Title: Mountain Biking Weekender
Post by: Stuart Hopson on February 18, 2008, 07:50:16 PM
After an excellent ride with Tim (I ride a boneshaker) Noyce and Iain (i like to fall off in muddy fields) Christie. I thought I'd ask if anybody is up for a weekends mountain biking, Probably in north Wales, Accomadation isn't really an issue as i live a maximum of an hour and a half away from all the trails i have listed and any more, and kipability is plentiful! Provisional date of March 29th and 30th.

Choice of rides... (theres many more please feel free to suggest others!)

The Marin Trail (Betws - y - Coed) http://www.mbwales.com/gwydyr_forest/maps.htm (http://www.mbwales.com/gwydyr_forest/maps.htm) to map and some basic details

Coed -y - Brenin (various trails) http://www.mbwales.com/coed_y_brenin/index.htm (http://www.mbwales.com/coed_y_brenin/index.htm)

Coed - y - Llandegla (my local ride, some very fast flowing sections of single track not as natural as other sugestions) http://www.coedllandegla.com/ (http://www.coedllandegla.com/)

Theres loads more to choose from too.

Post here if you may be interested the date can be changed if necessary.

having done some brief research, I think that I have found the right machine...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Giant-DX-Revive-semi-recumbent-bicycle_W0QQitemZ220200551550QQihZ012QQcategoryZ33503QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Giant-DX-Revive-semi-recumbent-bicycle_W0QQitemZ220200551550QQihZ012QQcategoryZ33503QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

the deal breaker is here... "Great bike for those who find traditional upright ones uncomfortable or who prefer some back support. A much more relaxed way of cycling."

Perfect  :)

Tim she's a beauty.  Do it.

You can easily improve her mud manners with a few modifications which only a Cherub sailor could pull off.  I've still got the standard springs and shockers off the Discovery before I did the 2" lift, they'll be perfect for optimum mud clearance, especially if we've done "all you can eat and trust me that's a **** of a lot" Chinese the night before again.

And if it's a bit high to easily get on to after those mods I've also got the side steps...I reckon they'll fit OK on that beast of a swingarm! ;D

Thanks for the offer Iain, but I think if I was going to upgrade the suspension I'd go for the rally shocks with increased length pistons. Looking at that sporty number, the chances of me getting huge air is a certainty and it'll just really let me drive the power through that back wheel. If you have any spare tyres though, I am sure they could be built into the project. She'd be a real weapon.  ;D

Dont forget the sponsors stickers for an extra shed load of power!

There was a whole section of off road unicycling I saw on a biking video years ago which was just insane... if I find it I'll post it.

They're crazy cats though!

Good first day under our belts, got some severe achage and some of us have some battle scars.... hoppy. Did the MBR trail at Coed y Brenin, not sure how to pronounce where that is but i can assure you that there were more sheep than people in the vacinity! 25k of some of the most ridiculous inclines and downhill sections, well worth the visit. Highlight of the day was the Bacon, Sausage and Egg butty at an organic farm shop before we started... could have called it a day there and we'd still have had a good day!

Just off for a curry now so might have to refridgerate the saddle for the morning to ease the burn :o

The weekend was fully awesome, those who didn't attend really did miss out. Saturday was very damp but very technical riding, Sunday was more man made trails but we managed to safely negotiate the red run with all the exciting elements of the black runs. Fully cool!

We'll be organising another session soon, possibly with some camping involved to make a real weekend of it.

DO IT!!!

These things go places that Land Rovers won't look at...OK so deep mud and ruts challenges them a bit, but they are just superb on steep hills and similar!

And you can always put dumper tyres on for serious playtime (not road legal of course)

Only problem is that one looks far too nice to take off road!

I'm going to have a go but I fear it will go way over my budget!

Deep tread tires, snorkel, bull bars and extra lamps and I'll have a real off road beast :o

Had the bike since sunday and have been out on it every day since! Went for a cheeky ride round Carsington after work this evening with Hoppy. Certainly helps to have a fellow mountain biker / cherubber under the roof to help with motivation towards post work activities! Gonna try and do some club racing in 'da Bom' next Wednesday! Sorted out finishing work at 4 so we have time to rig up and pay for day sailing rather than paying the ludicrous £350 membership fees  :o

My bike quiver has now extended to 3 bikes! My parents neighbour kindly GAVE me a Peugeot Racing bike as it was apparently cluttering his garage up and wanted rid of it. I shall have to get out the camera and take pics of both new machines.

I finally have pics of my 2 wheeled machines. The marin is obviously my pride and joy, and the peugeot is a retro racing machine!

the peugeot is a retro racing machine!

I was given half of an identical bike for my 15th birthday present (it was very second hand 15 years ago). I can remember my father lecturing me on how twitchy it was to ride and would I not prefere a less chipped and more shiny touring bike - some things never change :-)

Is it the full campag version? If yes then chop the bars off and invert them and use it off road, it really is a very strong frame and served me well on dirt. It also survived 3 years of heavy tow path use. After it was stolen I broke 6 bikes whilst chasing rowing boats from the tow path in a single term (frames, forks, bottom brackets - not counting buckled wheels).
