What? Try-a-Cherub Day and Blast
When? 20/21 March 2010
Where? Draycote SC
-
The first event after the dinghy show, where if all goes to plan we will have the next generation of cherubists lining up asking for a go, we have a healthy amount of boats for sale due to new builds, and this means we are in a good position to continue the expansion of the class,
So this is the part where i ask for your help
If people willing to give demo rides could commit early we can really push on the publicity to get as many people there as possible, without leaving them watching on the shore, i will coordinate this push, and deal with interest so everyone doesn't turn up at once, and hopefully it will be a great event for both current and prospective cherub sailors!
-
As has been done previously, I think it would be a really good idea if we can make a 'classifieds' document which lists all of the current second hand boats on the market which we can have on the stand at the boat show. If then, we can try and get as many of these second hand boats to the blast as well, then we have a really good chance of getting the interested sailors into some of the boats so they can then part with their cash!
Let's hope the snow has cleared up by then and it is sure to be a great event!
-
I will try to sort the document for the stand, does anyone know where we have had stuff printed before? Also approximate numbers used. I think it would also be a good idea to ask anyone available/interested in doing a stint on the stand to put their names forward, so a roster can be sorted.
-
Team Stanley are happy to do a stint on the stand. We will also be at the blast weekend, possibly with the intention of a boat purchase.
-
ill be at the dinghy show and the blast so can help if needed
-
We have a printer at work which is more than up to the job of printing a few sheets off. Can do double sided, folded, stapled, hole punched, a4, a3.... We pay per sheet as it is a leased machine so I can either arrange a good price or have a nice word to my boss for a better deal!
Fund dependant I will either just be at the blast or possibly might come to the show too. Just as you will know from driving down to Babbacombe it is a fair way to travel for the day, and I have another hour on top of that to get to Kingsbridge!
I will also look into bringing both boats along to the blast if I can piggy back them on the single trailer if it looks like we are short of boats.
-
We got through about 500 flyers last time? As for the show I may now even be able to offer a taxi form Bristol...
-
I may have a few of the flyers left from last year which Roland put together.
Has the house situation improved R.
-
Also, I am happy to do graphic design work for flyers if needed.
-
I may well take you up on that. R was that 500 in total as I was thinking of a for sale leaflet , a 2010 events calender. Any other suggestions? Also I was going to ask Mike Cooke if he would like to advertise the E6 with a price list so people can see what a new boat costs built.
-
Sorry am already booked that weekend - so no BS or EJ.
-
:( i was looking forward to seeing EJ as inspiration!
-
She should be a Chew/Thornbury in the very near future.
-
Sorry Lucy and I are busy for the blast too.
We are available for a stint at the dinghy show.
(I went the boatshow yesterday - it was incredibly quiet)
We would like to host a Chilli Challenge (with quiz and kipover capability) too.
-
A chilli con carneval perhaps!
-
Thanks all for volunteering help at the show, perhaps if you could post favoured Day and Time (thinking two hour stints) It might help everyone.
-
ill be there all sunday afternoon if needed
-
Sarah and I will obviously be avaialble to be on the stand making sure that everyone say's nice things about the boat.
Sarah often has a byte committee meeting late morning - lunch time sat so best avoid that.
Last year worked well with some people doing one two hour stint each day or if only at the show one day doing one stint.
We are in London this Sunday floating around near the boat show.
-
Sat morn 'til lunch.
-
Sorry Lucy and I are busy for the blast too.
how many E5s will be there then without the trims and lees. If a new gen boat is coming me and digby were wondering if we could have a go???
-
Unfortunately, due to lack of available boats/helms the event has been cancelled.
We are doing our best to re-arrange.
-
:( looking forward to that...........
-
Surely , "Will be moved to another date."?
-
We are working hard to get this re-arranged.
-
Jill and I can do the last couple of hours on the Saturday of the show. Might be the encouragement we need to put Usagi back in the water for 2010
-
Cheers Andy thats great ;D
-
Not certain I'm going, but eddie is applying pressure; if we do it will be Sat PM so if you need help then be pleased to do a stint - we can advertise eddie as extending the age range actively sailing cherubs !
-
Is this a test for prospective volanteers for the boat show?
Probably can help if that was the question.
-
Hi Dave when are you thinking of going to the show? Saturday seems covered but sunday could use some help.
-
There is kippability for those who would like.
-
sunday morning is ok
-
on news on demo day schedulement?
-
New Date New Location...
What - Try a Cherub Day
Where - Draycote SC
When - 20/21st March
-
I think we will be there with 2 boats
-
I have spoken with Tom Vian at Draycote today regarding the event. The general plan goes something a little like this...
Saturday AM. Arrive and rig up down on the open meeting beach.
Saturday PM. Due to another event being held, we may launch from 1pm until the lake closes. So plenty of time to rig up, chat and have lunch.
Saturday Evening. Drinks at the club and then go to a Pub / Curry House / Chinese... whatever seems appropriate.
Sunday. We can launch whenever in the morning, and can sail all day. If people want to then they can take part in racing.
As this is being pushed as a 'post show blast' the more boats we can get there the better. Ideally we will have lots of interested sailors coming up and having sails in the boats which are currently available second hand, so if they can be there, all the better!
As the first scheduled sailing event of the year (unless your name is begins with Peter and ends in Barton!) it is good to get out and blow away the cobwebs after a long cold winter. Even if you can't bring a boat, come along and I am sure there will be enough spare boats and sailors for everyone to get out on the water.
-
provided that i can get the boat fully dried out and sealed up with its new lick of paint i should be able to come along with SB.
Now do i bring the 18fter with me for those who arent on their cherubs...
-
I will do my best to be there. I want to come and see/sail some boats to get some building ideas. Might be tempted to buy second hand instead and put building on hold though. I will try and chat to Mr Stanleys new owner and invite him along.
-
i will be there as its digby's home club:)
james bring the 18fter
-
Now do i bring the 18fter with me for those who arent on their cherubs...
I'de say not, we want to show off the Cherubs. No distractions would be best I think.
-
Also, I know that the boys at Draycote had great trouble being allowed to have their 18's at the club and they have restrictions on when they can sail them. So probably best avoided for that reason too.
-
ah, unfortunately clashes with the first RS200 SEAS event. As I'm the series organiser I had better show up.
-
Here is the rosta for the dinghy show stand, if anyone is now unavailable or would like a different time please let me know.

-
great Simon,
thanks for the rosta. that's perfect for us.
We will be picking up the display boards this weekend and will see if we can get enough for 2 full sides of the stand. i doubt that we will need all this.
We will prepare the boat to be in tip top show condition. I must bond the T-foil cleat support back on after I knocked it off on saturday. I had bonded it on to paint which doesn't work by the way.
We intend to be at the chilli challenge. and would like to reserve some floor space please Will and Lucy.
I will look into bringing slippery up to the blast.
Look forward to seeing you all.
-
(now ex) Team Stanley can now only make the Saturday but are happy to help with the final slot of the day if needed. I am also putting together the for sale flyer.
-
we will only be able to get to the demo weeekend on saturday PM prrobably because of boarding, school, prob be there around 1 with cheese still on trailer
-
The Badger will still be in hibernation as is a winter shy bugger, but I will be unleashing 2303 onto the water for some single string symmetric mayhem! Can't wait!
I will look into accommodation locally, in previous years I have camped, slept in the car, stayed at Draycote sailors houses or stayed at the local Holiday Inn express so there are plenty of options. I would suggest that camping is a no go as it's too cold. (Tinner probably still remembers the night where he was attacked by the tent in the gales a few years ago around this time of year!)
-
For Sale list: If anyone has anything to add please let me know before tomorrow.
-
I am available to help out at boat show and may be bringing a possible cherub convert. Will definately proberly be at demo day with Monkey too.
-
for sale leaflet looks good.
I intend to put an article up on Yachts and yachting advertising the cherub class. just seen an RYA article talking about home building but think we have some one-upmanship. What is our stand location?
-
I intend to put an article up on Yachts and yachting advertising the cherub class.
I am already in the process of making one as more dates for events are confirmed
-
I will be at Draycote with Loco for the blast.
-
...just booked the tickets :D
-
We will be going direct to the show on Sunday morning.
What time do we need to get there and will someone have passes etc?
-
How did the show go?
Team Trim had an thouroughly enjoyable, but entirely unscheduled, 500 mile round trip in a van so missed the lot.
-
The dinghy show was a huge success for the class. We had a great spot and a lot of foot fall and interest from punters and other classes alike. Allen were keen to see how we had used their fittings on E-numbers and were interested to discuss block capsizing issues. Equally.
We were visited by our friends from Alverbanks and Ardvark and notable sailing personalities such as Julian Bethwaite, Dave Hall and probably more. Importantly a lot of class members were able to catch up with each other on the stand and for the chilli (er piza challenge) on Staurday evening. Many thanks for Will and lucy for hoasting this social and providing kippage.
Even more importantly we spoke to quite a few people who were keen to have a go in a boat at draycote. If you were them we look forward to seeing you.
The stand would have nt been such a success were it not for the enthusiasm of everyone who manned the stand.
We should also thank Simon and dean for getting some brilliant pictures blown up, leaflets printed and organising the logistics, Dan for liasing with the RYA and getting us a good spot in the show, the Kiddles for producing the DVD and the high quality book of our build. Paul helped by building the excellent boat stand.
Thank you for asking Sarah and I to display our boat on the stand. We recieved so many complements on our work in putting E-numbers together from public and professionals alike. We went home happy but tired.
The big news:
We were verbally offered the hall of fame at the show for our 60th aniversarry year . This will allow us to show off several boats from the history of the class in the main corridor that connects the main exibition areas. This will require more effort than usual but is a unique opportunity that can really raise the profile of the class. We have some ideas of the boats that we would like to include but obviously finding them and bringing them to show standard may take some effort. i suggest that we create a small committee to look after this and next year's show.
-
Nice one Phil.
I'm sure i speak on behalf of all that couldnt make it when I offer a big Thanks to those of you that did and put so much effort into class publicity. I did see someone Sunday who is definately NOT a cherub fan who had to admit the boat and the stand looked fantastic.
Any of you got any pics of the stand ?
-
Seconded - the boat looked great and there was much positivity.
Consider me/us officially volunteered for historical boat finding and bringing duties. We will definitely need help with boat prettying duties if any of these are required though.
-
A huge thanks to all for your help. It was great to see so many faces , There is a photo of the stand I will try to sort it later.
-

I can volunteer a lovely example of a Forman 4c (g) ;D
-
please find Simon's picture of the stand before the show had opened.
It would have been dificult to see the boat at anyother time because there were so many people around it.
-
Nice work chaps. I hope the leaflets were ok. I had to cut them all in half by hand with a Stanley knife as I couldn't find a guillotine at late notice!
-
We shifted quite a few leaflets but still had 2/3rds left at the end it was suggested that we would do better to put a few pictures on them next year.
-
Stand was looking good! Took a while to find it being in the "other" hall as opposed to the previous years.
Been for my yearly loiter, remembered my login details here, persuaded the helm - Jon and I will be there this year, 500's for sale, Jaw's staying at home to vehicle-related mishaps shouldn't interfere again. . . All good 8)
-
100% at draycote now.
however bringing the boat is now an issue, due to the fact that i am replacing my car on monday where the new car lacks a towbar. is anyone able to come via rickmansworth hertfordshire so i can take suicide with me?
my other mode of transport with a towbar on it will be on the south coast full of furniture
-
100% a draycote too. cheese has just been re-roped a bit also to make it more "digby-friendly"
-
How many new faces are we expecting from the show? Did anyone take down any contact details to we can remind people to attend?
-
I spoke to at least four people who were keen to have a go, and directed them to the website to confirm if they could make it. Sorry didn't get their details.
-
i spoke to 3 or 4 individuals and couples who were definitely interested in having a go. Again i suggested that they say hi on the forumn.
I didn't record contact details.
Perhaps next year we sould ask interested people to voluenteer contact details. Personnaly I think it might provide a bit more focus after the show and people might attend however. We will have to be careful how that information is managed
I have someone coming up to look at Slippery too who wasn't at the show.
Thanks for the change to the start time Tim.
-
the hobie class were doing what you are thinking of. they were handing out forms to fill in with contact details. they just emailed me about my "interest" and i think its quite a good system.
-
Hi guys, I'm probably one of those individuals you guys mentioned above. . . I forgot the name of the guy I spoke to, though I remember he said he sails in Poole. I am definitely interested to give it a try in Draycote on Saturday! I've got not car at the moment and was wondering if, by any chance, there would be anyone going from London that could give me a ride ;)?
-
Where abouts in London are you?
-
Potentially going to Draycote, potentially buying a car on Thursday otherwise I'll be getting a train to Rugby and begging a lift from there. Either way I'll be able to meet you for liftage or trainage if I'm going.
I'm in Barnet, North London. Where abouts are you?
EDIT: Where are people kipping?
-
I'm in Swiss Cottage/Finchley Rd area but I can meet at any other place more convenient. My wife vetoed the "buy a car on Thursday" alternative I was considering as well. . . :(
-
Ross/Premi,
If you would like a lift, without the need for a train ticket then i'm willing to give you guys a lift if you are able to get yourselves to Rickmansworth station on the met line.
give me a call if you do, to sort out the details!
Ross: for me its called Hotel Rover i think. nice cheap option, even if it will be a little chilly!

-
Ross, not sure what other people are doing about accommodation, there are a few travel lodges and things in Rugby which are reasonable value. Myself, the Kiddles and WAGS are staying in a holiday cottage near Dunchurch so if a few of you teamed up that might be an economical option too. I'll try and find the link so you can check availability.
-
Turns out I'm heading up Sunday morning with Stu. See you there.
-
Excellent. Will be good to see you both.
-
And Ronin.
-
ross, how was your induction from pete?
-
Done! I'm going with James on Saturday. Are most people going to stay for Sunday then? I need to come back to London a bit early on Sunday but I think I should be able to get a train from Rugby. Does anyone have any more info for the accommodation? Best, Paulo
-
the commitee at draycote have asked we remember to sign on for racing on sunday so they can send in returns to the RYA for our experimental yardstick
-
Hey Guys and Gals long time no speak. I've found out today that i've got the weekend off so will be coming down for at least one of the days unfortnatley "Eggbert" is a little bit naked so won't be able to make the trip but it will be nice to catch up with those of you that i know and those that i don't. It would be nice if i could go for a blast aswell but i don't won't to take time away from potential newcommers as that would defeat the object of the whole weekend!
-
We might be along for the saturday, depending on if we can pick the shell up from Ian C or Simon on the same day.
-
well that was awesome
-
your not wrong!
-
if anyone wants to post their highlights/stories from the weekend, i will stick them all together for a proper report
-
did anyone get any piccies?
-
We went by accident and had a great time! I say we had a great time, but it was really just me, I dispatched Holly and Alex off to Simon's to pick up the Slug shell. I felt a bit bad blasting about in Atum Bom whilst they were off picking up new toys for me to play with, but I had a good sail. They enjoyed the trip anyway though. I have had my fears confirmed that I can't really handle a Cherub but also, dreams confirmed that it is possible to build one. I am not going to let myself get too into all that till my exams are all done though but there should be one more boat on the water by the '11 nationals! If I can learn to sail by then!
-
A good weekend. Several new people came and got wet (one very). It was great to meet up with everyone.
Many thanks for Tom K. for putting his body on the line and taking a guest for a sail in EJ. Watching from the shore/rescue boat was entertaining and confirms our boat is actually very solidly built. Seeing a 6ft2 built 18ft skiffer bouncing on your board is strangely scary. Sadly the fatties did eventually wear through the trap line lashings at mast head and arrived back at shore a bit wet. Hopefully by next year the boat will not be a cat's cradle...
-
A very enjoyable weekend. It was good to get out on the water sail some different boats, sail with some different people and meet some new members to the class. I hope we get as many boats to the next event.
I am glad I can fit between the racks and the hull of the Elway 5 because it makes it a lot easier to get back in after a capsize.
I need to practice twin wiring down wind and work out where to put my feet through the manoeuvres on the modern boats. Slippery felt much easier to sail than the newer boats.
-
I had an EXCELLENT weekend. Firstly the big news is that 2303 floats and sails, managed a good run with the kite up and on the trapeze but some tweaking needs to be done before we perfect those wire to wire gybes! Discovered that the wooden parts aren't as solid as I originally thought, but overall am very happy! Kate, my girlfriend, experienced her first proper sailing (apart from 30mins on a Dart in Portugal) and is thoroughly hooked.
Was nice to sail Loco and get my first twin wire action since the nationals, looking forward to Weston in a couple of weeks now.
Thanks to everyone for making the effort of bringing their boats and making this weekend work. I think we had some happy 'customers' as well as happy cherubbers so all in all great news.
As Phil says, let's try and get at least as many boats as that to the rest of the events this season.
-
Really had a good day on Saturday! Good to see the many different boats and meet all the people. . . cherubists proved be as good at sailing as they're at chatting and eating! Excellent (well behaved) sailing in Slippery and lots of swimming in Atum Bom. . . and it was probably no more than 8 knots. . . Special thanks to Phil who was brave enough to go out sailing/swimming with me twice and to James who gave me the lift from London and made everything so convenient for me.
Next steps will be to do a bit more crewing in Portsmouth to get acquainted with the area and the clubs and, if everything goes well, to have a chat with the boss (my wife. . ) to get authorization to buy a boat!
-
i must thank will for the blast i had in antidote, i throughly enjoy the new breed of rocket ships. Digby thanks roland aswell for his go in exultant. the E5s seem to go upwind as quick as cheese goes downwind!
p.s. for those that saw the little argument me and digs had on the sunday, its all sorted now so alls good :)
-
hay this is digby just wanted to say meny thanks to all on the weekend had a ausom time ;D
-
Good to see you on the forum Diggers, glad you had a good weekend!
-
hay this is digby just wanted to say meny thanks to all on the weekend had a ausom time ;D
Hope your nose is better? Strangely bouyant CB in the face is a fairly unpleasant experience...
-
yes, what actually happened with that, iv heard a little bit about it but ?
-
Premi
if you can make it to Weston Sailing club over easter several boats will be down there. I'm sure with a bit of fore warning you and your lady can have a little blast if you want to.
