Thanks to Mr Noyce, we can have a blast weekend at Netley Sailing Club on 5/6 November.
Cost is £2 per day per person plus £2.50 per night per person for camping. So basically £13 per boat for 2 days' sailing and camping on the Saturday night.
The galley will be open on Sunday for hot breakfast / lunches.
There's lots of beach for rigging and launching.
There has been mention of Saturday night entertainment (a rum bar perhaps?) and no doubt given the date there will be lots of sparkly things in the sky to look at.
Please confirm interest here
So far interested parties are:
The Badger
Atum Bom
KKT (in long or short mode?)
EJ and/or Born Slippy
Riot Van (tentative/weather dependent etc)
I could make various comments about it promising to be a firecracker of a weekend, seeing the season out with a bang, groan...
-
And Loco!
-
I think Mrs. Trim was referring to Loco with KKT 'short mode'
-
Indeed I was. Can you persuade Katie to join us?
-
It could have been any of a number of Tom's armada! He owns more ships than the Mongolian navy!
-
team cheese may be interested. the duck boat is currently stripped of all ropes, fittings, etc in an effort to get it running well enough to impress tall kiddle next time he sees it.
-
Sounds good, I am interested if anyone wants a crew. :D
-
Unfortunately this is my birthday and I think I am also working so it will be doubtful if I can make it. As Netly and back between milkings might be pushing it a bit
-

No doubt you are referring to the present day Mongolian navy as opposed to the 13th century when it was the largest in the world... Now of course it just has the one boat which doubles as a freight carrier.
Ok I'm sorry, but am on a train and i'm bored.
Andrew, Born Slippy may be on offer if other arrangements haven't been sorted out by then.
-
Sounds good, I am interested if anyone wants a crew. :D
It could be a good opportunity to see how you get on with This Way Up.
-
Loco would be quite a good freight carrier... ;D
Only because she is so practical - not a reflection of her sailing performance obviously
-
dug yourself out of that one nicely Hayley!
Andrew, come down regardless, the beauty of a blast is that people chop and change and as there are no races to get in the way then everyone has a go at sailing everyone elses boats.
We are looking to let some fireworks off the beach so hopefully it will be a clear night. Either way, we will probably find our way down into Hamble for some food and drinks later in the evening.
-
Hayley you really were bored on that train.
-
Simon, if you think that was bored, watch this space. I'm on a 3 hour stopping service from cambridge to birmingham now - I could come up with some really useless information!
-
Well if you will go to seminars/drinking contests and get on the wrong train what do you expect.
-
Ha ha. I wish. Sadly it's very much all work and no play. My birmingham drinking buddy has let me down as well so it's a sober night in a premier inn. :(
-
Thanks, I'll come along with some kit and a tent. :) see you all there.
-
Andrew I take it you mean to the blast, not joining Hayley in Birmingham.
-
Andrew would have been welcome (although very bored today) but best not set off now as i've just left. On yet another train, but at least i'm going home.
Oh, we're on rescue boat at thornbury tomorrow and forecast is peachy. Shame for us, but if anyone else wants a rib plus camera it might be a good opportunity. First race 14.40.
-
Haha. No I meant the blast. (. . . I've actually tried pitching a tent on a train before, Dont ask! :D )
It looks like I may have This Way Up with me too. :)
-
Some additional Fireworks also being provided on Saturday by the country park next door 8)
-
I might be able to Crew, It depends on whether Charlie (my sister) joins us to sail Atum Bomb. I will keep you in the loop.
-
i may just come down with no boat, ill bring some kit incase somebody breaks, willing to take pictures
-
What time are people planning on being there for on Saturday morning? as i will be there with boat (bit of a rubbish paint job on top for just being able to get and try sail SB).
i will need a crew as most likely be just myself, but will have to be leaving early as have got a birthday meal i've got to be at in the evening.
so therefore count me in for saturday!
Most of all, just need to remember how to sail!!
James
-
pending whether i get money for the train, ill be there at 1230ish, ill crew too
-
I think we aim to be down there for 10ish as the boat needs rigging from scratch since taking everything off it for the refurb. The gates to the club are to be kept locked at all times by means of combination locks so I will send round the combination by text/email before the day just to save hassle on the day.
Sounds like we have a good few boats which is excellent.
As Andrew says, there will be fireworks on in the country park next to the club and they will be closing the gates in the evening so we will have to work around that otherwise they may try and charge you extra for getting in! For those staying we should be able to see them from the club though at no extra cost.
The club are also doing a halloween type night in the evening putting on food, drinks and a live band. This costs £5 and is for a 3 course selection of pumpkin soup, chilli with rice/nachos and pumpkin pie for desert. This sounds quite good value but we can of course decide on the day whether we stay there or head up into Hamble for food. (or if it's been windy we may be super hungry and need both!)
-
That sounds like a lot of pumpkin! But cheap... Bumper crop from Netley's allotment owners?
Not 100% sure of our arrival plans yet. Will probably arrive around 11, but outside possibility of R having to work in London on Saturday and dropping me off en route with boat or some other permutation.
-
Charlie, Sam and I will probably be there from about 10-10:30ish.
-
I aim to be there in medium boat mode, a modest 13 footer, John i suppose it might finally be your turn
-
I have had to revise my plan and won't be arriving till Saturday evening. I hope to sail Sunday.

Mr Kiddle the Elder, you had better make sure you are fit for sailing on Sunday - it's about time you made good on those promises to take me out for a splash ;)

oh goody :D
-
Remember remember the 5th of November.
Fireworks, breeze-on and yacht....
Nevermind....
-
So far it's looking like a good breeze tomorrow and a bit more 'interesting' on sunday. Should be fun.
-
Hi Guy's I am looking at buying a Cherub to sail with my son Alex (10).
We live in Southampton, but will be sailing at Hayling.
If we come down to Netly tomorrow is there a chance of getting a test sail in a boat.
Clive Everest.
-
Absolutely Clive - come on down and we'll arrange for you to go for a spin.
Hopefully see you tomorrow.
-
Sounds good Clive. As Hayley says, come down tomorrow or Sunday and I am sure we can get you out in something.
For all coming, my number is 07828 662185 so give me a call and I can give you the gate code to get in if it is not open.
We currently have no rescue cover for Saturday as we will be the only ones at the club, but normal service from the club will be operating on Sunday.
The fireworks in the country park are at 7:30 but they are going to be putting in a one way system as they will be charging people to come in for them... I'll post the email I have received below and it seems that it is out of the clubs hands so we will just have to go with it...
"***On NOV 5th All members wanting to enter the Park between 5-8pm MUST produce their membership card.***
*** NO MEMBERSHIP CARD - PAYMENT ON THE GATE WILL BE REQUIRED.****
Ticket prices are: On the night - Adult £7, Conc £5, family ticket £20 (2 adults, 2 kids)
There will be a one -way system in operation, people will only be able to enter the site between 5 & 8pm.
No-one will be able to leave the site until after this time. "
I believe that if we get into the club before that then we will be able to watch the fireworks for free and then head out for food/drink afterwards. Any questions please give me a buzz and I'll try and help, had a hectic week trying to re-fit out the boat, playing catch up due to a disaster at work and trying to finish a mortgage application which seems to be going on and on.... anyway, see you all tomorrow!
-
Cheers Tim, do you think we could borrow a club rib? (Happy to pay for fuel).
Presumably (if we are too ravenous to wait for curry) we can eat at the club's pumpkin extravaganza between 5 and 8, bring a few beers, watch the fireworks and then head off somewhere else if we want?
-
Afraid I'm not going to be able to make it, combination of loads of things and I dont quite have Tims juggling ability. Enjoy, and look after Clive for me he's an old mate.
-
I am hoping to be able to sort out a rib, but there seems to be a communication block at the moment and unfortunately I haven't spent enough time at the club this year to be able to pull any strings so to speak...
Hayley, yes, I am pretty sure that we will be able to eat at the club and also I have my membership card so I can always get out and get back in again I would have thought if a chip run is required!
-
Oh... also, the quickest way back to the club from Hamble is through the country park which is pretty dark... so suggest bringing a torch with you! :-D
-
Hi Guys,
Thank you all for you warm welcome and hospitality.
A special thanks to Ben, Sam and Dave for letting us try your very special little boats.
I am sure that you will be seeing more of us in the future.
Clive
-
You are very welcome Clive. Really glad you and Alex enjoyed it and look forward to seeing you again soon.
-
Fireworks finished. Now to the pub.
-
Woken up to flat water and a good breeze with some interesting looking gustd. Time to go cherub sailing...
-
Well worth the effort of getting there :) thank-you to everyone that let me borrow their boats at any point aswell, some quality cherubbing took place!!!
Ben-I have tagged you in a photo on Facebook regarding tension systems.
Thank-you all, I'm still grinning
-
What a cracking weekend.
Saturday's fairly benign conditions eased us in gently. A good sail followed by a free firework display and then to the pub for grub and rum.
Today was much fruitier with some seriously pokey gusts that didn't know which way they wanted to go, except it was always at least 45° off where you were expecting. . Still an absolutely fantastic sail.
Netley is brilliant. Great launching, loads of camping space and a decent bacon and egg butty. We will certainly be back. Thanks to Tim and Kate for organising.
Big thanks to Ben, Sam and Charlie for letting us have a little play in Atum. And a super special thank you to Maff for taking me flying in the zuffle. Who needs a t-foil anyway? Davro - that is a very cool boat - thankyou. And thanks to everyone else for your sparkling company. Ahhh. Enough of the love-in now.
:) ;D :) ;D
-
Thanks for organising Tim and Kate. We had an awesome weekend. Thanks everyone for your tips and especially to John for showing me just how fast Atum can really go. I am in the process of uploading the photos and will let you know where they are when they are finished. If you want full res versions I will put them in a dropbox and share it with you.
-
Thanks Ben - will be great to have a look.
I have posted a little taster on the UK-Cherub facebook page - taken from the trusty mobile.

a select few are up.
I will bring a load of dvd's of all of them to the Sticky weekend for those who want.
If anyone is a picture wizz then there are a few sequences of 5 or 6 photos that would look if they were animated.
-
Linky no worky!
-
The link isn't working for me either :(
If you drop me a dvd at the sticky weekend I can animate them at college pretty easily.
-
While we eagerly wait for Ben's pics, just a quiet word on behalf of the Crew's Union. Ratchets (working ones/ones that stay switched on after being kicked/sat on/submerged) for spinnaker sheets are nice. When it's blowing a 5, you could say they are very nice. Yes, when you are having that much fun you do just man-up and hold on, but gybing takes on a whole new appeal.
EJ's were plexused in the 'on' position some time ago after repeated bleating. I can highly recommend it.
My arms are surprisingly un-achy today, but my knuckles are a bit grazed ;D
-
Ratchets are great.! ; Except make sure the sheet end attached to the clew cannot squeze through and jam in there, that makes life quite interesting ::)
Once we were up and going it was brilliant!!!
-
ahhh so you have to press the make it work button
link should be good now

helps if you get the link right
-
Brilliant - Thanks Ben.
Although would just like to point out that that really unflattering position was required to pull the main down the track - perhaps Mr Hamilton will back me up on that one...? (and perhaps someone will re-sew the bolt rope).
-
ill back hayley up there, at one point i was leaning even further than her!!! and yes, the rachets on the sk4 probably saved my hands, not that i can hold a pen yet in lessons :/
-
I've paid a lot of money to get girls to stand like that in the past, If only I'd known a dodgy bolt rope would do the trick !
Seriously good work folks, I've heard nothing but praise for the weekend so my thanks to those that made the effort, may you bask in my shame at not managing to make it.
I can see that photo making the next newsletter; while on that subject, while its fresh in peoples minds please send me snips/experiences/gossip via PM for the next newsletter.
-
I've paid a lot of money to get girls to stand like that in the past,
But presumably not wearing dry suit, 20+ layers of fleece and a trapeze harness?!?
-
Could someone write a few paragraphs about it for the news page, and Ben do you mind using some of the pictures on the website?
-
sure go for it
-
Will post something here tomorrow for people to edit.
-
Here's a starter for people to edit. I'll give it 24 hours and then put it on the news page.
Bonfire Blast 5/6 November 2011
On 5 November most people let off fireworks for fun. Cherub sailors do that too, but this year they also went blasting.
Atum, EJ, Zuffle, Loco, the newly refurbed Badgers and the SK4 (an honorary cherub for the weekend) got together at Netley Sailing Club for a bit of fun.
Saturday was a pleasant, leisurely day with a nice breeze allowing crews to stretch their legs and get in the groove. Team Atum were out early sustained by their strength in the picnic department. Maff took his novice crew for a trip in Zuffle - Edwina had never sailed before but it turned out she was comfortable on the wire and happiest speeding along with the kite up – perfect! Some boat swappage ensued with Tim and Kate in Zuffle, Hayley and Roland enjoying a spin in Atum, Andrew and Will in Loco, and Davro, John and Stu taking turns in the SK4. Visitors Clive Everest and his 10 year old son Alex took the Zuffle and Atum for a test drive. We look forward to seeing more of them in the future, although there may have to be some strategic feeding up of Alex - there's being light and then there's just plain cheating!!
The evening saw some DIY cocktail making and rocket launching, followed by a much more impressive display of fireworks provided by the next door country park (after a friendly chat with security who let us in for free, we decided the view was better from the car park anyway). By this time we were pretty ravenous and the pub in Hamble provided welcome food and a good rum selection.
Sunday showed us what happens when the wind comes from the North at Netley. 2 knot lulls became gusts of 30 knots in a freakishly different direction and back again. Just to keep us on our toes. Once the other side of the channel however the wind was pretty strong but steadier. Andrew and new crew Dan had some fun in Loco. Ben, Sam and Charlie were getting to grips with Atum with some help from John, and finding out just how fast she can go. Zuffle came into her own, flying along with Maff at the helm and first John then Hayley crewing. On taking a look inside Davro’s specialised command centre, both John and Hayley were heard to exclaim "what do you mean I can't take the main sheet? - I have to trust you that much?!" Maff offered to let them hold the jib instead, just to make them feel better. The Badger, with gleaming new paint job and particularly smart new kite sock, got her paws well and truly wet with Tim and Stu on board and Stu quickly found out that the back foot loop has a purpose. Roland took Sam for an EJ tutorial and some screaming downhill action.
Netley is a wonderful cherub venue. Friendly and welcoming, a superb rigging and launching beach, and lots of camping space, not to mention a great stretch of water and a bacon and egg butty good enough to cure most hangovers.
All told, a fantastic weekend of cherubbing. Thanks to Tim and Kate for organising and thanks to the club for having us. We'd love to come back.
-
Great write up! I can't think of any improvements.
I think Man of the Match should go to John for sailing pretty constantly on both days!
Are you aware that only committee members can edit posts?
-
Cheers mate. Agree on John's credentials - and he slept under the stars.
Thanks for the reminder on editing. If people post any additions/changes below, I'll edit later.
-
Sounds like a pretty accurate representation of what happened...
Might be worth noting that the Badger was relaunched after a 14month sabbatical straight into Sotonmet confirmed 24-28knot gusts and she quite literally loved every minute of it.
Thanks again to everyone for coming, more than anything else I selfishly organised the event to spur me along to get the boat finished and maybe a day late but I got there in the end ;-) Thanks for the kind comments about the finish, not sure it rivals Ronins levels of committment but it sure looks better for a bit of a spruce up! (crappy phone pics attached)
I've not had any complaints from the club so think that they appreciated our company! I will be more than happy to organise either another blast or an open next year when the weather warms up a bit so we can make use of the BBQ terrace. With Tom joining the club it could be the start of a mini fleet down here.... come on Atum Boms, you know you want to ;-)
-
Also, there were 37 varieties of rum available at the King and Queen... but we didn't try all of them. The Lambs Spiced seemed to be the favourite on our table.
-
good to see a good turnout this time of year.
Sorry we couldn't make it but Elliot is now a British Spaniard or a Spanish Brit, depending on your point of view.
Thanks to Will for his excelant local knowledge around London, making it possible for us to get to the embassy on time.
-

Was that the mistake I made? - I thought we had to sample each one ;)
Only joking, it was the 2 pints of white russian before we got to the pub that finished me off. The Lambs Spiced was good, but also enjoyed the Mount Gay - memories of Barbados...
-
Ah yes... we drank the bottle of Mount Gay before watching the fireworks. For reference this is an excellent technique as you get to see twice as many fireworks! :-D
-
Elliot is now a British Spaniard or a Spanish Brit, depending on your point of view.
¡Hurra! Lo que un niño listo que es!
-
Sounds like a great time was had by all. Sorry to have missed it.
-
some credit has to go to matt for his excellent self control!!! even if he did get his own back on sunday, despite vigourously denying that he intended for me to go swimming
-
Have put report on latest news. If anyone wants to do anything more interesting or techy with it, feel free. Am going to be submerged in Supreme Court judgment for the rest of the day.
-
Tim, just like to say that Badgers is looking great. PM me if Netley would like to host an open next year.
