Since the demise of Whitstable, theres a hole in our calendar for an early event in May - if anyone has any suggestions where we could fill this hole, usual rules apply, launching, our own starts and prizegiving - it would be a travellers event - post here !
-
I can have a word at Netley, I hope to get down there this weekend. With 2 boats down there we have the beginnings of a fleet!
-
I think you tried Draycote and they couldn't give us our own starts...
Bartley SC is too small, otherwise I'd ask my home club.
How about Swanage? We have done holiday membership there and it's a fantastic bay with access via a private beach. Really friendly club and Gill (and others?) can go diving while we are there. http://www.diversdownswanage.co.uk/ Swanage Pier is safe and a really, really good dive.
I'm happy to make the approaches if people agree, though it might carry more weight from El Presidente

Looks grey and shabby in that photo but it's not

I am organising an event for the 18's over the weekend of 5th, 6th, 7th May on the Solent. Perhaps we could do a joint thing with the Cherubs?
-
Combined 18 event sounds good.
I would like to put in a vote for Draycote though.
-
Combined 18 event does sound good...that is the early May BH...I think I am without a crew but up for it.
-
Torchy,
If it is not at Draycote I doubt I will be able to bring cheese, so would be more than happy to crew/helm for you ;)
Cheers

I am Grampa that weekend...Sam is definitely away.
Gill says she can mostly cope with the grandaughters and what we might do is camp somewhere child-friendly, so they have lots to do and I'll be Grampa in the evenings if I have any energy left.
I'd happily crew for you in Cheese or we could sail Loco (I can trail either).
I suppose we wait for a decision on the event but I guess it makes sense to piggy-back on existing 18 event...and having the 18s there would be fun.
Is the 18 event 3 days?
-
Torchy,
Where are you based?

Before we all get carried away and start booking time, this is only a suggestion list if anyone knew of any events already happenning that we might be able to use .... not a thread for club suggestions. It should ideally be a sea location, not south coast (because 3 of the other travellers events are already south coast) and ideally not be on the bank holiday - in keeping with the Whitstable event that used to be on the calendar.
-
A midlands / slightly more northern event would be nice as there are now four/five boats in the area unless we have a mini midlands event for us northerners!
-
A joint 18 event in the Solent I could get to with a boat.

Slightly nore Northern - do you mean Datchet?
-
Datchet is not even north of Watford :)
How about Rutland? It seems none of us know of events we could piggy back onto tho'......
Rutland SC website says they have an RS Sprint event open to RS 100 to 600 26th 27th May
Would we be swamped (by numbers) in such an event? Would they grant us our own start? A long shot...
Sea venues...Menai?
Another long shot - Coniston? They are running Sunday Club races in May...they might be persuaded to add a Saturday start or we could run Saturday (a blast?) and piggy back onto Sunday. Coniston would be good for Cherubs...I've sailed there a lot (in other classes)...lake runs SW/NE so gets steady wind up the valley when wind is in the prevailing direction - good beat then a run would be easy to set.

Been trawling around North Wales sailing club websites...
Trearddhur Bay only functions July and Aug
There's always Abersoch (South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club)
Royal Anglesey? http://www.royalangleseyyc.org.uk/index.html (they do have dinghy fleets but I couldn't make sense of their events programme)
-
Kielder May Regatta is 5th/6th with Dam to Dam long distance race on Monday 7th, for anybody who fancies a serious road trip. Great club with a long association with the class.
-
Torchy,
Where are you based?
Piers
Birmingham...I think you are fairly close if you sail Cheese at Draycote
-
piers, he is near me

Having done this event it was amazing. Was a long drive when I lived in Derby so even further from Portsmouth now!
-
There seems to be very little going on in May that we could tag onto especially if you take out the Bank Holiday and the South Coast.
There is apparently a Fireball and Merlin event at Brightlingsea on 19/20 May, Mr President...?? ;D
-
Not very northern (even slightly) but there is the Glyn Charles pursuit in late May (20th I think) at HISC, could blast on the other day. We fancy a good shot at the GC if the conditions are suitable (and we don't get lost in the harbour)

Torchy, I don't sail at draycote, Just need to pick cheese up from there! Is there a possibility of sorting things for the next event? (not the isle of sheppey however.)

It seems there are a couple of genuine Possibilities,
1 ) A joint event with the 18's in the solent 5/6 may ( B/ Hol weekend)
2 ) Keilder water windward leeward open 5/6 May + Dam to Dam challenge on the 7th for those brave enough
3 ) Glynne Charles open pusuit race at Hayling Island Sunday 20th May.
I personally like the idea of a joint meeting with the 18's however they are still organising this at present so this could be a non starter. I would also have to seriously consider whether to go to Keilder as not many cherubs often travel that far, and I still have to get up at 02.45 on Monday morning.
The Glynne Charles event sounds a lot of fun if the weather is right so may go to this one ourselves anyway.
However am happy to speak to any clubs for the class if you know of a better suggestion.
-
To Piers,
OK...see what pans out with plans and dates.
Are you generally short of a crew?
-
Simon, as we're trying to find a Travellers event is seems 1 or 2 are the only viable options, of course if a group want to do the GC, or any of the other events mentioned in the thread that's great, just group together and turn up !
-
Did you get my mail Graham?...there may be another option. Closer than Kielder, further north than Watford
-
A couple more for consideration
1) 28/29 April Great North Assymetric Challenge Bassenthwaite (Lake District)
2) 2/4th June Whit open Regatta Bala Sailing Club (North wales)
I will point out that I know these are not in May, before someone else does.
-
Torchy,
Probably best to email me to sort out anything- stop diverting this thread. Occasionally yes, more so now than later in the year.

stop being stroppy piers
-
Bassenthwaite looks interesting...
Anybody else up for this one?
For info - it's inaugural meet was last year and it was dominated by RS boats with 200s and 400s taking almost all the honours
For next year...I am putting a proposal (aka flying a kite) to Graham for a Coniston SC meeting. Anyone interested in more detail [email protected]
-
Any news on the May meet, the Calshot event with the 18's sounds good
-
Loco is still up for the 18 meeting
-
We will know next week if the 18 event is available to host us too; if we are to be invited we really need to get 6 boats minimum. If confirmed the event will be on May 5/6th and is likely to cost around £35 entry
So that I am prepared IF I get the call, please can people indicate here if they will/will not attend, that way I can be properly prepared.
-
Loco needs a crew/helm but is up for it
-
I will be there if its at Calshot.
With boat and crew (who helpfully has a beach hut there :) )
-
Any more takers? couple more days to shout up ....
-
Ronin will be there if it gets sorted
-
Neither Sam nor I are available but I am trying to convince Charlie that she wants to do it. If there is anyone who would like to go but is short of a boat and a crew then I will have a lot stronger argument to get her down there.
-
Short of crew but have boat...plan to be there
-
I can make my sailing services available to the highest bidder.
-
Half a pint of lager and lime?
-
half a pint???? you havent met stu.....
-
;D
You not up for this one John?
-
I was thinking the lime was a bit over the top...
-
You think I could have got away with just the lager...aawww shoot!
-
take it from the ex divorce lawyer: start low and then add the sweeteners..
.
-
:)
Just pointing out to all interested that we don't currently have the 6 boats we need for this one...and there may be a fixed deadline
-
;D
You not up for this one John?
these inconviniences called final exams get in the way
-
You're a bit young for finals, no? Shurely A levels?
-
I think a weekend in Weston would blow the cobs away and leave you refreshed John...all work and no play...
-
final a level exams then! sorry ;)
-
Surely they only start in June!
