Title: Bala Whit Regatta
Post by: Tim Noyce on April 16, 2008, 09:01:50 PM
3 days of pure Bala excitement. Previous years have been windy with wind blowing right down the Lake. That's a potential of 5 miles of downwind blasting!

Kippability is available at Chateau Hopson, or camping locally if you don't fancy the 40 minute drive too and from each day.

Just so you know, if you click on the Calendar tab there are all the dates on there. I only recently discovered the calendar feature but it is pretty useful. It's on the blue tab bar next to 'my messages' and 'members'... NOT the events page on the main site.

Please add more dates for any other events which you wish to make aware to the other cherubbers, but be aware it starts a thread on the calendar events part of the forum.

what kind of times are people looking to get to bala on saturday?

We are hoping to get there around 11am. aturday morning.  We are leaving no earlier than 7am because Sarah is usually knackered by the end of the week.  but should have plenty of time to get there and get ready.

If you can make it with new transport Dave you will have my respect.

I looked at accomodation and the local campsite changes a minimum 3 night stay on bank holiday weekends.  However I think this still presents the best value if we stay locally. I'm not sure if we will get rain or not but i will go along with the majority for accomodation.

***another hoppy post***

For camping try  Ty Isaf Tel: 01678-520574 check out www.tyisafbala.co.uk

Thats where i've always camped in the past only a short walk from the club and where a lot of bala's club members stay at weekends.

I'll look at the weather closer to the weekend the offer of acomadation at home (loads of floor space maybee even a bed if your mega quick) is still there if its wet.

Really bad luck Dave.

At present it looks like we will get rain through Sunday and have 12-14 knots all weekend.

The BBC also appear to now be offering a Cherub-ing forecast ;D

Am knackered already, by the end of Monday I hope we have enough energy to bring Slippy home.

Some photos that i took on the Saturday from Bala.  Got a video i'm going to put on you tube too, just needs a song adding which i think i'm going to use one that Neal suggested on Saturday.  If anyone wants me to send them a higher quality photo just give me a shout, didn't want to take all day uploading them so i resized them to the 800x600 that they are now.

Oops really underestimated the Bank holiday traffic but got the boat rigged in 15 minutes.!

Super photos Matt and love the Deamon blast.  I reckon Tim was just trying to remove some weight from Badgers to get the boat shifting so fast.

many thanks to Paul for stepping in and crewing on Sunday.  I really enjoyed battling the strong conditions with minimal swims.

Thanks to Stu and James for subbing in on Sunday. I really enjoyed maxxing it and swimming like a fish :-)

REPORT FROM BORN SLIPPY - BONKERS BALA
After not enough sleep the week before (something to do with organising the link below) Born Slippy arrived in Wrexham in the early hours of Saturday morning. After a seriously good breakfast from chateaux Hopson we arrived sleepy eyed at Bala wondering if sleep was a better option than sailing.

However Bala had other ideas and served up a big serving blasting fun. Racing quickly descended into a blast fest with some excellent down hill rides. Unfortunately after several swimming lessons caused by twinning into big holes in the wind, a hypothermic crew called an early end to play. Crew also dictated that she was not sailing anymore that weekend without the addition of a few toe loops. So these were added before we went for a curry.

Sunday was even more fun. Both Hopsons made guest appearances on the centre board and Slippy Blasted along, although she decided to fill with water due to a materials error (B&Q bath sealant does not stick to plastic pipe) . Both Hopsons now endorse the wide stance trapezing after falling over backwards during acceleration - so no more comments about my wife trapezing like a w----e.
EDIT - Humph, we finished race 3 with a horn and a lap of race 4 so slowly that the 49er infront was honked but not us - EDIT

In summary an absolute blitz of a weekend. The T-foil stock did not explode, despite multiple static bear-aways and grounding out on the beach. A generally happy, but knackered crew left with big grins. Huge thanks to Hoppy's folks, even Neal adding his carbon footprint to the cream carpet did not appear to phase them.

Now remember that is a '05 rules boat, with a single trapeze. Gav has grafter a laser tiller onto the defunct T-foil stock and is sailing with the blade as a rear spoiler. Believe me this was fast.

Totally agree with that...looked awesome from the bank, they were flying! though, for a lot of the time all i could see was the 8ft of spray coming off the back lol

I'm not really sure where the spray was coming from as it wasn't noticeable on board. My guess is that it was a mini cyclone being whipped up by the t-spoiler! We still had a few more gears to go though... next time!

you know the t-foiler was jsut to chav up the cherub, tims obviously trying to compete with hoppys metro  ;D

stunning pic though, was brilliant to watch

This is only the start of it though. We've tested the spoiler theory with an old t-foil, now we need to start designing the t-spoils for maximum efficiency. Maybe a cossie'esque whale tail, or an XR4i inspired double level spoiler?! who knows where it will go next?!
