I'm just sitting down to start sorting the 2009 events calender. This will include a travelers series/trophy. More details to come soon..
Now for the important bit.. I need to know what events You...Yes thats the members, you would like to see in the calender for 2009.
For me to organise this you'll need to post the following information for me in this thread.
- The Venue
- The Dates
- The Event Name
NO spam please all irrelevant posts will be deleted.
Thank you ;D
[/list]
-
Grafham Grand Prix- December
Tiger Trophy- First weekend of Febuary
I havn't done either but they sound good!
Post dinghy show blast- March
Weston Grand Slam- Easter
Kielder- Cold but definatly worth it if conditions are right.- April
Maybe a couple of sticky weekends
Training/coaching week/weekend(s)
-
Thornbury regatta.
I will check the dates with our club sailing sec. but suspect they haven't been firmed up quite yet.
we also have some long distance races which give some longer legs in both directions. They traditionally put 2 of these on a weekend. Before the nationals Tom and I did one from Thornbury to Sharpness and back (18 miles). It meant an hour of downwind sailing followed by and hour and a bit of upwind sailing helped by the tide in both directions.
-
We could have a sticky weekend in afew weeks time......to put my kitchen back in!?!? ;)
just kidding, anyway:
There is grafham asy slalom over the winter, or draycote winter series....
What about a couple of midlands-ish events - draycote? carsington? - i know the ICs have an event at carsington and struggle with numbers sometimes, could be a shared event?
Bala again for whit weekend?
Brightlingsea? Whitstable? Shoreham?
It just seems that as a fleet we always go to Weston (which is usually a good event), but maybe needs mixing up a bit??
-
Kielder- Cold but definatly worth it if conditions are right.- April
Condition 1) Ross drives up with a boat on the roof and a triple stacker.
Condition 2) Scantily clad...
Maybe I should start a new thread
On a serious note Kielder was excellent and I'd definitely vote for going.
-
Kielder was my favourite event of the season. 3 back to back races followed by a long distance race on saturday?! Now that's what I call a proper days sailing!!
-
Medway Regatta is 11/12th July 09.
Accomodation, at least one 2 mile kite run and a T-shirt included with the entry fee.
2008 was £4 per race which for us worked out at under 20p per capsize !
-
I would vote for a few new events in the midlands or east especially if these are areas where the class is represented.
it appears that there are a lot of options available to us and all sound fun. Question is what is a reasonable number of events to expect people to turn up to. (My thought is too many events and we will have fewer sailing at each). Do we want a core circuit of events that we need or want a good turn out for and if so how do we incentivise these?
-
Phil, all will be revealed with the new travellers series soon. there will be less events and less handicap opens on the calender. I hope to have it all sorted and online in the next few weeks.
-
I should be able to find a date for the Thornbury Regatta once I can get a copy of the 09 Tide tables, hopefully I'll have them by the end of the 1st week of October. I'll let you know as soon as I do.
If you want it as part of your travellers circuit and can guarentee at least 6 boats then I can give you your own start or as per this year we can run you in with the fast handicap and I can break out the results from there.
Cheers

I know its another one at Bala but the long distance race is quite good, Saturday is a fleet start race to the top of the lake and back usually 2-3 laps of the 4-6 mile course. The Sunday is a double time pursuit race (not fun if you're in a mirror). Usually the same weekend as the Lord Birkett which has good and bad points, bad being the Birkett is obviously a lot more prestigious but good being that there are a lot less boats around which is good for those of us not to happy about 200 boat start lines

Can we have less at Weston!
I like the place but our open and the Easter Regatta is enough.
The rest of the south coast has venues too.

i FULLY agree :)

Stokes Bay is considered by most (me included) as the best sailing venue on the Solent. You can sail at all stages of the tide and all year round, it's clean and the wind is steady. Day membership is about £5. Racing is 1 Sat, 2 back to back Sunday and there is an asymmetric fleet which means windward leeward courses.
The club would not host a Cherub open as there are insufficient boats (unless teamed up with another class). But sailors could just turn up for a weekend.
-
Blast weekend at Stokes anyone? ;D
-
There is the sheppey island race this is an open meeting for all comers date not posted yet.
Around the end of august beginning of september depending on tide

To be fair we, as a class, only organise to have one event at Weston. As this is one of the few clubs in the country actually willing to put on an event for us, I suggest we keep it up.
The other 2 events at Weston, the Grand Slam and the Skiff Regatta are handicap events that just so happen to be well attended by Cherubs. And this is another reason to have events at Weston because they always get a good turnout.
Couple this with:
- friendly club
- big, open, flat-ish, not too tidal piece of water
- wward/lward courses
- big grassy patch of grass to rig on (or sleep on)
- local cherubers with floor space
- exciting evening entertainment
- close to the modal centre of Cherub Sailors

Thats all well and good, and get what your saying....I think people were just saying that they think we should make more of an effort to go to different clubs, rather than doing loads of events at weston
Which is fine for those further south, but gets expensive for others after a while...but also, just to mix it up abit, and poss attract more people to the class by going to different places. It works both ways, if clubs see all we ever do is go to weston they arent going to go out of there way to put an event on for us, the class needs to build relationships with other clubs as well as weston.
-
So what are you saying? That the class should give up the event it organises at Weston every year? Or that people should stop going to the Grand Slam and Skiff Regatta?
-
Neither. The open there was fantastic and the other two are great events Slippy's plan is to be at all three next year. As such I'd like to see all 3 in the diary, but only one in a "travelers series" and booked not to clash.

I agree with your position Roland.
Weston is a great place to sail but there are other venues in the country near to some cherubers that we should try to include.
I vote in favour of keeping our open because it is a good event where we get class racing alongside similar speed classes and it is relatively straight forward to maintain a regular fixture.
By including other events we increase awareness of the class, provide some boats with a more local event and other sailors with greater variety of sailing venues.
Many classes have a traveler's circuit and other events and I would support trying this concept in our class. I'm sure Stu will put together a great fixtures programme for 2009 and we should support his efforts when asked for.

I think you have completely misunderstood what I've written there......
And as Roland said, Neither......
-
How many events should a travelers series have? 2 day events or one day? Rather than just saying 'less at Weston', maybe give some ideas as to where we should have these events.
I think we should have 'premier' and 'secondary' events. This is what the IC's do. Premier events are where it's our open meeting (weather shared or not) and these would count to the travelers series. Secondary events are open handicap events such as the Weston Grand Slam and the Skiff Open where you can expect other Cherubs to turn up. The nationals would be a 'premier' event but would not count towards the travelers obviously.
Maybe we should have a prize for the boat that turns up to the most events, wether premier or secondary. This would encorage more people to go to events! Something good like a custom fit harness. They would deserve it for the dedication. They'll probobly need it after all the hardcore Cherubing they would be doing!
PS, we should call the travelers series the 'Nomad series'. It sounds so much better ;D
-
Keilder is an excellent event and great club, it would get my vote for next year, I also enjoyed Sunderland this year, although I would like to sail a bit more if we went back.
The Cumbraes Regatta on the August bank holiday up at Largs is great fun, including the round Cumbraes race on the Sunday

Chill and wait and see what stu has planned :) ....he would prob reply himself, but he has a kitchen ceiling to put up :)

I'm just confused by "less events at Weston". Which of the 3 events at Weston would you like to give up?
Anyway, point passed. Don't worry about it.

No one is saying give up events Stu, you really arent reading whats been written correctly.....just saying that we need to have other events else where around the country to the same profile as events at Weston, hence Hoppys travellers series idea etc to get the fleet to some different places.
And as outlined have our one main event at Weston down as an event "to count", doesnt stop people going to the other weston events at all. Think some people just want more of a range of locations for events.
-
"Less events at Weston" could hardly be any more unambiguous.
-
I like the sound of a 'primary' travellers series. Suggest not too many events, 4-5?, so that people can prioritise & therefore better turnout at each event. Other events can be 'secondary' - ie. recommended for a gathering of Cherubers.
One thought I had this year was that many of the venues were on the outer perifiterole reaches of the Cherub population, easy for some but not most. A few more central locations would make it a more maneageable drive for everybody. Eg; Draycote, Farmoor, Datchet, Queen Mary, Chew, Grafham. Event sharing is the way in - and fun for meeting the other classes too.
I agree one series event at Weston and the EasterGS & Skiff open can be Cherub 'secondary' extras. On the secondary list I would recommend Bloody Mary QM Jan, Tiger Trophy Rutland Feb, Glyn Charles Pursuit Hayling May, Lord Birkett Ullswater July. They are all good big events to show our classs off at and the handicap events (as opposed to pursuit) will help us produce an official class PY.
-
I was at IOSSC at the weekend and spoke to some of the members there, who said they might be able to
join a cherub event with an osprey event to get the numbers.
With regards to weston I would like to still have a cherun open there and if I can make the other open events there even better.
-
We have a provisional date for the 2009 nationals at Babbacoombe YC (torquay). Event starting on Wed 5th August. Race format- Wed 3 races,Thurs & Fri 4 races and Sat 3 races (windward, leeward).
Just starting to work out the open meetings calender for 2009 now.
-
Great work Stu and co.
I don't doubt the amount of work involved in getting to this point.
I am going to have a bit of a road trip on the weekend of 8th -9th August then and will have to miss the Saturday. (sister's wedding). Fastnet race starts on the Sunday 9th. I can't complain about 2 weeks of solid sailing though.
-
well i wont be there clashes with the miracle nats next year.
-
We went there in 1996 or 1997. It was great: Phil explained his behaviour to a policeman, beer got on the ceiling and we slept atop a minibus. On the way back we blew up a clutch and got a tow all the way to Aberdeen.
I remember colliding with a leeward mark such that it handily pushed the pole in, and it being really really sunny.
I had LFC in those days!

Unfortunately I don't think I will get to try my luck with the local constabulary again, I can't do those dates.
-
Neither can I, Cowes week... which a few of the class might also be doing.
-
even though i don't own a cherub * i wont be able to crew for anyone then as will be blasting around in the solent racing on 14ft, however if i was to become free for some unknown reason. what would the chances of being 'loaned' a boat to use for the event be?
*yet
-
Did I miss something?
What happened to Scotland?
-
So Thornbury SC Regatta will be May 30 & 31st.
Phil & Sarah the challenge is on. Will E-numbers be ready in time.
Great attendance last year so looking forward to an other great Cherub turnout.
If you can put it in the traveller series that would be really good.
Cheers
Paul

perhaps we should try and pull the nationals forward a week so we race sat sun mon tues, thus meaning no clash with cowes week or fastnet race plus other events, and people will only need 2 days off work.
just my 2p's worth
roker dinghy regatta is 22nd and 23rd of august if we have enough cherubs we will get our own start.
-
...and the handicap events (as opposed to pursuit) will help us produce an official class PY.
They don't do that much to help. As I understand it the drivers for PY credibility are number of races particpated in and consistency between clubs. What makes more difference than anything else is to get out every weekend at your club and make sure the club does an RYA return. 4 big handicap events doesn't add any more value for the PY system than the same number of boats doing 4 weekends of club racing... So get out there folks!
-
Sure - but lets do both! Whilst club races may count as much for PY, the big events show off our class publically. If we can show our boats to be exciting and with good turnouts to a big audience we will tempt in new recruits - especially now there is clear way of competitive entry to the class with the Bloodaxe E5s and Aardvark Banshees.
So for diaries, something to be going on with in anticipation of the 2009 calendar;
28 Dec - Grafham Grand Prix, GrafhamSC
10 Jan - Bloody Mary, Queen MarySC
7/8 Feb - Tiger Trophy, RutlandSC
We are on for the latter two.
-
Any thoughts on another training week like last year it was brilliant espcially the coaching with Peter on the Wednesday. As it turnes out it was the most i sailed all year! (I must do better) I hope to do some more events this year but i'm just praying that they don't all fall on my weekend on (i.e. every other one!) and i hope my crew still wants to sail as i've only seen him twice since feb last year!
-
Dean and I would be very interested in another training week. Last year was a great reason to get out of the garage and onto/into the water.
-
We will want to show the list of events at the dinghy show.
A practice week at a similar time of year will be a good point to encourage interested newbies to join us and have a go see the boats and make contacts with the class.
