Just posting to give everyone a heads up on this event before we get wrapped up with the Nats;

Royal Lymington is my home club and they are VERY excited to be hosting the Cherub open on 12/13 Sept and looking forward to seeing our craft in action. The western solent is an attractive and interesting race area with ever changing conditions as the tide slackens, changes and speeds up again.

This is a joint open with Scoprpions, Larks, Fireflies & Merlins so should be a really good crowd. We will have our own start but will share a course. Race officer is happy to discuss our requirements, they will prob set a trapezium or triangle and we can choose to just do the w/l part if we want. But maybe it would be fun to do trapeziums for a change?

Bacon & sausage butty BBQ before racing both days, tea & cakes after. Prob a band at the club on the Sat evening.

My aim is to get as many to this event as go to the Nats 4 weeks earlier! So get it in your diaries! No lame excuses, it is going to be a biggie in Cherub history.

I live in Brockenhurst SO42 7UE (4 miles north of Lym) and can offer the whole fleet camping & floor space which will keep cost down. Catch up with me at the club on the Saturday or pm me if you want to come Fri if you dont see me before. 2009 Cherub Pool Knockout Championship will start at midnight.

If it suits anyone to detour to drop their boat off at my house on the way home from Nats or Carnac I have space to store it until this event.

Who's up for it?

Is this the target for E-numbers? "A little less conversation" will may also have a new name by then...
Even if that is not the case H&I plan to be there.

So long as I don't manage to trash my boat at the nationals then I will be there too! May as well try and have a good end to the season on the water as it's been pretty scarce so far.

It sounds excellent Pete, thanks for sorting out all the apres sail and offering plentiful accomodation. I know that with the whole 'credit crunch' and fuel prices a weekends sailing is getting expensive so it really is appreciated.

(Graham, I am sure that Eddie could grab a few hours kip beforehand if necessary... or maybe we'll just get straight on the voddy redbull after racing?!)

Great replies, based on above promises its already looking like the biggest open of the year - but we want to treble that. Come on out of the woodwork for fun weekend, whatever your generation of boat. Prizes for different generations of boats?

Eddie could challenge the winner for the Pool title in the morning, boxing style. He might have a bit of an advantage then!

I hope to be there with which ever boat is ready. must check the callender and make sure that Sarah isn't doing another byte event. I doubt E-numbers would be let out without her.

I need to get some sails sorted for E-numbers.

Getting very close to mast up but away for the next 5 days doing the RORC St malo race.

I sketched out the trolley design last night. So now to order the materials

So sorry Pete: it is getting perilous close to scary exam time, I made a deal with Wil that we'd do one day a weekend at Whitstable over the summer, the Nationals, Carnac and NOTHING ELSE!

I feel rather bad.

Shiny will be there!
I am boring but can we keep to w/l
Or we could do some long distance race if the conditions are good.
Nowhere better for a little surfing than the needles.
We have to be there, we can't let super crue Eddie and the old man beat us three times in a row.
Good luck to all for the Nationals.

Ok we are definitely in it sounds like we will have a super turnout.

Probably coming down Saturday am unless it's an early start.
Any ideas about a NOR?

We would be grateful for floor space Peter.

Looks Like E-numbers is still a little way off so we will have Slippery with us. All the sailing gets in the way of boat building.

Right, my plan is still to be there but there has been a recent spanner (or should i say tractor) thrown in the works!

So hopefully this will be fixed and I can come sailing!

A mere scratch Tim, slap a bit of carbon over it and it'll be fine.

Seriously though, if you get stuck we'll get you and the boat there somehow !

I can get me there I would have thought, but my boat is still in the dinghy park with the mast up at Babbacombe SC! Not sure I will have too many takers offering the 'minor' detour down there to get it for me  ::)

Still awaiting the garage to tell me how bad the damage is and whether they will repair it or pay out. (I hope for the first). Oh, and for the record, it wasn't me driving!

A fantastic sail!

We really enjoyed it but were absolutly shattered by the end of Sunday

Event report.

5 cherubs joined in with the Royal Lymmington Regatta and were rewarded with some exciting but challenging sailing. We were sailing alongside Merlin Rockets  and started with the scorpions in the PYS fleet.
The fleet had to first negociate the large ferries which take up most of the lymmington river when they come past the yacht club before sailing out to the race course but avoiding the shallows.

Saturday's sailing was all on the flood tide so with a north easterly the sea was choppy. The wind was a good 10-15 knots but was shifty and gusty for the venue. the course was a tide adjusted quadralateral.  The second and forth leg were sometimes deep enough to fly a kite but often proved to be a scarry 2 sail reach.
Ronin was first in all three races.  In race one Loco pero was in hot pursuit and pointing well upwind and going like the clappers down wind.  Shiny beast were also going well (without the t foil this weekend) to finish third.  Slippery When Wet had a few more capsizes and brouhgt up the rear. Well nearly.

The latest E-5 was launched by R and H. Despite a "to much positive t foil" issue their sea trials got them to the mouth of the river before turning back.  Nothing broke and there was prommise of some good performance.

the cherubs all made a better start in race two and appart from ronin arrived at the windward mark in closer order. The gybe proved too much of a challenge for Slippery who capsized.  Shiny beast had a problem with her kite system and retired to sort it out.  The tangle miraculously cleared when tried ashore but it was now too late to make the third race. Loco was doing well but not imune from aquahpobia and still close enough for Slippery to give chase.

on the second lap Loco headed up round the third mark in a gust and did a spectacular capsize.  Dean unfortunately went straight through the main and they were forced to retire.  Slippery seeing the incident cautiously dropped at the third mark and two sailed past into a safe second.

the third race was a straight two way fight between Ronin and Slippery. Ronin pulled off a port flyer crossing Slippery.  Slipery tacked to give chase and made good pace. They were rewarded with a lift enabling them stay in touch on the beat.  Ronin rounded the windward mark 50 yards ahead and left Slippery for dead.  the places didn't change beyond that point.

day two.

the prommise for a little less wind did not come true.  The wind built through the day.  Again the first race was a 4 boat affair. Slippery had advanced to third round the windward mark but nose dived on the bear away allowing Shiny through.   The second leg became a wild two sail reach.  All hoisted at the second mark.  loco capsized at the gybe giving hope to Shiny and Slippery who both made the same mistake.  The three boats stayed loosly in touch around the second lap behind Ronin.  it all went wrong again on the run although Slippery survived the gybe behind Loco  overtaking Shiny.  this advancement was short lived as a kite jam on the drop led to a long swim.  Shiny who was now becoming air borne on the bottom two sail reach flew past into third.

Only Ronin and Slippery lined up for race two.  Loco and shiny had sneaked back to shelter without anyone noticing.
Slippery was getting slowed by the steep chop  and quickly lost touch with Ronin.  This was compounded by a visiuos swerling gust which capsized them to windward.

because of the increasing wind and chop the bear aways were becoming scarry  and the kite legs worse. One nose dive had the bow the pole and the tack of the kite in the back of the next wave although the boat was still willing to charge on out the other side.

Both boats finished with a few capsizes.

Ronnin couldn't sail the final race due to child care commitments but slippery was determined to get a first so stuck it out.

Capsize one was next to the committee boat before the start, capsize two was on the first tack. The bear away went to plan.  the changes to technique worked.  Capsize three occured on the gybe and capsize four happened about 100 yards further on in an ther gust.  Slippery decided that another lap and a half like this would be too much and retired.  Ironically the race officer shortened the other fleets after 1 lap. So it goes to show you need to stick it out.

We all survived but we all ache a bit.

lymington was a great venue and worth keeping on the callender.

Thanks to the Barton's they are as good hosts as they are sailors.
Sunday has started a little debate in the Shiny crew, T foil or no Tfoil.
Whilst I have decided going slower without a tfoil is best, Basically I think getting good air Downwind is much more fun than going fast, Lara thinks that going fast is better and feeling like a frog isn't great.
The new Trim boat looks amazing.

I saw these and while I'm not too bothered we were a DNF in the last race and not a DNC. I would like to say that Ronin chickened out but they had a good excuse not to sail the last race.

You should bring EJ up to QMSC for a weekend for a play with her brother.  The launching and recovery are easy - we'll show you the technique, and you can kip over at ours if you fancy two days of excitement.
