A nice short hop in the boat? Rumors are that Loco has already entered, Born Slippy is definitely thinking of it.
-
I really like the idea of this race. Long distance races are so much more interesting than round the cans.
I am, however, paranoid about running aground and am therefore worried about the depth in some places around the course. I intend to have a chat with the organisers on this issue at Ally Pally.
-
With that new daggerboard you'd run aground in the shipping channel ;D On a more serious note we have done this race many times, and gone aground a few . However the rescue cover is good ,and the race is great. And yes unless the weather is really bad we will be going round.
-
is this the one where you have to carry the boat over the bridge or swim it under?
Sounds like a good race.
-
A simple matter of landing on the mainland, tilting the boat over to allow the mast to fit under the bridge. walk the boat to the other side underneath the bridge , get back on and sail.
-
so who is up for this i aim to be there?
-
I'm doing it in a borrowed wayfarer with my Dad!
-
We shall of course be there . This might be the only time we ever beat Dr. Lee ;D

This might be the only time we ever beat Dr. Lee ;D
We may have a serious lack of mast issue for this one. I think the good Dr May get the last laugh on Handicap.
2 weeks away from an event this should be a no-brainer, but the flat in Utrecht is too shiny for building a mast in. If I am lucky enough to get bird/pig/plane-flu between now and then things may change...
-
Simon, are you doing it in locco ?
-
Yes although we shall make a final decision on the day with regards to the weather ( we've never decided not to go yet )
-
Are you thinking of going round Graham?
-
Current plans are that we will be there, although rudder and stock are in the menders after developing some large cracks but I am expecting them back in time.
As with you Simon, weather dependant - can you tell me what time and where exactly I should pitch up ?
-
The start time for us is 11.00 am and if you head for the club there will be marshalls and signs. Usually cars with boats are asked to go further down the road towards town, then turn right up on to the prom. I don't know what your plans are after ,but I believe the club are sorting out curry ( the cherub effect?) . If you fancy a beer and want to kip over you would be welcome at mine.
-
We were going but the forecast is not so good.
Basically it is a long way for us to go and then back out.
Maybe next year!
Good luck to the Lee's,
See all of you at Lymington

Was utterly brilliant.

was a brillant sail indeed, sailed it in a friends b14, downwind was amazing, until the boat started sinking after somehow hitting the bottom 500m away from the shore :-\
didnt quite make it to the bridge!!
but at least the Captain(me) went down with his ship :D
Loco's, due to me having to spend the afternoon recovering the boat and not being able to get back to the club to collect my harness. Did you guys grab it for me? if so i'll collect it at lymington.

nice pic of team riot van

This was an incredible sail, had everything, 20-25kt downwind full on for 10 miles, big beat accross the estuary and interesting times getting to and under the bridge. We never had a hint of running aground although did have to do 2 tactical capsises to remove enormours clumps of weed from the T-foil !
Once again sheppey showed itself to be a freindly and hospitable club, I'll be there again next year, would be great to think it might become a bit of a cherub thing !

This is us and the other bosun. I can't synch them up - but you can adjust the sliders so we start together, which is what actually happened.
-
A bosun eh!
One of the most unchanged classes from the original design/layout in my experience. They only allowed hyfield levers in the mid 1990's after a rule change.
i have had the pleasure of sailing the quite heavy bosuns on three ocasions and notice that the weather/lee helm is very sensitive to heel angle due to the round bottom. more so than other boats I've sailed. Consequently they need a lot of wind to plane and when they do they kick up a lot of spray.
-
Yes - it was great. And slow!
I am not sure I believe the story of weather/lee helm and round bilges or hard chines. Some people think that it is chines which cause and some people think that it is round bilges which cause it! An explanation is the movement of the centre of drive of the rig over the centre of drag of the hull. Move the drive out to windward and the boat bears away. Move it to leeward and you are in Luffsville Tenessee.
If the Bosun's rudder load is v sensitive to heel, could it be down to the tall rig and the non-balanced rudder?
We have a great photo of the bow nearly going in IOR style, with much spray all around.
-
But when you are planning in something like a bosun or a wayfarer, at the incredible speeds of 7-8 knots, with sheets of spray everywhere you know it is going to take a lot to stop you.
-
I believe Eddie summed this one up best in one word AWESOME . From the start to shellness was a huge downhill blast with big waves and bigger wind, it took us 40 mins to cover the distance with riot van just behind us. On the beat up the Swale we pulled a little ahead only to stuff it in (wobbly leg syndrome), so we were close right up to the bridge. We got through ahead of the pack while Graham and Eddie were caught up as a windsurfer got stuck under a pontoon. It ended with a flat water downhill blast to the finish where we maxed out at 28.2 kmh. Results are a little optimistic as the club had us down for 975 but we were 4th, Riot van 14th, Will & dad 78th and James aka Ratface Davey jones' locker.
-
I'm gutted to have missed this one - conditions sounded great. I did it in a RS700 several years ago and have never managed to get back since.

Dean and Simon and Graham and Eddie:
Do you have your GPS tracks? Yours compared to ours would be v amusing!
-
Will I do have our gps track, however being a bit dim with computers I'm not sure how to put it on the website. If someone can let me know how ( in english) it would be interesting.
-
Errr, I know what II am doing with computers .... but dont own a GPS, so embarrassing ....
