This event is at my home club.

Thornbury Sailing club is close to the village of Oldbury-on-Severn.

Sailing is on the severn eastuary which boasts clear wind from the prevailing SW however launching is sheltered.
Thornbury is a small but freindly club so we will be made very welcome.  Their small fast handicap fleet are mostly asymmetrics so the courses will suite us.

The club will be providing food at very reasonable prices  and the bar will be open as long as people want beer.

While there is plenty of space to camp for free, people are welcome to come to our house 20 minutes away. Some beds and lots of floor space. Friday nighters are also welcome.

i understand that entry is being pegged at £15 for double handers so an absolute bargin for a weekend event.

Ideal for those who can't afford the petrol to get to Sunderland or don't want to spend so long in the car.

accomodation  on site camping or at my house if the weather's not so good.

Hi Anyone who's driving a long way is welcome to come over on Friday night.  just let us know.

We have some space on the drive for a few boats.  My post code is BS37 5EU for those using Sat nav.

Having sailed at Thornbury a few times now  you may wish to brush up on your tidal tactics.  The club is looking forward to seeing us all.  There are always a few quizically looking people standing around our boat.

Ross,

I can make some calls and find you a crew if you want?  PM me your details and I will put them in touch.  I had no problem finding a willing voluenteer for a crew at Thornbury the other week.  The boat sells it'self.

Hi again.

For those licking their wounds after last weekend you will be glad that the forecast is for gentler winds at Thornbury.

It looks like being a force 2 SW 'erly but this should be increased by the severn eastury's funnel effect.

Directions:  for Sat Nav'ers  the post code of the Anchor Inn in Oldbury on Severn (just past the gate for the club) is BS35 1 QA.

The carpark for the above pub is adjacent to the club gate.  The gate will be open from aprox 9:30-10:00am but Sarah intends to get there in good time so you shouldn't have a problem getting in.

For those using maps
From the North:

Come off the M5 at Junction 14.  head south on the A38 and take the first right Sign posted towards Thornbury.  Just before you reach Thornbury turn right towards Oldbury on severn.  Follow signs towards Oldbury and Cowhill and ignore signs to the power station.

From the south east or west you have the option of joining the A38 at the M4/M5 interchange (J20 on M4 or J15 on the M5) .  from this direction take the 2nd left towards thornbury.  turn right at the roundabout.  At the stangered cross roads go straight on and follow signs to Oldbury and Cowhill.

The is plenty of grass to rig on in front of (South) and to the left (east) of the club house.

The only caution is that the races run on time to get the racing in before the water disappears  so don't leave launching to late.

In an onshore breeze you can recover on to the mud bank to the west of the slip way if the slip way is busy. The mud is hard enough to stand on.

Cool, six boats isn't a bad turnout.

thanks for the offer but i'm not that organised, think i'm going to spend friday night packing everything up.  what times the first race / people planning on getting there?

First race is 12:10 on Saturday.

The gate will be closed but unlocked on Friday afternoon onwards and you can camp down at the club.

If you get there early enough on the Friday the Anchor serves great food and ale.

If you are camping I'd suggest that you drive up over the bank (between the clubhouse and boatshed) turn left onto the bank and follow the track. Marquee should be on the right so pitch your tents on the bank beyond the marquee or on the left of the track.

See you donw there

In the meantime the venerable Queenie SJB had one of her occasional outings, racing on the River Thames at Surbiton... This is not obviously a Cherub venue, but it is the nearest sailng club to where I live, so good to give them an entry... On Saturday the wind peaked at two knots (occasionally), she's not self draining, leaks through the transom flaps, the windward and leeward marks were about quarter of a mile apart, and the current was with the wind... Funnily enough it was sort of enjoyable in a perverse sort of way, but in the conditions getting lapped by a current spec National 12 was unsuprising... On Sunday it was even lighter, and even the Thames Raters couldn't sail!

Hi Jim,

If we do the transportation, do you fancy bringing SJB to the Nats? I'd love to see the wingmast in use!

Result from TSC Regatta

Ok,

So finally managed to get the results to attach to an email, phewww !!!

Anyway having had a chat with Will over the weekend, I have posted the results to help you identify the correct PY number to sail on by using the RYA specimen race method.

930 seemed to work well for "Antidote to Panel Games" but I think the Ellway 5 is a bit of a step change in performance terms.

It is true that Will & Lucy overtook me down a tight reach to beat me on the second race of Saturday, but I was stuck in the displacement / planing transition whereas they wound on 4deg of T-foil and lifted off and left me. Upwind I definately had the edge, I pointed higher and was faster, downwind in lightish breezes I couldnt carry the kite high enough to get up on the plane so it paid to soak in the 700 but for you guys a 12ft boat just wont soak so you had to sail much further but your flatter kites allow you to build up the apparent from higher.

Anyway a great weekend with really close racing, as you will see I only beat Will & Lucy by 5secs in the  final race. It was a pleasure meeting you all and from what I have seen you definately dont deserve the reputation you've got from the Y&Y forum. I hope you all enjoyed the weekend and we look forward to seing you at TSC soon.

Cheers

It just goes to show that you are better off believing the opposite of what you read on the Y+Y forum.

You forgot to mention the Albacore that pasted us both on the water by passinging us on that close reach going at infinty knots or even faster.

Interesting to see in the results that antidote was actually very well balanced racing off 930, the only times that there was a large variance was when there was something to explain it, starts etc. Good job we were there balancing them off with some gentlemens 1500s,  ;D.

While i remember did anyone notice any cameras around at the weekend?  Would be good to get some photos on the site.

You were pasted by an Albacore :o - you sure about how quick you were both going?

Not advisable. She operates on a strict max force3 and no waves rule. As it is I seem to have to deal with a different failed glue joint after every outing... And yes, I even had a repair to do after one day in drifting conditions on the river Thames.

Talking to some of the Rater sailors on Sunday I heard it said (no idea whether its true or not) of one boat that the only remaining component that was actually present in the boatyard when she was built is part of the hog... Everything else has been replaced in one major overhaul or another... I guess that's probably what would be needed to get the old girl into a state where ytou could happily sail in anything, but what would be the point?

And its worse with a ply dinghy because you can't just go along the shell replacing each rib in turn with a new one and maintain the shape and soul of the boat.  And frankly I don't know what you'd keep... I don't reckon I'm skilled enough to be able to remove and replace plywood so all you'd be doing is reducing the boat to a few tatty stringers - and two of those need replacing because they snapped back in '88 and are just held together with carbon sheathing...

But Lucy and you are welcome to run down to Island Barn if you've got a quiet weekend (or even the next two Tuesday evenings) over the next few weeks and have a little nostalgic sail. She's probably going to have a couple more outings before she goes back in the warm and dry...

A big thankyou to Tom who stepped in to crew for me on Sunday.  After spending the whole of Saturday traveling back from the topper worlds in ireland and getting home at 3am it was a call beyond duty.  I really apreciated all the tactics and local knowledge.   :D

Looking at the pics, by the way, I think 2683 needs a *lot* more tension on the lowers...
