What? A blast (plus the option to join in club racing)
Where? Chew Valley Sailing Club (near Bristol)
When? 18/19 February 2012
OK, so it's sort of Valentines weekend and you know I like a theme :-*.
Hopefully, given the vast quantity of rain that has fallen in the last few days, Chew reservoir will be filling up nicely. Suggestion is for a gentle pre-season warm up, get some pics for the dinghy show, blow away a few cobwebs, etc etc.
Accommodation is on offer at ours (15-20 mins drive from the club) in the form of floor space for most people and there may even be a bed or two to be bagsied, decorating progress permitting. There are plenty of other options including a pub/B&B opposite our house at £25 per head.
So who's coming?
-
Born Slippy, EJ, Sgt Murphy and possibly Suicide Blonde and/or Fubar will be in happy attendance. So if anyone fancies coming along without a boat there'll be something to sail!
This is also going to coincide with the "first BBQ of the season" at ours in the evening for anyone who simply fancies dropping in for a sausage or a beer.
-
Jo and I are keen but we will need to borrow a boat as Madge will be no where near ready.
-
Hi,
I'd love to come if somebody needs crew then I'd be around to do that. Or if somebody would be willing to lend us a boat that would be great too!
Cheers PHS
-
The joy of blasting days are that there will be boats and rides in boats available. Looking at the list above I can see plenty of boat actively seeking crew/helm.
Anyone else reading this please feel welcome to come along, it would help if you post or PM first so we know to look out for you on the shore....
-
Sam's in so Atum will be joining, Can we bag a couple of floor spots?
-
Sounds like fun hope to have Eleanor back soon, so could be up for this.
-
Sarah and I will be there with the Ambulance.
-
Providing I have parent taxi, This Way Up will put in her first appearance in a while.. (Ever?) O.o I would love some floorspace/tent space if its going :)
-
may need to take that back, Im coming back from switzerland by road on the Saturday! Might come along on Sunday ::)
-
Peter and I will be along with Ronin, the way it's working out it could be the first sail of the year. Hayley could you let me have the number for the B&B. Thanks
-
I've cleared the diary so hopefully I'll make it to try out a Cherub. . .
Seeing as Chew Valley is a good 2. 5 hours away (via public transport) can anybody recommend a CHEAP B&B (student. . . )?
Thanks,
PHS
-
Paul, the B&B opposite our house is the Crown. www.thecrowninn-keynsham.co.uk
tel 0117 9862150. Accommodation there is £25 per person. You are welcome at ours for breakfast if you prefer.
Piers, you are welcome to some floor space here and I won't charge you a penny ;D
-
We can't commit at this stage it's soon after Kirklet's planned apperance but I can highly reccomend Chew as a venue to ease youself back into cherub sailing. I or we may make an appearance at some point during the weekend.

-
In a strange turn of events Monkey now appears to be attending. Time to make up on the very little time I have had sailing her.
Adem
-
Great news Adem, look forward to seeing you
-
Team Slippery Will be there posiibly with Supa Crew can i also blag some Floor space for one possibly 2 need to sail getting withdrawls been out once since national in Eggbert but broke my dad so didnt last long!
-
Loads of floor space available for those who have asked for it and plenty more if others want to join in the fun. Happy for people to stay Friday night as well if it makes travel easier.
-
Sam and I (and possibly Charlie) would like floor space on Friday if that alright?
-
No problem Ben.
And btw there's water in Chew. So at least it hasn't been raining here for nothing :)
-
I'm hoping to attend but will have to confirm closer to the time.
-
It's looking increasingly unlikely that Eleanor will be ready for this as she is still residing in the I o W . Then there's just the small matter of refitting her again.
However I may just come along to say hello and maybe grab a sneaky sail if someone wants a not so supercrew.
Piers I will gladly collect and bring the Y foil along if you buy it.
-
You'd be really welcome Si. Shame Eleanor may not be ready, but there's somewhere for you to stay if you want it.
On a happy note, we went for a short (cold) blast around Chew yesterday and the water level is looking good.

Hi,
My name is Nigel and I raced a Cherub a little in the 70s, mainly east coast (Burnham on Crouch). My previous boat was 2345 'Tachyon' - a Forman 6 which Chris Forman raced in the worlds (NZ?) I believe. Sadly, there is no trace of Tachyon.
Have continued sailing but in other classes while the kids were young. Both daughters now grown up.
My youngest is now 15 (Sam) and we have sailed a Topaz Tres for a few years but I think he could handle crewing a 97 rules Cherub now so. . .
. . . thinking of coming to meet people 18/19th Feb (Birmingham based and members of Bartley SC). Sam seems quite keen on sailing - it's the only thing which gets his heart thumping apart from an Xbox.
If he gets keen I'd like to do a few meetings and consider the nationals (just for the fun). . . we always said we'd get a Cherub again before I got too old.

Damn good boat that one. I knew her well when Gary Bellamy had her - before you I suspect. But yes, haven't heard of her in the last 25 years.
-
Nice one Nigel, I was in the same position about 4 years ago with a 10 year old son, I too had cherubs as a youngster, we have never looked back (I'll let you read the reports to see how we have done). Please come down to Chew, we'll fix you u with a sail if you want one, or help you find what you are looking for.
Graham
-
Thanks guys. . . would love to get Sam at least out in a Cherub. My thinking is to bring the Tres, depending on the weather and might enter just to get out on the water.
Tachyon was (is?) a brilliant boat - best (most fun) boat I have ever sailed. Knocked spots off everything from 505 to Enterprise. International Moth was the only other boat which got close. . . and I think that's still the case short of a 49er/Int 14.
2005 rules boats look awesome and might have overcome the relative dip in performance in light weather when compared to the bigger boats. . . or maybe size matters.
-
Nigel, Have PM'd you my contact details.
-
All welcome (have emailed...)
-
Hi Nigel, you are very welcome at Chew and at ours for accommodation/food etc. I think Roland has emailed you, but let me know if you need any other details. Looking forward to meeting you and Sam.
-
Hayley,
Could I blag some floor space on Saturday night? Dean may also be comming along.
-
Hi Hayley,
He's in the 'I just like blasting and hate racing' club - I think that's because the Tres gets left behind by most boats at Bartley. . . well, there's a solution to that :O)
. . . and I think he'll like meeting other Cherub sailors.
-
Hi Nigel, There may be a cure for not wanting to race around at the back of the fleet, however sailing a Cherub will certainly increase the desire to blast. Look forward to seeing you at Chew.
-
He's the right age to get into Cherubs. . . and I might not be too old, we'll see
-
Nigel - you're never too old for cherubs (you just get the crew to do more work!)
Si, you (and Dean) are very welcome at ours on the Saturday.
-
You're probably right Hayley. . . Cherubs were always more about balance and skill, rather than strength and looking at the videos I don't think that has changed.
My current favourite recent additions to Youtube are:
'Cherub kite run'
hxxp: www. youtube. com/watch?v=1J4zqCXhCyo
'Cherub screaming downwind with high-speed pitchpole'
hxxp: www. youtube. com/watch?v=ly8IX9UyqRQ
The latest headcams are producing amazing results and (it's not fair!) it's summer down under
-
Those are both epic...... tremendous. My PhD is at just over 28000 words. <sigh>
-
Did you hear the language? Aussie Cherub sailors are potty mouths. . . unlike the Brits :O)
-
Its a lot worse in our boat !
-
You really need to stop Eddie talking like that :)
-
Are people planning on sailing on the Sunday? I think I may only be able to make the Sunday.
-
Looks like I'm in the same boat. Sunday only
-
No problem to come along only on Sunday.
-
ill be there practising my usual ride scrounging ways dont know which days though
-
Arrangements for Blast - 17-19 Feb.
I'm posting this so I don't have to repeat myself lots. Sorry if it seems a bit regimented. I don't usually get this bossy/organised. Honest.
Friday:
For those of you coming Friday night, there will be food if you want it. Unless you shout now (ie in the next couple of days) it will not be vegetarian or conform to any special requirements, but I'm happy to sort something out if asked nicely - so let me know. There are takeaways on the High Street, but they are not highly recommended.
Parking may be tight, especially if you have a boat with you, but we'll make arrangements with neighbours etc, so before you come down the lane to our house with a boat please give me a call and we'll let you know where to park (see directions below).
Saturday:
Plan is to head to Chew in the morning for some sailing, boat/crew swapping etc.
Back to ours for BBQ later. I have ordered quite a lot of sausages from the (very good) local butcher and we'll supply essentials - charcoal, bread and I suspect some local brew. If you want something other than a sausage, feel free to bring your own stuff to BBQ (butcher open Saturday morning and a 5 minute walk away, likewise a reasonable-sized tesco).
Sunday:
Some more sailing.
Directions:
Our house - 1 Elmhurst Villa, Bristol Road, Keynsham BS31 2BG.
If you have satnav it will probably take you to Trescothick Close which is the road next to ours. Google maps is pretty accurate though http://g.co/maps/anptr. If you end up at Trescothick, you need to turn round, turn right at the mini roundabout and turn immediately right again down the little track. We are the second-to-last house (the first of the semis). Call me if you get lost 07736 390013.
Chew Valley Sailing Club
BS40 8XN
Chew is directly South of Bristol. It is a 15-20 minute drive from our house.

Formalities done - really looking forward to seeing you all.
-
Just wondering before I go and buy train tickets. Is anybody coming near/past/from Reading or Henley-on-Thames and would be willing to give me a lift?
I'm sure I can chip in for fuel if needed.
Cheers
PHS
-
I will be going past Reading .... but early on Friday morning.... any use ?
-
Possibly, Just the issue of finding something to do at Chew for the day.
I will have a think and get back to you.
Cheers
PHS
-
I'd suggest hanging around in Bristol for the day and then getting the train out to Keynsham in the evening?
Keynsham is 6 min by trian or a £3 bus trip form Brisotl or Bath
-
I will be passing Reading but only late on Saturday due to night shift on Friday night. Any good?
-
Hanging around in Bristol could be a good idea- I've got a few mates at uni there so might stop by...
Late saturday doesn't really work for me but thanks for the offer.
-
Sam and I will be going past reading on our way to H&R's on Friday evening after work. Might be quite late by the time we get to Keynsham though as Sam has to come out of the city to meet me after he has finished work. Anyway you are welcome to a lift.
-
Dean and I will just be along on Saturday now but will stay around for the BBQ. What time are you getting to Chew?
-

Hi,
I'm coming down on Friday with graham B, and was wondering whether it might be possible whilst I'm there (so Friday and sat eve) to get some help repairing this T foil from some cherubers- as I have no idea how to fix it.... (or what to fix it with).

Weather looks interesting...definitely a blast earlier on according to BBC with more moderate winds towards evening. Couldn't be better! (except for a band of heavy rain in middle of day...and possible showers later?)
-
Unfortunately not going to be able to make this one. Hopefully will be able to do the next one.
-
I was planning to hop on the train for this but need to sleep, and fell during a ski run yesterday so feeling a bit beaten up too..
Hope you all have a good time; See you all at the next one.

-
What can I say, thanks Roland and Hayley for the accomodation and the organisation. And to everyone that brought boats and travelled, in many cases a long way !
Look what we've done ! We had over 30 bodies in R+H's house on Saturday night, a third of which were new faces, all the talk was of the future and the possibilites, the postive energy was enormous !
Err, and it was a freezing February weekend !
Fantastic everyone thank you, sorry if I over badgered anyone about Pwhelli, but you all pretty much said yes - I will be onto you all to make sure you pull through !
Graham
-
I've put a report up. Sorry if I've missed anything important or got anything wrong - always happy to make changes.
-
Ade, email me on [email protected] as I've got quite a nice (kind of) 'arty' photo of Kokopelli being launched. Can't claim to be a real photographer as it was my lovely wife who took it.
Hayley...I don't think I can upload as yet. Where can I email? Only one is really worth looking at...maybe one or two others.
-
Nigel, email them to me at [email protected] and I'll put them up for you. Thanks very much.
-
The photos I took are at http://www.chameleoni.com/BlastFeb2012.zip (http://www.chameleoni.com/BlastFeb2012.zip) - perhaps someone cleverer than I could put them somewhere more useful.
-
Sorry I couldn't make it, l am up to my neck in boat building with time running out before the show. Sounds like you all had a great time.
-
Graham, your photos are on Facebook too now
-
Have I been fraped ?
