Title: Nationals 2013 day by day
Post by: roland_trim on August 25, 2013, 07:30:46 PM
Day 1.
Stormingly good Cherub sailing. Currently it is
1) PJ in cool beans
2) Croote in Marmite.
3) The boys in Eleanor

Sure there are some photos of the 25 boats here to follow

Day 2 -
No wind, fleet out for an abandoned drift.
club fantastic but now short of beer and food.

Day 3 - No Wind
Sunbathing and Pico paddling :-(
3 races consitiutes a series, so with tomorrows forcast for another drifter, PJ starting to look cautiously like a champion in waiting.

BBC Weather says clear skies and hot for tomorrow, so maybe some chance of sea breeze?

Day 4.
Dawns bright, sunny and sadly breeseless.
Strong hopes for a thermal before the 3pm cut off.

Scoring works like:l

-no racing PJ wins it
-one or two races and then PJ and Croote are favourites and the winner on the water gets it.
-3 races and we get a discard and clive is back in the  hunt.

There are multiple sets of finger s crossed for the different options.....

3 races with a 90 minute  drift between 1 and 2.

Race 3 started with 5 minutes to spare.

Simpson cup is now in the hands of Jill and Andy Peters.

It is wonderful how open the racing currently is with 1-3 covered by a few points and then 3-6 in another group separated by small margins. Can't wait to get in the mix...maybe next year.

My highlight (apart from Sam's singlehanded sailing in Loco, with kite from the wire) was definitely Babbacombe Corinthian Saling Club delivering pasties to the fleet while we waited for wind...awesome hospitality.

I can't believe you ate all the pasties. I didn't even get offered one. I had to make do with boost fondue squeezed from a soggy wrapper.

I think Roland ate all the pies

We didn't get one either, smells of outside assistance to me. We spent the afternoon humming "Apache".

Hmm we may need to get a whip round for the pasties more to follow...
I may possibly have ordered pasties for the entire fleet when I "swam" to the committee boat for a cup of tea at the start of the postponement ;-)

PS G+E,  thanks for the exploding on contact rotten crab. It worked a treat for H's hangover.

But can you get the Hank Marvin sound?

I pull Eddies hair as a whammy bar, works a treat.

The problem with doing things for the whole fleet, is you have to ensure the whole fleet benefits, lest people get pissed off. I feel better about the crab now ! Still at least it wasn't the incoming and outgoing president that were missed out. DOH !

Executive power is a lonely place... :)

We love you really guys...the pasties just seemed to disappear.

I can confirm we had a pasty and paid the £2 for it on returning to base.  Very nice too and what is even better is it is potato based so Mrs P only had a small bite and yours truly scoffed the rest.

Glad to hear the "most ardent pie fanciers" got the pasties and the lighter crews missed out. Mind you it didn't improve our upwind performance any.

Found some more video of the nationals, note another epic start by marmite...NOT

Despite dropping to fourth on the last day I am glad we got the last two races in, had some great battles with boats around us.

Lovely videos to share between us - but is anyone (publicity?) writing a nationals report for the wider public such as Y&Y?  Or should we have a collective go on here today?

Hayley wrote one last night. Is making the rounds and will be on here and Y&Y soon.

Well done Haley.  Here is a puerile challenge.  See if you can get more profanasaurus references in than the 200 nationals report a few of us put together over a few bottles of wine on a day with no racing.

Cracking competition this year despite the light conditions, great racing throughout the fleet whether vying for a podium or trying to beat someone who always seems to be in front. Glad that we had some racing on day 4 as it was really well contested. Congratulations to Andy and Jill on their first win, let's hope for more breeze next year;)

Missed the pasties! but maybe that helped us in the second race of the day.

After the Lee nationals Y&Y were keen to put the event report in the magazine with some photos.  Since we have lots of great shots to choose from there is every reason to get a report in to for the added publicity that it may bring. Well done Hayley.

next event we should try add help the report writer collect together details on the day while it is fresh making the write up much quicker and easier.

I have done a report of our nationals for Frampton's newsletter. Thanks to Tom i was able to include a couple of his excellent shots.  Just spreading the love which may encourage a few more teenagers into the future fleet.

Ed got some good shots of Shiny briefly upright and twin wiring down wind. It was a good telephoto lens but probably not good enough to catch the expressions of fear on Todd and my faces.
