After an excellent first year in the cherub fleet having attended most of the events. And fully been getting into the cherub spirit having continued to fix and rebuild the boat every time it went out for at least the first half of the year.
I find myself with a long jobs list for the winter of fixing improving and updating Madge ready for another season of abuse. I figured I would track the progress, hopefully not the lack of, here on the forum for all to see and keep the motivation up.
Got a few bits to address with Madge, the main one being the amount of water getting inside the tanks, and the soft floor which has caused a few fittings over the season to break free. - likely related to the cracks in the outer skin or the holes/cracks elsewhere in the boat.
Things on the optional extras list would be fixing the de-laminated areas of the hull, sealing and curing the cracks in the outer skin, simplifying the rigging and some performance improvements such as T-foil, larger sails for when there are less 97 rules boats around.
So Ive got some things on the shopping list if anyone wants to part with some let me know via PM or something and Ill sort out some money for you.
- 05 upwind and downwind sails or just larger than 97 rules
- carbon! - tubes ideally
- Tiller Extensions for twin wiring
And a picture of madge sailing before changes.

First jobs were to clean and remove all the fittings and rigging on the boat.
So to start with this is what she looked like after a season of use.

Can you spot the delam in this one? :(

Next up was to start the sanding back, I wanted to sand back most of the hull, one reason was to sort out some the delam and cracks the other reason was that madge has a very rough finish and it was making me sad looking at everyone's glossy and clean looking boats!
So it begins
(http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj143/kerrgreg2111/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0136_zpssv6mwwnq.jpg) (http://s271.photobucket.com/user/kerrgreg2111/media/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0136_zpssv6mwwnq.jpg.html)

(http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj143/kerrgreg2111/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0144_zpsuiw58pmq.jpg) (http://s271.photobucket.com/user/kerrgreg2111/media/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0144_zpsuiw58pmq.jpg.html)
This was quite interesting, there was lots of black paint, but under that I found white, blue red and yellow paint not sure how many pictures there are floating around of madge, but shes certainly been a few colours in the past. In some places the black was very thick and took allot of work but most of that paint was off in about 5hours of work today with the air sander and some 80grid pads.
-
Great work. Madge was white when she was first launched, but that's a few years ago now!
-
Next thing on the list was to work out why there were so many cracks in the front of the boat, these are all in the outer skin forward of the shrouds.
Since the Allen inspection hatch was in an inaccessible place, and wouldn't open I opted to make my own inspection hatch, in the end I did manage to force the Allen hatch open and will likely cut it out and seal it up before the start of next season.
Convertible!

I had to open the bow, which I had filled with holes during an adventure up their at the nationals, and then opened up the bow tank to have a look around. What I found I think explains the cracking.
(http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj143/kerrgreg2111/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0110_zps5twahayt.jpg) (http://s271.photobucket.com/user/kerrgreg2111/media/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0110_zps5twahayt.jpg.html)
Half sized bulkhead....
(http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj143/kerrgreg2111/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0125_zpsazvr5sw4.jpg) (http://s271.photobucket.com/user/kerrgreg2111/media/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0125_zpsazvr5sw4.jpg.html)
Which you might be able to see is also rotten since it wasnt sealed by its previous owner.. and that rots all the way from the tanks surface to the hull.
(http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj143/kerrgreg2111/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0109_zpsaz3qmirq.jpg) (http://s271.photobucket.com/user/kerrgreg2111/media/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0109_zpsaz3qmirq.jpg.html)
Here you can see the king post, which although looks fine, there is no bulkhead between here and the half one or much/any support for the hull forward of this, other than the previous mentioned half sized bulkhead.
As such I think this explains which the joins in the outer-skin panels have been splitting, so hopefully some reinforcement and additional strengthening there should then help the rest of the bow stay rigid.
-
Great work. Madge was white when she was first launched, but that's a few years ago now!
Thanks Neil, that does fit what I found in a very few small areas.
Easy bits done so far, much more to do! Hopefully can be done in time for re-launching in march.
-
Outstanding work. Always seems to take more than you think, but should be so worth it.
-
Yep, Madge was white when new (1990 Torquay Nationals) and built to a very restricted budget as I recall. May even have been polyester, not epoxy.
I would be astonished if Simon Roberts hadn't varnished or epoxied internal wood, but that was 26 years ago. Inside the tanks on a self draining boat, especially a basically foam sandwich boat appears to be the perfect breeding ground for rot, suppose its never really dry. I once reached into the hull of a Int Canoe and pulled out bulkhead mush with my fingers.
-
Yep, Madge was white when new (1990 Torquay Nationals) and built to a very restricted budget
Nevertheless, the build quality was very good. I crewed in Madge briefly in early 1991. At that time she seemed to be a real state of the art, shiny new racing boat which was very well finished. A bit of a contrast to Flat Stanley which I crewed in later the same weekend. Stanley was still competitive and a true Cherub icon, but even Guy Lewington referred to him as a bit of a shed by comparison.
-
Got to agree that the build seems to be great considering 26 years later she is still going strong and only has minor issues, likely due to water ingress.
-
The build does look really good, looks like it was built with a lot of care.
When we did the rebuild on Comfortably Numb, I sanded for Days and Days using a random orbital sander with 40 or 60 grit to remove the layers. I kept going until there was no paint left so I knew that I was back to ground level. As with yours, there were many different colours to work through. I just saw it as a kilo per colour and used that as inspiration to keep going!
-
I'm wondering if the half bulkhead is associated with handling spinnaker pole loads, and might be a later addition. The Torquay report suggests Madge was originally rigged with a pole kite, but I don't recall if she was built with a tube for a sprit as well. Its certain that the snout is a retrofit since it wasn't legal in 1990.
Certainly my Bistro had no bulkheads between mast and bow, and I'm not surprised Madge is the same. If she was built of polyester, as I have a vague memory may have been the case, then surface cracking round the bow area might simply be the material showing its age in that high load area.
She was, BTW, mainly built by (IIRC) Simon Roberts for Will Perrett.
-
I can confirm that the snout was added between 2010 and 2015 when Nick Pratt owned Madge, before 2010 the previous owner had it rigged with an asym pole coming out the starboard side. I guess that you could be right as it seems that the half bulkhead need trimming to allow the new longer pole and snout to fit, it was made of marine ply by the looks of things.
Im inclined to agree that the cracking is predominately where panels appear to join, looking from the inside.
Thanks for your input Jim, its really interesting hearing the stories and piecing together the history. - Does anyone have any pictures from back in the early 90's when Madge was racing? Preferably including Madge so I can add it to my collection of history
-
I can't find any photos unfortunately. I remember Will Perrett sailing Madge at the legendary '92 Rock Nationals, but I seem to recall he them went out to work in Australia for a while and Madge dropped off the radar for a few years. I've no idea where Will is now, or whether he ever came back to the uk. Anybody know more?
-
regarding longer tiller extensions. Get down your local fishing shop and ask for carp rod butts or really any similar rods with broken tips. Our local shop had a selection out the back and we took our pick. One shop charged me £5 each but the other shop just gave me 3 or 4 for free. Strip them down, put a golf grip on and you are good to go. We are still using one original rod (the codfather) after 8 seasons of abuse.
-
The Cod Fathers are excellent. I also had some 'Carp Thief' ones which were good.
As a basic rule, go into your local fishing shop and buy the one with the best name!
-
Thanks Chaps, ill see what I can find.
In the mean time here is a picture from the nationals this year showing how parts of Madge looked while on the water.

I much prefer a cheese roll.

If I were to have a roll choice, it was would be Marmite and Cheese, before bedtime. No one wants to wake up hungry.

Yes! where abouts are you?

I managed to get some work done over the last weekend and also bought some covers for Madge which I test fitted.
First one was an RS200 undercover which seems to fit the Bistro really well, only bit that really needs adjusting is the bow to fit around the snout.

Next up was to continue with removing sections of the floor to replace and strength the bulkheads. Ive been strongly considering stumping and framing the boat to help with the strengthening process. also putting a center-line structure in the bow to help keep the bow from folding up or twisting.

Ive been trying to trim up and tidy as much of it as possible but there is still alot of work to do and until Ive arranged finalized the stump Im not sure how things will be finished.

This weekend Madge visited Frensham boat works, cut out all the old bow bulk heads and started creating new ones which will help support the loads in the future. picture is version one of a centre line bulkhead and then add a couple more supporting pieces to build it out. That will be vacum bagged with carbon and bonded in.
(http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj143/kerrgreg2111/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/received_10154664689150861_zpswj2cop0n.jpeg) (http://s271.photobucket.com/user/kerrgreg2111/media/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/received_10154664689150861_zpswj2cop0n.jpeg.html)
Also measured up the bow to stern length and found that Madge is a little short so there is some water line length to be added, this seems to be common on the bistros and rumour is that this was due to a rule change around metric from imperial conversion.
-
Correct. The rule used to be max length 12 feet. This was changed to max length 3.7m as part of the '97 Rules set, to make things easier to calculate for modern day builders. That's why you will find a small wedge added to the transom of a lot of '91 Rules boats like the Bistro's. Dave Roe calculated that the extra waterline length would add enough extra speed to gain you something like 50m iirc in the course of an average 1 hour race.
-
Some great ideas on show here:
- basin for hand washing when sailing in dodgy water
- butter in case the non-slip is a bit too effective, and
- cling film as a low-cost undercover.
Why didn't I think of that?
-

Another day of sticking over the weekend and here are the results.
(http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj143/kerrgreg2111/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0341_zpsewh8pdvn.jpg) (http://s271.photobucket.com/user/kerrgreg2111/media/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0341_zpsewh8pdvn.jpg.html)
One white cloth vacuum bagged a day later turned into this!
(http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj143/kerrgreg2111/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0345%20%202_zpsaxhgrvx4.jpg) (http://s271.photobucket.com/user/kerrgreg2111/media/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0345%20%202_zpsaxhgrvx4.jpg.html)
and abit of upcycling here to reuse some off cuts and provide some additional support in the mast foot area, the idea here is to help brace the sub-deck level around the mast foot loads and with the box bulkhead which will run in line with the bow it should help support the bananna'ing that its been doing recently. It hopefully also will help take the load from mast compression so all that is not directly placed onto the centreboard casing as it currently is.
(http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj143/kerrgreg2111/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0343_zps6t5yvndb.jpg) (http://s271.photobucket.com/user/kerrgreg2111/media/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0343_zps6t5yvndb.jpg.html)
Its amazing how much time is consumed by prep work and waiting for things to cure. Hoping to speed up progress but at this point not sure when the boat will be back on the water.
-
Another day spent in Frensham boat works means more pictures for the mad house.
Horizontal bulkhead trimmed down to size, roughly, and bogged into place, this runs under the kite pole and up over the current centerline bulkhead, the idea being here to provide strength down the bow to prevent the current banana effect and by overlaping both the pole tube and the stump/mastfoot area the strengthing will help to support all these areas to prevent flex.
This was my first big attempt at filleting bog and once set I plan to lay carbon tape over these joins to provide a bigger bonding surface. there likely will be allot of overlap here and onto the middle main bulkhead as I plan to carbon wrap that also to help preserve it for years to come, and obviously keeping it strong too.
(http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj143/kerrgreg2111/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0350_zpsj3ldmh1i.jpg) (http://s271.photobucket.com/user/kerrgreg2111/media/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0350_zpsj3ldmh1i.jpg.html)
At the bow end the bulkehead goes under the current pole tube arrangement, its a sung fit so the pole shouldn't collapse onto the bulkhead and in turn hopefully this will help hold the bow end together with the center-line panel. I upcycled a couple other bits I had lying around to provide lateral support up front and left the bottom open to allow any leaks to run out (hoping this isnt the case) this also helped to ensure that everything was true or at least close to that.
(http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj143/kerrgreg2111/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0349_zpsqsvwhott.jpg) (http://s271.photobucket.com/user/kerrgreg2111/media/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0349_zpsqsvwhott.jpg.html)
Finally here is the overall shot, lots of extra material here to trim down where required since the top of the bow tank is not finalised.
(http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj143/kerrgreg2111/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/07eba6f7-dc9e-47e8-902c-368e075f0a6e_zpsipouy5fw.jpg) (http://s271.photobucket.com/user/kerrgreg2111/media/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/07eba6f7-dc9e-47e8-902c-368e075f0a6e_zpsipouy5fw.jpg.html)

Couple more updates over the last couple weeks, not a huge amount has been happening, but things are making progress.
I tried my hand at going solo on making some floor panels, these were 10mm Gruit PVC foam with a layer of 200g 3K Twill weave on each side. Vacuum bagged to a glass table about the size of the foam sheet which was a massive pain in the arse to seal.
(http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj143/kerrgreg2111/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0369_zpse1neqk8v.jpg) (http://s271.photobucket.com/user/kerrgreg2111/media/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0369_zpse1neqk8v.jpg.html)
All bagged up

tried that wrapped in electrical tape, but sellotape works much better for not sticking to the product.

Couple weekends further on and not much to report. lots of shopping and discussions but not much action.

Does anyone know of someone around in the Portsmouth Southampton area who can re-crimp shrouds?
-
Madge is back from Frensham boat works and Im trying to keep plugging away at things, knowing that Im unlikely to have her finished for another couple months yet.
Spent some time on Saturday between shower spells washing away any left over dirt or carbon and removing excess bog from various bits of the hull skin. Then got stuck into taping the joints with 50mm carbon weave tape which was so nice and easy to use compared to the twill I've been using on the foam.

This was really messy at times, and I was not sure how it was going to come out.

At first glance in the dark it was looking ok.

Wow - Last updates in March and its nearly July now!
OK so spent a few hours on Madge tonight, not allot to report but got a load of prep done, and some bits bogged into place ready for the next steps.
Main thing to report is the first of the floor panels has been cut and sized ready to go in, the support for it on the hull has been bogged on so I should be able to set the floor in maybe as soon as tomorrow.

Hoping to get Madge back and ready for the Nats and in one form or another that should be possible.

Another lovely day to get back into the cherub work, most of the day this time.
First thing I did was cleaning up some of the excess bog which was left over from Thursdays sticking.
This one was from where ive been building up the edges around the carbon tubes to then have more material to bond onto.
(http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj143/kerrgreg2111/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0596_zps9p5xtqyw.jpg) (http://s271.photobucket.com/user/kerrgreg2111/media/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0596_zps9p5xtqyw.jpg.html)
These are some floor supports

Then laid up some more uni-tape onto the stump and surrounding areas in an effort to make it stronger.
(http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj143/kerrgreg2111/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0604_zps1jo9q4mp.jpg) (http://s271.photobucket.com/user/kerrgreg2111/media/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0604_zps1jo9q4mp.jpg.html)
A few hours later that looked something like this.
(http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj143/kerrgreg2111/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0606_zpsi771emb6.jpg) (http://s271.photobucket.com/user/kerrgreg2111/media/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0606_zpsi771emb6.jpg.html)
The I moved onto wrapping the first of carbon onto the tube reinforcements. This was done with what i think is 300g/m3 weave which I got from Andy (ex -evadexoff)

Again a few hours later the bag was off and it looked more like this: (http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj143/kerrgreg2111/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0614_zps6jqq17yj.jpg) (http://s271.photobucket.com/user/kerrgreg2111/media/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0614_zps6jqq17yj.jpg.html)
While that was curing, I moved over to floor pannels again:
(http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj143/kerrgreg2111/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0612_zpsgqjc7ifn.jpg) (http://s271.photobucket.com/user/kerrgreg2111/media/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0612_zpsgqjc7ifn.jpg.html)
Yes it fits!!
Ok so now some supports for that side.
(http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj143/kerrgreg2111/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0618_zpsxrod7iel.jpg) (http://s271.photobucket.com/user/kerrgreg2111/media/Madge%20-%20Cherub%20-%20GBR2646/DSC_0618_zpsxrod7iel.jpg.html)
And some other boring bits such as building up some of the snout.

Hi
I was the first owner of Madge Allsop, as she was then known. White she was originally, with blue and yellow trim (floor, etc.) She was built originally with a hole for a pole, though we started with a big conventional kite - quickly realised the mistake and rigged a sprit and assymetric. I seem to remember that she was a polyester boat, which won't have helped the longevity! Simon Roberts was a good builder in parts - like the curate's egg! She seemed stiff enough in the first few seasons, but he stuffed a rudder extension on the back made of wood dowling, wrapped in a bit of carbon, which fell off in about the third race of the first series we did: Torquay 1990. I quote from the report: "Slightly further back Will & Nigel, who had been well placed, were disentangling the remains of a jellyfish from the remains of their rudder gantry, and summoning a rescue boat for a tow home." The Moth replacement gantry did the trick, however. I think I may have one or two photos of Madge, but they will be on bits of paper, and finding them and scanning the findings is not what I want to do! I think our best result was 3rd in 1991 at Lee-on-Solent.

Awesome! Thanks for the insight Will. This is a clear example of why the forum is awesome.

'This is a clear example of why the forum is awesome.'
Yes.
Nice to know that Ex Cherub sailors never really leave the class.

Hi Will,
Great to hear from you. You were kind enough to look after me and give me a go in your boat at my first ever Cherub event - a training weekend at Lee-on-Solent in April 1991. I was on a short student attachment on the IoW at the time and you picked me up off the ferry iirc. I remember Madge looking like a real state of the art racing machine. It turned into a fairly epic weekend of sailing and wild antics with Biffa and all the boys. I was hooked on the class after that! So, many thanks for your kindness back then and glad to hear you're still to the fore.
I too value the forum in a big way, even though I haven't sailed a Cherub for a few years. It's a real asset to the class.

Wow awesome little step into history there. Thanks Will
Sadly Madge isn't really developing at all this year and needs to really find some more love - if someone is keen to take her on then Id be open to any interested parties.
Otherwise I'll do my best to get her back sailing.

Hi Will,
I remember those Champs at Torbay well, especially the jellyfish!! And Mr Everest's radical looking Moth!! If my memory is correct, prior to Madge you owned the varnished Iain Murray boat was it 2609?? For the youngsters on here that was a good looking boat way before anyone had seen clearcoat carbon!!
The Forum is awesome for us ex-cherub sailors keen to keep up with what's going on in the class.

So the time has come...
Im at the point of letting this go to a new home or breaking it for parts. Everything anyone would need to make a 05's or 97's boat from this project is listed up in the classifieds https://www.uk-cherub.org/forum/index.php/topic,2371.0.html (https://www.uk-cherub.org/forum/index.php/topic,2371.0.html)
Thanks!
