Hi forum.
i was just wondering if anyone has any idea what the oldest usable cherub is in the uk?
In the boats section on the cherub class web page according to sail no's shows these boats before mine which is :- Name: Suspense
Designs: Spencer 2e / McCutcheon 3

obviously some of those boats are as quoted 'in the sky' now :'( but i was wondering if anyone has any record or idea of which of these boats still exist if in the uk or which is the oldest surviver?
Also why the big jump from 126 to 691 which is my boat?
any ideas ????

Hi Rick,
For a long time the oldest Cherub still actually sailing in the UK was thought to be Wanderous 698. So, if your sail number of 691 is accurate and you get her on the water, you may qualify for the oldest boat title! I'm guessing 691 dates from about 1960, possibly a year or so earlier. The sail numbers were up to 750 in 1963, then jumped to 901 due to batches of numbers being allocated to different countries. This probably explains the jump from the 100's to the 600's in the late 50's.

Is there any way of gaining some provenence for my cherub through archives ect? ???
I really love the old girl and would love to find more on her history, according to the records on the website she was built by boatbuilder William(Bill) McCutcheon who i believe worked on the isle of white and is a Spencer 2e design.
any thoughts guys????

I'm moderately sure that two figure numbered British boats were a UK only series starting at 1, and were renumbered when the International Association was formed and we starting using a common series with AUS and NZ. Some dim memory suggests that 1 went to 601 or maybe 651, but I'm not at all certain. What's in the register? 22 has been active in the last 10 or 15 years BTW.

well that would really make sense why the sudden jump in numbers in the late 1950's so i guess my boat being a true 691 could be either boat number 41 or 91 being built in the uk depending on what number the jumped to when we started using a common series with AUS and NZ.
is there a register archived anywhere which can be viewed online?

An old paper copy of a boat register was still in the archives when I passed it on. That would surely have some info.

I don't have access to the files, but I do have a list of most of the UK boats from the beginning of the class up to about 2010. Not sure how much help it will be, but here it is. By cross-referencing with some of the old Nationals Reports in the History section of the website, you can get some idea of the age of the boats.
