Title: what paint??
Post by: chopperado on January 13, 2014, 04:57:28 PM
Can anyone recommend a reasonable priced good quality paint to use on grip hull of 2445 have a compressor so spraying would be a option

Not sure what you are after. International used to do a non slip clear deck paint that used to be brill, When I built windsurfing boards we used to spray it on the grp decks, but it was 30 years ago so it may not be available now, but it was a proper job!

On Sweet Dreamzzz floor, I rollered black non slip concrete paint and that has given service for a season. It wears very quickly but that could be 'cause I only put a 'smidgin' on and cover again when it wears, for looks. I think it is ok. (now waiting for the sniggers as it not really a proper job!)

I have heard using granulated sugar and 2 part car paint can work. Sugar eventually disappears leaving textured paint.

I think that your spell checker changed GRP to grip in your origional post.

We used Drepox. Easy to use and cures rock hard. has not chiped or scratched but is not cheap.
Single coat turns Carbon from black to white.

Marineware

Black, white or grey only.
It is sold as a primer but as they say it can be used as a finish coat.
Could be over coated with clear if required.

Out West we have made some fairly shiny boats using Octoral 2pac car paint. Needs alot of prep to get a good finish....

If you go with Durepox you have to mix 20% HP clear to make it UV stable.

I was about to buy some, but in white.

Sharing the cost makes sense because the smallest volume is 5 litres without the clear coat.

Anyone else considering it?

I was planning to repaint the 14 under the waterline and do the cockpit again.

On the grip, i know not relevant now, i just regripped my other boat with Kiwi grip, so far it seems great.

Have decided to use 2pack acrylic car paint after etch primer. Should do the job

Hi Chopper,

I used to own a glass Jennifer Julian, not many of them left, I guess yours like mine was supplied by Seaflite boats of Harwich - they came (from memory) in dark blue, light blue, red, a bogey green and yellow. Mine was light blue and was cremated around 1980, I have never seen one in the last two colours.

Am I right in thinking you have Epoch II - a dark blue version ? can someone else in the fleet remind me if this was the boat at the Milford Haven Nationals about 7 years ago ?

Either way, could you humour me and take some photos of the condition of the boat and the hull for me before its painted ? It may be that you have one of the last surviving JJ's from Seaflite (again historians may prove me wrong) and it would be good to have a record of its condition before the original colour is lost in time !

Thanks - Graham

after etch primer.
Experiments with the carbon boats suggests that a "filler primer" layer is actually worth using. If spraying it means you can use a lot less of the much heavier top coats to achieve a consitent colour.

From memory 750ml of top 2pac car (mixed volume) easily does an E6.

Still taking off the horrible blue paint it appears that original gelcoat pigment was indeed light blue. Will get some more pics online when completely stripped before repaint.

2445 is listed as EpochII on the boats page.

Clive,

I am just getting to painting my boat.
The cockpit in now bare laminate and the bottom is fairing compound.

In your previous post you mentioned just using a single coat of Durepox, was the a mix with the HP clear to make it UV stable?

Reading the Durepox spec sheet they suggest three coats for bare carbon, but if this could be just 1 or maybe 2 that would save significant weight....

Assuming your sprayed it on as well.
