please note that the start times are a little later than previously advertised.

There will be an evening meal served at 7:30pm tickets to purchased at registration.
Food and drinks available all day.

We have had a bit of a break through with club racing courses getting windward-leewward courses most days.  Therefore we should be getting good courses at the regatta.

I forgot to add there is loads of space to camp on site for free and the bar will be well stocked.

I think those who went last year will agree that the event is as much of a festival as a sailing event.  Camping on  site is positively encouraged. There is a great pub serving food (made in their kitchen, not ping fodder) a few minutes walk form the club house. As we will be in a tent, there are some beds at ours in Bristol for anyone needing better accommodation (about 25 minutes away by car).

Am seriously looking forward to using my favorite set of navigation aids again (a nuclear power station, the church on the hill, the seven road bridges and Wales).

Only a few days to go till Thornbury. Born Slippy went down on Sunday. We made it there for 9.30, but sadly the wind did not.

Now the hard decision - sail the slug or the E5.....

Sailing instructions will be available on the day.
race start times were on the poster.
The event will follow the usual format for the club with 2 races each day back to back.

If the course is changed after race 1 it will be verbally comunicated to the sailors from the rescue boat.  (only happens ocasionally).
Marks are fixed and usually either blue or orange and various sizes.

A breifing will be held some time before racing will start.

general advice is don't launch to late the slipway can be quite busy.
The races can't be postponed for too long so there is a posibility that late launchers may miss a start.

otherwise enjoy. I look forward to seeing you all.

I think Usagi was planning on this one.

Yes we will be there.  How come Exmouth Duck Pond makes it as a location for Wind Guru but Weston Super Mud is the nearest I can find to Thornbury?

Ace, so a more reliable list looks like ....

Ronin
Riot Van
Eleanor
E-Numbers
Exultant
Antidode
Usagi
Shiny Beast
Beans ??
Pasta ??

That makes 8/10 - a respectable number at an event by any class these days - however we still need more, so if anyone can exert any influence on anyone else, go do it !

Thornbury used to be in windguru but the spot was removed a few months ago.

Not sure why.

Frampton is 15 miles upstream and just off the river and features on windguru.  This should give a similar forcast to Thornbury. Since the GFS weather model is not influenced by geography it will not acount for the funneling effect that a south westerly gives up the estuary (the wind tunnel that Roland reffers to). It will also not (when beating) account for the drop in apparent wind caused by the incoming tide over the first race and the increase in apparent wind wind the tide is going out.  The maximum affect of the tide could feel like 7 knots of wind.

Maybe I'm being dumb but I can't find Frampton on WG. The closest I can see is Severn Beach.

For those who are visiting Thornbury SC for the first time or can't remember the way there from last year please I hope you will find the following usefull.

The sailing club is close to the village of Oldbury on Severn but takes it's name from the larger town of Thornbury.  So find oldbury on Severn on your road map. Roads passing Thornbury are signposted to Oldbury and Cowhill.

The entrance to the club's long track is opposite the Anchor inn in Oldbury. The track is also part of the Severn Way footpath.

The post code of the Anchor is BS35 1QA.

Approaching from the M4 you can either go up the M5 for a junction or up the A38.  Take the second turning for thornbury  (from the south) then turn right at the next roundabout.  Cross the staggered cross road and follow the signs to Oldbury and Cowhill.

I have written a report (I believe thats the punishment for 3rd place) and put it on the home page, also submitted to Y&Y.

I feel its important to emphasise the significance of the turn out we had at this event. Nine boats made for some excellent racing at all ends of the fleet and an great social time. Its my firm belief that event turn outs of at least these numbers are the seeds that are required to really create a fleet  with a solid long term future. It makes our reports to Y&Y look better (I personally dont believe in sending 3 boat reports) and might help get some second hand boats moving and attract some new young blood into the fleet.

Its like beer, it just generally helps everything.

Outside the nationals, we've two events left at Weston and QM, so lets make sure that nine boats doesnt end up a 2011 record. Do I have to employ cheerleaders to get everyone there !

Will- it was honestly epic, Sunday was the best racing we've ever had outside the nationals... the only thing missing was the Lee's - consider that pressure to get the Fiat full of family down to Weston :)

Definitely the best sailing and racing  I have had since the last nationals. Great club and sailing area. I also really enjoyed the additional challenge of predicting the angles in the mega tide.

It was pointed out how the tacking up the shore improves your boat handling and boat on boat tactics.

Tacking against the tide also favours boats that point high so there is a difficult balance between reducing the number of tacks and sailing more into the stronger tide, going slow and high against low and fast, not hitting the mud and not getting pinned by another boat.  usually you find that the fireball has beeten you to the windward mark or even the day boat.

On saturday we just went for the minimise tacks option and keep out of the way of other boats.

I'm glad you all enjoyed it.  I will feed back to the club.

I'm glad you all enjoyed it too. I had two great races on Sunday trying to hold off Paul and Graham and at least finish 1st over the water.
Sorry to those of you who had to shoot off before the results were published. We'll be having a de-brief at the club at the next commitee meeting as we always want to try and improve the event and obviously want to see you all back again next year.

I'll have to try and lobby the RYA for a reduction of the Cherub PY to 860!!!!

I'll second all the opinions about the weekend.  We even pioneered a new launching technigue best described as capsized drag by rib off mud.  Much less tiring than wading out to deep water.

Oh and a note on the report - rule 7?  Is that the rule that states no cherub shall have any equipment sourced from a SMOD - or another rule I'm not aware of?  ???

TSC

Given that the RYA struggle to get PY returns for small classes and this can distort the published PY's the class should support any club that can provide Sail wave result returns to the RYA to help to update the Cherub handicap.

Then we can look forward to beating you fair and sqaure next year and enjoy that nice smug feeling of success ;-)

For anyone wondering about the band mentioned in the report, this is them, http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=As_G-x_KsN4#at=46

Just combine that, with a worryingly flexible first floor sailing club floor and phils dancing and you are getting close to how mad it really was
