Title: Any Unfinished hulls ?
Post by: Team Slatter on March 30, 2015, 09:34:14 AM
After a while of doing boring boat sailing I am back ! This time I am looking to see if there are any unfinished hulls lying around the place.i remember there was Thunderbrid 4 at one point and I am looking for something similar that I can still personalize/complete the build and bring into the fleet.

Best Regards

Alex

i have a deamon bottom shell and will have molds that can be used if you want to start from scratch.

I'd highly recommend starting form scratch. There are tooling for:

-Subtle (female + superstructure)
- E5 (Plug, on the isle of white - buying shells of Andy P is a very good idea)
-Marmite (female + superstructure)
-A&E (Male)
-Cool Beans (Female, longitudinal split)
-Poppy (Male, sarcophagus - not available till October)

Now all of these will need some negotiation/deposit/purchase of tooling, but all except subtle are currently empty.
All could be made on a budget and you'd learn the skills needed to finish the boat form doing the shells. Andy P's offering is also amazing and the advice you'd get from him is as good as you'll find on this planet

Lacking experience, equipment and knowledge, where would be best to start ?

I like beans' design tho I recon it is a handful to build? And the mould is expensive.

A+E mould is available with no charge.
Building on a male mould is a lot easier as there is no tendency for the laminate or the foam to bridge the concave curves.
By using the internally chined build method on A+E we remove the need to put any compound curvature into  the core.
It took 2 days to build the hull shell.

I'd say you need no previous knowledge to build a boat.
You do need to accept that failure can be a pre-cursor to success though.

On the proviso that I am well, replying to messages and that all communication goes via the forum - am happy to talk you through doing this and even hand hold via skype. A few visits to Bristol to learn a few basic skills would also be advisable.  The forum bit is key, this way there is a crowd of checking, debate on methods and you are not just waiting for one person to reply.

I'd guess there are a few others on this forum who would be happy to support you in this as well (i.e. others please chip in  :-) )

Obviously if I were to build an Everest design, would I need a vacuum bag and pump?
