Title: Alverbanks Cherub Sail Prices and Info **WARNING CONTAINS LOTS OF PICTURES**
Post by: Debi on August 08, 2008, 04:36:54 PM
Right, a few people have been asking myself and Hoppy, so here are some prices for shiny new cherub sails, they are rough prices based on using Pentex laminate (which is the cloth Atums new sails are made from - pictures will be put up after sailing this sunday!)

ODL06 cloth is available too, but is more expensive, so I would recommend phoning for a price on that one.

Main
£600
has 5 Full battens, Wide head, radial head and clew

Jib
£290
Fully battened, radial head and clew

Asy
TBC

All sails can be supplied to fit our own rig geometry, Kevan is a master at this due to his work with the National 12 fleet, as they order their sails in this way.

Alverbanks phone number is 01332 342586
email is [email protected]

If you have any questions just phone or email and ask  ;D

They look REALLY good. Very similar to the Lee's Fyfes. How long is the square top?

Debi designed and made the pattern a few weeks ago, just taken a bit to get round to making them as Alverbanks have been so busy (She did a lot of work in the evenings with my help). They might appear similar but they look pretty typical of Alverbanks style and I know she decided on a square head and the leech profile before seeing anyone elses sails, it was more through discussion with Tim and myself.  8)  They arent full radial like the fyfes, they are radial foot and head, with cross cuts to work with the cloth and produce a better responding sail.

As for dimensions: The head is about 1m wide, the foot is about 2m wide, with a pretty straight leech.

Unfortunately it was a bit too breezy to get any decent pictures today, but they looked good on the boat and Debi and Kevan played about with settings and battens.

Thats what I did today. I restrung FS and played around with my new control systems. Playing around with controls with the boat in it's side is a really good way to get an idea of how your sail and mast is behaving. With the boat up right you can't get a real good look at it.

They are the sailings answer to alloy wheels and massive spoiler. Looks really good though. If you can get the leech tension set they should be quick too.
Everyone thought the Red eye had a massive roach lol.

I thought Noyce's upturned t-foil was the answer to a massive spoiler. ;D

the sails should look and be even better now...when the pictures were taken the battening in them was too stiff, wanted to go sailing and the batten hadnt arrived, but it has now :)

Cant wait to got sailing on sat/sunday :)

Just out of interest what would it cost to have a new main made for Flat Stanley?

For a 1991 set of sails I would suggest looking for a second hand one. Graham Dickenson has one I think, and the class had one but it has just gone to a good home. What happened to Suicides yellow main, Neal? Or Cheeses one Paul? LFCs 1991 main was seriously knackered. It'sll be compatible because they all had the same luff in those days. Slippery when wet may have a set too but tiny people sometimes like to hang on to their tiny sails.

I'm planning on keeping the old one and re building the batten pockets anyway. Ross says he is going to give me the number for someone who has some 91 rules sails so may get in contact with him.

Get in touch with Phil, Rob. He has a set of pretty much identical Batt's from Kipper at a good price.

Not quite all Will, Norwegian Blue, Madge Allsop (and maybe Taking Liberties, I'm not sure)  were built with shorter luff lengths, but the vast majority will have been on the 18ft maximum luff length. So best to check.

I do'nt think Slippery's 91 rules main will be a step forward.  I took it out of the bag once and believe that it would require a few repairs.

The older 97 rules sail was completly delaminated so went in the bin.

If you have the money spare after the buy then a new set of sails for the old man could be a fitting touch, might also be worth contacting Laurence - he has just done a similar job to Sgt. Murphy (AKA Last amber Dragon).

i'll try and sort you out a quote in the next few days (i have the week off work to rewire the house so may take a day or so) what do you want sail plan wise, 91's, laminate/dacron, really pimp or on a budget? square top or rounded?  8)

Probably as much area as is humanly possible on a 91 rules mast. Would have thought a fully battened laminate sail with a rounded head. but im no expert.

91 rules jib made from dacron (fully battened) would cost £230

91 rules main made from dacron (fully battened) would cost £500

91 rules main made from pentex (same stuff as atums main) would cost £530

Thats all fully tailored to fit the boat properly.
