After this weekends blasting about at QM, I find my crew needs more grip on the decks of madge and in the cockpit.
What are people using and find works well?
When I looked around the boat park I saw some progrip type stuff and some people had some foam stuff that looked like neoprene. The neoprene option didnt look like it held up so well, but it was hard to tell how old it was.
-
The stuff on EJ is a mistake - has a de-bonding agent in it and is way too thin :-(
Progrip - there is a similar thing from Algeos. If you ask them what was ordered by Harbour Wall - BS1 6JZ in their last order (2mm thick) then that stuff is fairly good to work with aboutb £20 for a 1.2x1.8m sheet
I'd welcome what others are using :-)
-
Andy, did you mention some 2.5mm stuff at the weekend?
-
This stuff. We still have the 3mm on our racks after 7 years use. Only replaced it on our deck as it got a small tear. Don't buy the 1mm.

Thanks Andy,
Do you have to glue this stuff? From what Ive read there is glue required to stick it.
-
Yes you do. Trial and error as to what works best. Wood glue was a bit tricky but has kept our stuff glued down. Carpet adhesive was useless as was anything friendly to marine life.
-
2mm or 3mm for decks, please?
-
Im thinking 3mm's
-
There is one in 2.5 I think. You need to watch the density but I can't remember which is the right one. If you get the wrong one it stretches too much and also shrinks.
Our one that lasted forever is the 2.5.
-
Andy, following your link (for medium density material) there are only options for whole mm thicknesses. I've checked the high and low density variants, and it's the same for them.
I'm inclined to go for 3mm on the racks, which get the roughest treatment when the boat sits on them, and try 2mm on the relatively flat deck.
-
Looking at the sheet size I think it is the medium density we used initially - and that was the best. Our current isn't the medium, think it is low and has shrunk a little. 2.5mm is available but only in the multi coloured, no longer in the plain colour. We have 3 mm on our decks. You might get away with 2.
-
OK - material sorted. Now for glue. There are posts on other class forums about spray cntact adhesives, but I can see masking off taking a very long time. So Evostick and a brush? Or any better ideas, please.
-
Jay,
Andy thinks wood glue? - thats what I was going to try too

I have bought 5 sheets of 2.5 (green, blue and purple i think) from Algeos. Have bought 5 Lts of Evostik 538. That's the proper Marine stuff! It is expensive and I guess I have a lot more than I need. I intend to grip later next week. If you want what is left - shout as it will not last more than a month or so after opened...
I have used lots of different stuff before and never found anything as good as the 538!
-
Thanks Ade,
Are you going to any events over the next month? I might like to take you up on that offer. I hadnt sorted out glue yet.

Heres some work in progress pictures. I ended up using evostick impact adhesive, it seemed to do the trick. Used a whole 250ml/or 500ml can (think it was 500).
Still to be tested in anger, and the bubbles seemed to go away once it set.
-
50mm vinyl tape at the edges really helps (especially in this heat if the evo feels the heat)
-
I have re-covered the racks, and then had to stop because of the heat - the glue was drying too quickly.
Evostik 528 - 2.5 litres for £25 at Toolstation.

Jay how has the 2mm on the deck worked out?
-
Bizarrely they don't do all thicknesses in all couloirs!
I have 3mm black on the racks (with a sacrificial extra ring taped on at each end made from offcuts) and 2.5mm blue on the decks - both absolutely fine so far except for one point where I didn't quite glue a blue edge. My fault not the material.
But I think 2.5mm black is one they don't make.
Probably suggest 3mm rather than 2 - or am I just trying to make Usagi heavier....?!
