What-RVYC Regatta (TT event)
When- 16th and 17th June 2012
Where- Royal victoria Sailing Club IoW
-
This was a riot last year. Team Trim will be putting it in the diary.
After the Nats at Lee the sail across does not really seem that hard (we nearly did it on every lap on the last race).
-
I am keen for this
-
Ronin will be there, via a ferry though
-
I have an exam on the Monday, which means I'm out, unless someone wants a crew for just saturday.
I was really looking forwards to this, great club (and awesome food)
-
Eleanor will be there, looking forward to this one.
-
Just realised I've been chatting about this on another (wrong) thread.
We are hoping to get to this one and happy to be involved with getting multiple Cherubs across, stacking and/or roof topping. Roof topping takes our Espace over the 2m height, so it justs costs a little more.
Sailing club is next door to ferry terminal the other end so a short trip padded and lashed on top of another boat on a trailer seems achievable. I'm sure Loco would swallow an E5, E6 or Banshee (on or off the water) :)
Ferry crossing is about £100 currently for a crossing 9pm on Friday returning 6pm Sunday.
Is it likely to go up if booking closer to the weekend of the event?
-
I'll contact RVSC as last year they had a deal with the ferry company.
-
Can we camp at the sailing club?
-
There is info at www.rvyc.net
A notice of race has been put up, breifing is at 09.00 on saturday 16/06/12, max of three races a day with no warning earlier than 10.00 am.
Prize giving will be held @ 15.00 on Sunday 17/06/12.
I will ask about camping Clive.
-
This site is 1k from RVSC:

-
Some people camped at the club last year.
-
If you can't camp at the Royal Vic, there is a field of sorts on the other side of the spit as you head up the creek towards Wooton... ;) (Last time I visited it looked like being developed but worth a shot)
-
Can we have a list of all those intending to take a Boat/Car combo as the club will try to sort some discounted ferry travel, I will leave this for a couple of days before I get back to them so please post if your going.
They are looking into the issue of camping for us.
As an aside the PRO will be Martin Harrison ( ex Cherub Sailor )
-
I am intending to go, what wheels go with me I havnt a clue. I'm not against the idea of sailing across if we can stuff a car full of drystuff.
-
Ronin is going, we will be going by ferry. I was planning on getting the 7:30pm crossing on Friday night, and the 5:30pm crossing on Sunday. Been quoted £126 inc trailer, on a car / caravan deal.
Happy to take some kit across for the hardy sailors.
-
Not sure about sailing across but I am coming with Atum...Sam is being non committal at the moment so I guess I will find out nearer the time whether I am sailing with a crew or not. It would be great if we can get onto a double stacker to share the cost of the ferry otherwise at 100 quid we might be sailing towing a sailboard covered in dry bags :)
-
Stu has kindly agreed to sail with me in Atum. We will be sailing across on Friday afternoon/evening. It would be great if we can put a bag/box in someone's car. Where are people thinking of sailing across from? Stokes? Lee?
-
Can't wait for this! I think it's going to be the event of year.
-
UPDATE FROM RVYC
Accomodation is available by camping next to the club. Please note the use of this land is by the kind permission of adjacent home owner ("Uncle Bob"), he is currently on holiday but his neice has granted us permission to camp. Team Evo will arrnage a small collection for for a bottle...
Saturday night there is a Regatta buffet. This will be followed by a "Shipwrecked" themed fancy dress video-disco (answers on a postcard). Fancy dress is described as "optional".
-
"Shipwrecked"!?! Well that shouldn't be hard.
-
I am not sure I want to know the answer to this; but what in gods name is a "video-disco" ?
-
I might have mis-heard. But honestly have absolutely no idea. Either way the balcony, a bottle of prot and some shivering timbers calls.
-
Is Tom coming, to rekindle his "old" flame???
-
I may drop in..
-
Mr Kiddle, I think that's a must.
-
I am not sure I want to know the answer to this; but what in gods name is a "video-disco" ?

Nothing like as exciting as it might have been. Sort of does what it says on the tin
-
I'll bring my tight trousers and sparkly shirt then.
-
Reluctantly, looking at the forecast I think we should consider an alternative plan for the weekend or whatever part of it is sailable. As far as I know noone yet has booked a ferry (the expensive bit) so lets have a think and be sensible before we go that far and start implementing logistics.
Windguru is showing up to 30kts for Friday, which I would suggest is unsafe to sail over without cover, and up to 40kts for Saturday, with Sunday looking like a possibility at around 20kts.
I think it would be sensible to think about an alternative plan to sail somewhere else, before we spend on ferries and start travelling around at silly'o clock. Maybe take Subtle and Atums offer of being guests at Hayling, if only for Sunday ?
Lets at least keep an eye on the forecast, make a plan B and be sensible. Thoughts from those planning to go please ....
-
Pretty sure that we will be at Netley on Sunday and can do some signing in if people wanted to join us there. The calendar says that there are 2 races starting at 11, normally one race with a gap long enough to grab some lunch. We will be in Devon for Kates sisters birthday on Saturday and will be driving back straight to the sailing club on Sunday morning if we don't drive back on Saturday evening.
-
I think a plan b is a good idea considering the forecast. Happy to go to hayling as racing in the harbour is generally possible in most wind and tide conditions.
-
I agree...(consider) Hayling or Netley
...and have PM'd Simon Jones about gear left at Sheppey (GB said he could pick it up if necessary)
-
We will be racing at Hayling unless the forecast changes dramatically.
Visitors are welcome at Hayling however in the best HISC tradition it is quite expensive.
£11.25 per boat if signed in by a club member.
Ben and I are members so that should not be a problem.
The club will take a very dim view of the class if people do not pay.
Club sailing on Sunday should be good.
High water is at 11:05. We start the club race at 11:10.
Summer club racing should be out in the bay. It will be in the harbour if conditions are not suitable.
As a class should we be talking to the royal Vic about this.
I feel that this rather answers some of the questions raised by Graham regarding venues.
If the Royal Vic were running the meeting specifically for us and had rostered RO safety crews etc they would not be impressed if we do not turn up, which would rather reduce our chances of a repeat.
Clive.
-
I'll talk to the club later today. I think they'll understand, they are the ones who pointed out how poor the forecast was for the weekend.
R
-
Thanks Roland, maybe we could organise a visit later in the year
-
My suggestion is that we'll make a call Wednesday at 8pm based on Windguru at that time. That way we do our best to honour the RV expectation.
If we decide its not sensible, then whoever would like to can gather at Hayling for a blast/club race there; of course that wont be a travellers event or anything official - we'll think about recouping the travellers event another day.
-
Overall the low is coming through just a smidgen earlier than predicted by BBC Weather Centre earlier this week...if Windguru Solent East shifts its prediction forward Saturday might happen but currently indicates not sailable until 7pm...Sunday looks very sailable.
Does Windguru update at 8pm? Windguru could be wrong...and things will update through the next few days. It all just needs to come through 6 hrs earlier. Tough call GB.
-
Looking at the Met Office, and Windguru, seems to me that nowhere is sailable Saturday, anywhere on Sunday.
Given that, the logistics involved in getting to RV, I think reluctantly, and if noone has any violent objections, we should politely withdraw from this one, and those that want to make a day out at Hayling do so - that wouldnt be a wasted day I dont think.
Comments ?
-
I agree with Graham, can't see any sailing taking place on Saturday anywhere on the South coast.
It's a pity as we were looking forward to RV but it's just not cost effective or worth the hassle for one days sailing. Going to make a trip to Hayling on Sunday as it looks like perfect sailing conditions.
-
We are arranging our weekend around hayling.
I have told helen that I will sail the 200 with her on Saturday. That should stess test it nicely.
Hayling seem to get more 200s out when all racing is cancelled than at any other time.
Conditions loook good for Cherubing on Sunday.
Any one who is planning on coming please let me know so that we can be organised with sign in.
Clive
-
We're in Clive; until such time as someone throws a spanner in and we're out ! what time should we plan to arrive ?
-
Sorry guys, we'll be sitting this one out. I might get some tiles on my bathroom wall. Thanks for the offer of Hayling Clive, looking forward to a visit there some time soon.
-
Very tempted by Hayling but not going to risk it just in case...BBC are still showing winds more than Sam and I are going to be comfortable in at Hayling on Sunday.
Very keen on Royal Vic re-run if possible

-
I am aiming to get there pretty early, around 9:30 ish. The queues onto the island can get pretty bad if you leave it too late and there is a wayfarer and solo open there this weekend. Wind is looking good :)
-
Hi Graham,
It would be good to see you at HISC.
The fast start is at 11:10. It may be out in the bay so you may need to launch before 10:40.
As Ben says it will be quite busy with the SoSlo open. You will be parking well down the causeway.
Allow some time to sign in etc.
We will try and be there quite early as well.
Do you get any help rigging? Alex needs a lot of training in that department.
We tend to rig round the back of the club and launch off the North slipway, as that is where we park the RS200, and there is more sand for the roll over.
Give me a call when you get there.
I hope that you are not going to undo all the hard work we have done trying to get a decent yardstick.

Spoke to Royal Vic.
They understand and the event itself is likely to be restricted if not canned.
Sadly the only date for a reschedule clashes with Weston.
-
It was the right call...forecast windspeeds for East Solent and Hayling have been increased.
-
Thanks Roland - then I propose Weymouth regatta is substituted in the travellers circuit; unless anyone has any objections.

Well it's certainly raining everywhere west of Didcot ::)

Volvo boats are in for a rough night (switch on the 'wind' option 2nd from top right) - 37k average:

So, what is the wind like in the Solent today ?

I have no doubt the chains rattle and the dogs bark

From royal vic site
Club Regatta, 16 and 17 June,
Saturdays racing. with the wind forecast predicted today, PRO Martin Harrison cancelled Saturdays racing.
Sundays racing is planned to take place with lighter winds forecast.
-
All sailing canceled at hisc today.Alex took out the land yacht and clocked 25kts on soft sand.
tomorrow should be better.
-
Hi guys from a very windy Royal Vic.
Sorry you could not get over to sail this weekend but fully understand weather conditions and cost implications.
Martin H canned any chance of racing today early so people did not waste any more of the day.
As for the weather, yes it was VERY gusty and at times 'dodgy' on the pontoon with the risk of being blown away high.
Hoping for some kinder conditions Sunday to get at least a one day regatta.
Thanks for your kind comments about us and hope you get the chance to come over sometime soon.
Keith from the RV.
-
We were all very disappointed Keith and I've no doubt we will want to come over next year

4 Cherubs were at HISC on Sunday where the weather was lovely and there was a fairly fresh force 4 coming from the south west. We all headed out to race out in Hayling Bay for the 11am race but soon realized there was a fairly hefty swell from the previous days gales. Needless to say this made manoeuvres pretty challenging and while tacking and gybing were hard, righting from a capsize was next to impossible. Subtle Knife and Ronin were there at the start with Riot Van caught napping and Atum on her side making sure the sails didn't overheat in the sunny weather. After crossing the line, Riot Van stormed up the beat and after hoisting was in the lead as Atum was doggedly trying the make the first mark. Ronin was having difficulty after a stalled tack was undertaken by Atum who, after a bear away went for the hoist into an oncoming fleet of SoSlos and true to form they went for a swim, hoist number 2 was equally unsuccessful and the decision was made to 2 sail it to the bottom mark. In the mean time Subtle and Riot Van were on their way up the beat again but RV retired after the almighty hulk that is Eddie pulled a kite block off. Atum finally made it to the leeward buoy and fell in again trying to gybe round the mark but was soon up again and heading to windward. The second lap was better for Atum and after a good bear away swiftly hounded on by Subtle (on their 3rd lap) the kite was up and she extended a good lead (or caught up a bit depending on which way you think about it) on the Everests who I think chose not to hoist having done so on the previous lap. At some point in the fray Ronin decided that the combination of chop and swell was ridiculous and headed back for the clubhouse. After completing a second lab the Atumists too thought (well mainly Sam complaining that he was tired) that lunch was in order and that trying to do the second race was not a good plan. Subtle knife got over the line after giving us all another tough conditions master class and headed in too.
After a good lunch we decided to take advantage of the good wind and flat water in the harbour to go for a burn. Anyone who is familiar with Chichester Harbour will know that there are a number of sand banks to avoid but armed with local knowledge, the Atumists charged on down towards Ichenor kite up, control...who needs it? One good gybe and one dodgy gybe later and they were in the water while Ronin and Riot Van screamed past at warp 9 seemingly late for a date with Dell Quay. Subtle Knife soon joined in the fun in the perfect blasting conditions. As the tide turned, and the land heated up a bit, we got a sea breeze backing up the already quite significant force 5. This made for some fantastic sailing but with the extra wind came extra capsizes. Eventually we all got tired (Atumists even went for a rest on East Head) and headed back for the club house and beer. The tide had gone a fair way out by this stage and Riot Van narrowly missed being a victim of one of the sand banks thanks to a hapless Laser 4000 crew standing waist deep checking their centreboard.
In all it was a thoroughly enjoyable days sailing with 4 boats putting on a great show for the cruisers of Chichester Harbour.
I cba to read through this to make sure it makes sense so my apologies if there are any grammatical/spelling/factual errors.
-
Sounds like you all had a great day. Am thoroughly green. Wishing we had taken Slippy out on Saturday as apparently there were breaking rollers at Chew, but Slippy was at Thornbury and so we opted for bathroom tiling instead. Took a look at Chew on Sunday but it was very light and when even the most Chew-hardy soloists are saying it's flukey (360 degree swirls), it's probably time to go home. So we did. Marmite on the other hand was busy destroying our handicap. Stoppit Paul - we're not supposed to be that good in those conditions!!
Did you Haylingists get any photos/video??
-
Yes, videos please
Check out this (it might be quite new - good value HD?): http://uk.oregonscientific.com/cat-Outdoor-sub-Action-Cam-prod-ATC-Mini-Action-Camera.html (http://uk.oregonscientific.com/cat-Outdoor-sub-Action-Cam-prod-ATC-Mini-Action-Camera.html)
A headcam using this might complement a 'fixing a la Roland' (just inside the starboard shroud) to get 2 angles to edit together into an awesome video.
Places are selling them for £99 (we're getting one)
-
We had our GoPro there but ran out of time before racing to attach it to the boat. Head strap ordered for just such an occasion. No photos either. I'm not sure about the other chaps.
-
I am afraid that you had to be there to see how good sun sand and 20ktg of wind can be.
-
An excellent days sailing, havnt been out in swell like that for a long time; Thanks Clive for the invite and for highlighting how much practice we need !
Full respect to Alex, for hauling your sad old ass round the course in that weather !
-
Sounds completely Monsta!
-
The previous day was the 40kt wind day, the race officer started us just to the side of the bar ... I am no wave-ometer, but I am guessing 3m, and not very regular - was quite epic !
-
In the past I've seen some mighty seas coming in over the Chichester bar after a south wester
Sam and I did the right thing and got a really solid sail in at Bartley. Everything is working now on Loco...and we DIDN'T CAPSIZE
